The Stairway to Space-saving

stairbookcase_01

The challenge: convert a loft in a private home into a bedroom with a study that includes a large bookcase (on a small budget!). The answer: a hybrid solution that incorporates a staircase and bookcase in a single element. Because the space is small, the openness of the bookcase section allows it to feel airy and larger while providing structural support to the stairs. To make the space feel even larger, a south-facing skylight enables natural light to penetrate into the formerly dark spaces of the ground and first floors at the core of the house.

Leaning Towards Modular

With a very simple construction based on modularity, the Tilta bookcase is composed of 3 different elements that can be combined in variation to create functional shelving without sacrificing style. Units of different heights provide space for an assortment of different sized items. Its seemingly random, tilted supports give it a strong yet unimposing identity that blends easily in contemporary and classic setting alike.

The Bibliochaise Puts a Library under Your Butt

If you like to read and are short on space, this combination bookcase/chair is perfect. You can upgrade your favorite reading spot to hold onto your books too. Maybe you aren’t living in a small space, but just admire the design. That’s okay too.

This bookcase/chair provides a great way to organize your reading collection and also gives you a comfy place to sit and read. In fact, it holds up to 300 books. Removable cushion covers are available in a wide range of colors in cotton, leather, or hide.

It was created by Italian design firm Nobody & Co. called the Bibliochaise and it is made with materials adapted from “high performance yacht technologies,” which I think just means you can only afford one if you own a yacht.

Millennium Falcon Bookcase: Hyper(storage)space

One of the truths about being married is that some days you want to choke your loving spouse. Not kill them mind you, just leave them unconscious on the floor where the dog can chew her hair into a matted mess, not that I have considered that. Not too long ago my wife sold my Star Wars wampa rug without me knowing it, and then spent the money. That’s grounds for divorce in some states.

I’ve been thinking of what she could do to make it up to me and this Millennium Falcon Bookcase on Etsy is the ticket. The Falcon bookcase comes from Whittled in Wood, the same artist that made the AT-AT bookcase that we talked about before. All the little compartments inside the bookcase can hold your books and other Star Wars junk you collect, at least until your spouse sells it off while you’re out of the house.

It’s made from plywood and birch with lots of wood screws and dowel rods. Unfortunately, it’s not cheap at $915(USD), but it is awesome. For that price, you still have to paint it yourself, as it comes in unfinished wood. Plus, there’s the $175 or so in shipping charges on top of that. But I figure that’s more than a reasonable trade for disposing of my $100 wampa rug.

The Growing Bookshelf

The REK Bookcase Junior was designed to grow with your little tot! The 5 part system utilizes a unique S-shape design that makes it easy to shift without disassembly.  Composed of poplar plywood, it’s also lightweight. Each section can be pushed together or pulled apart according to shelving need and spatial requirements. As the child’s book collection grows, so does REK! Get it here!

AT-AT Walker Bookcase: The Empire Strikes Book

There aren’t many more iconic creations from the Star Wars universe than the AT-AT Imperial walkers from The Empire Strikes Back. Sure, they ended up having an Achilles’ heel (or four of them), but I’d like to see you design a walking weapon that can’t be tripped. Fans of the AT-AT will definitely appreciate this piece of furniture – a bookcase made in the form of the Imperial walker.

Diana over at Bit Rebels spotted this awesome AT-AT bookshelf by Whittled in Wood. It’s perfect for holding onto your Star Wars books and collectibles, and while it might designed for a kid’s room, I don’t see any reason why you adults can’t enjoy it too. It’s handmade from birch plywood and other woods, and held together with screws and dowel rods. That sounds pretty sturdy to me, but you still won’t want to let any Rebel snow speeders get near it with tow cables.

The AT-AT bookshelf is available over on Whittled in Wood’s Etsy shop for $565(USD). While you’re over there, you might want to pick up a Millenium Falcon

You Can Buy a Hidden Bookcase off the Shelf

The hidden-room-behind-the-bookshelf thing has become sort of a cliché because of how it’s always being used and featured in cartoons and movies. If you’ve always wanted one in your home but don’t have the time to draw up plans and work on its construction, then here’s some good news for you: you can now buy one.

Hidden Bookcase Door

Sure, you’ll still need to renovate your rooms and move your furniture around, but at least you can just install the bookshelf-slash-door instead of having to build it from scratch.

The bookcase is made from fine cherry wood with a clear shine finish and comes with a high-strength rail system. It measures 88” x 66” and is available at Fancy for $4,150(USD).

Tree Bookcase Grows Books, Not Leaves

Over the past few months, I’ve been trolling eBay for fantastic deals on graphic novels and comic book lots. I’ve bought so many books over the past few months that I’m now in the market for a new bookshelf. If space weren’t an issue, I’d totally go for one of these Tree Bookcases.

Tree BookcaseThis bookcase concept was designed by Roberto Corazza. It’s a sight to behold, isn’t it? It obviously draws inspiration from trees, showcasing their beauty amidst their imperfection. The shelves aren’t straight, so it’s not a very space-maximizing bookcase. The cubbies are also sized oddly, so some of your books might fit while others might not.

Tree Bookcase1

Based on the images, I’d say the Tree Bookcase would only be made possible if it were wall-mounted, because there’s no way that tiny base would make the entire thing stable enough to hold a number of books at the top.

Or maybe it could work, if Robert didn’t mean for it to be stocked up with books in its entirety.
