ModiBot 3D-Printed Build Your Own Action Figure: Watch out, Minifigs

We’ve already seen some innovative ways to make action figures via 3D printing. But ModiBot might be the best and most practical 3D printed action figure yet. Instead of letting you design and print an action figure from scratch or order a 3D printed action figure of an existing character, ModiBot meets you halfway. Its a skeletal action figure with swappable parts and accessories.

modibot 3d printed build your own action figure 3

The base ModiBot action figure is a stick figure with lots of slots and holes. The idea is to get a bare ModiBot and then mix and match it with 3D printed parts and accessories. Because all of this is stored in digital files waiting to be printed, it’s practically impossible for them to be sold out. Dynamo Development Labs, the company behind ModiBot, won’t have to deal with unsold stock either; they just have to print on demand. This means that it should be easy to replace any missing or broken parts. If you know how to make a 3D model, you can design the parts and accessories yourself. So you’re going to go from this:

To this:

And that’s just the beginning. Again, it’s not just the accessories that are interchangeable; the skeleton’s parts itself can be swapped. For example, there’s a dinosaur ModiBot skeleton, so you can assemble a half-man, half-dino ModiBot.

Pledge at least $15 (USD) on Kickstarter to get a ModiBot kit. When 3D printers become widely available and 3D modeling software becomes dead simple to use, ModiBot will be immortal. People will be making parts on their own and lots of third-party vendors will sell their own ModiBot-compatible goods.

You know what ModiBot is like? LEGO. If you think about it, LEGO’s minifigs are strangely unlike the rest of its toys: minifigs are barely customizable or interchangeable. ModiBot is more LEGO-like than LEGO’s own action figures. So I wouldn’t be surprised if LEGO imitates or buys out ModiBot in the future. I am also surprised that ModiBot hasn’t teamed up with Rob Schrab yet.

Metal Gear Solid Peace Walker Big Boss Action Figure: Snake in a Box

Revoltech recently released this 25th Anniversary action figure of Naked Snake aka Big Boss from Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker. It comes with a lot of props, but the plainest of its props is also the best one: a cardboard box.

The Snake stealth item of choice is printed with “1987-2012″, which of course indicates the Metal Gear franchise’s first 25 years. Aside from the box, Big Boss has a lot of other toys, including an assault rifle, a handgun, a stun gun as well as “Zzzz” and “!” signs. Big Boss is also highly poseable – even his left eye is moveable – but his face is too cartoony for my taste. At least you can hide him in his box.

You can see lots of silly shots of the action figure on Amiami’s blog. It seems to be already sold out in toy stores, but you can still find a few units sneaking about on eBay. Just be prepared to pay significantly more than its original price.

Warzone Photojournalist Action Figure

war photojournalist action Warzone Photojournalist Action FigureIt takes a real hero to drop into the middle of a warzone armed with nothing but a high end camera, lenses, and a set of brass balls. Toymaster has created the War Journalist: Battlefield Hero action figures to commemorate those who put themselves in danger to present the story. He’s a 1/6 scale figure, which puts him at about 12 inches tall.
war photo lenses Warzone Photojournalist Action FigureThe action figure, which looks a whole lot like Leonardo DiCaprio, has a whole range of interchangeable accessories ranging from his clothes and jewelry to a water bottle to a complete set of lenses in his camera bag. There’s even a little laptop so he can upload his shots back to the studio and check out Facebook in his downtime. Just kidding, a dude this bad-ass doesn’t have any downtime.

He’s even got a CNN press pass to wear around his neck and a cell phone with Bluetooth earpiece (presumably with Anderson Cooper on speed dial). These figures don’t seem to be around much, although a few pop up right here on eBay Warzone Photojournalist Action Figure, as well as the mini toy camera kits being sold separately for any photo enthusiast who likes miniatures. Transformers Metroplex Stands 2-Feet-Tall: It’ll Be Hard to Disguise this Giant Robot

One of the cooler toys to rear its head at the 2013 New York Toy Fair was this gigantic new Transformer, which stands a whopping 24-inches-tall.

transformers metroplex 1

This bad boy is based on the Titan-class Metroplex, and can transform into two different configurations – a giant wheeled battle platform with helipad, and the Scramble City battle station.

transformers metroplex 2

It’s loaded with cool features, including eyes that light up, a projectile launcher, sound and voice effects, and even articulating pupils in its eyes. I also love how his head converts into a turret.

transformers metroplex 2a

Hasbro expects to launch this gigantic Transformer this Fall as part of the 30 year anniversary of the franchise, and it will retail for$125(USD). So kids, start saving your pennies now.

transformers metroplex 3

Funny thing is, while 2-feet-tall is the tallest official Transformers toy released, the actual Metroplex is estimated to be as much as 800-meters-tall (about the same height as the Burj Khalifa in Dubai) – if he actually existed, that is.

Qumarion 3D modeling mannequin coming soon for $750, still won’t play with your kid (video)

Image

Trying to get convincing, natural poses out of 3D models can be tricky, so it's a relief that two Japanese universities' joint ventures, the University of Electro-Communications' ViVienne and the University of Tsukuba's SoftEther, are close to wrapping up work on their posable mannequin. Now called Qumarion, the model formerly known as QUMA uses 32 sensors across 16 body joints to translate the humanoid statue's pose to the computer screen simply by bending limbs, much like you would the legion of action figures you had when you were eight. Neither you nor your kids will be using Qumarion to storm Fort Barbie anytime soon, but the 120 frames per second sample rate over USB does mean that poses are mirrored in your modeling tools almost instantly. You also won't have much longer to wait to buy one for your fledgling anime production: the mannequin and custom modeling software from Celsys should be bundled together sometime within the summer for a comparatively frugal $750.
