Apple Pay Enables Paying With your iPhone

Apple PayOne of the major announcements coming out of Apple’s meeting on Tuesday was another anticipated technology from both retailers and consumers called Apple Pay. This feature will be built into the iPhone 6 coming later this month and the Apple Watch being released early next year.

Apply Pay will build on the Passbook app and will incorporate a near field communication (NFC) antenna allowing consumers to pay at the counter by a simple tap. The iPhone 6 will also incorporate Touch ID to get the fingerprint of the consumer for added security and Apple also included something called the Secure Element, which is a dedicated chip to store encrypted payment information on the device.

In order to help with adoption, which has been difficult with this type of technology in the past, Apple is making it easy to incorporate your credit card into the system by simply importing it from your iTunes account or adding it in by scanning your physical card with the iSight camera.

Apple says Apple Pay will work with American Express, Mastercard, and Visa and already has a number of partners including Macy’s, Walgreens, McDonalds. Disney and Subway. The company also stated the system works with the top bank issuers to handle 83% of the current credit card purchase volume. Apple has also announced the release of a development API for Apple Pay so the technology can be integrated into applications.

Apple is releasing Apple Pay in a software update being released in October and will only be available in the US to start.

Apple Announces the Apple Watch for 2015

Apple WatchApple announced on Tuesday the release of the much anticipated Apple Watch and along with it came just about every feature speculated in the months coming up to is arrival. The new wearable technology comes in three different styles, the standard Watch, the Watch Sport targeting the fitness minded and the Watch Edition with a little more elegant and sophisticated look.

The features include, as you might expect with a digital interface, many face options including stopwatches, stock quotes, weather updates, photos, drawings, the digital time or simulated watch hands to name a few. It will also automatically keep the time adjusted correctly, even when you move through time zones or into daylight savings time.

The Apple Watch integrates with your iPhone and will alert you of incoming messages through distinct sounds, vibrations and something Apple calls a “tap” on your wrist. Users can view and respond to messages, or pick up the message on your iPhone and continue a response from there. It even has a built-in speaker and microphone to take phone calls or dictate messages right to your wrist. Incoming calls can be cancelled simply by covering the phone with your hand.

Incidentally, the Apple Watch does not work completely independently. When released, it will require an associated iPhone 5 or above to utilize most of the functionality.

We don’t have all the features listed here, but others worthy of mention in our book is extensive fitness app that tracks your movement, exercise activity and the frequency of how many times you get up from your seat in a day. There is also a sketch pad to draw and send small drawings, the ability to “tap” someone else on the wrist and it can detect your heartbeat and send it to another. There is a “walkie talkie” app where you can send short voice messages back and forth and it integrates with the new Apple Pay.

Apple is expecting to officially release the Apple Watch in early 2015 with pricing starting near $350.

Withings Home Camera for Health

Withings Home CameraWithings, creator of wireless smart devices centered around health, has an interesting HD camera called Home for use in, well, your home. On the surface the design is a little more appealing then most home automation cameras we find on the market today with a wood grain finish, but it has a few extra features not common in your run-of-the-mill home-monitoring.

For starters, its got a 5 megapixel HD camera that can record video and take still pictures, and connects via WiFi to be viewed through a mobile app. It also has motion and noise sensors and will send a short video of the current happenings to a server in the cloud when these events occur. So, not too far off of the standard yet.

What starts to set the Withings Home apart from other home cameras is that it will automatically create 2 days worth of events in a diary for you to review based off of alerts from noise and motion in its 135 degree viewing angle.

What sets it even further apart is something Withings calls a Volatile Organic Compound (VOC) sensor which checks and alerts for air contaminants. What kind is not immediately clear, however. It also has sensors for temperature and humidity, and will send alerts if either get out of range, bringing us back to the Withing focus on health.

The Home is not available quite yet, but you can sign up to be notified when it is. Or, you can watch for us to notify you since we signed up. They show a price of $219.95 and claim that it will be integrated with the Apple’s HomeKit platform.
