Cthulhu Piggy Bank Protects Your Gold with Madness
Protecting your change from thieves can be a big challenge. I used to steal all my dad’s quarters growing up to buy gummy bears. If he had one of these Cthulhu piggy banks, I’d still steal his change, but I might pause briefly to think about it.
The creepy 10″ tall bank should hold quite a bit of change. It’s made of vinyl and painted green with black highlights. The coin slot is between its wings, and it has some nasty, razor-sharp claws and beady eyes to scare off would-be coin thieves.
One thing that doesn’t sit well with me in the description is a disclaimer that you might have to place the bank in hot water to flatten the bottom to be able to open the coin door or get it to sit flat. Seems like quality control isn’t a big deal at the Cthulhu bank factory. Get your own at ThinkGeek for $19.99(USD).
Facebank is a Creepy Coin Bank That Eats Your Spare Change
The Face Bank is one of the creepiest coin banks we’ve recently come across. It’s one of those electronic coin banks that don’t accept your deposits passively. You might remember those dog coin banks where an adorable canine hides in a box and reaches out to grab your coin when you put in on the slot.
Well, instead of reaching over or nudging the coin into it, the Face Bank gobbles it up instead. Just put the coin close to its mouth and watch it eat your spare change right up. It probably wasn’t made to look creepy, but it does.
The Face Bank is available for $14.95.

Lincoln’s Portrait Made of Pennies DIY Kit
You can make this lovely historical portrait of our 16th President, Abraham Lincoln, entirely out of pennies with the Abraham Lincoln Penny Portrait Kit. The kit comes with an 18″ x 24″ poster, a 1943 steel penny (copper was needed for the war, so they used steel for one year only) and a fact-filled informational booklet. All you need to do is find a few pennies and glue them on:
And by a “few” pennies, we mean you need 846 pennies (actually more like 845 since it comes with one already). You probably have that many in your couch cushions alone. If not, start saving now. It also comes with a penny collecting guide, which you’ll probably need. But if all the pennies are the same, how will it make a portrait? Simple, there are four different shades of pennies from shiny to “was buried in your yard for a few years”.
If you don’t have the right shades, the guide has some simple experiements to help you clean or discolor your coins to match what you need. If you want to pre-collect, start gathering up 349 shiny new, 112 lightly used, 97 well used, and 288 old as dirt pennies. Once you collect all your pennies it will take about 5-8 hours to complete the project. That’ll keep the kids busy for a while.

Mario Bros. Doorbell: Is the Princess in this Castle?
Joseph Thai hacked together this incredible Mario Doorbell for his apartment. Not only does the doorbell make a coin sound from Mario every time the button is pressed, it also increases the digital counter displayed. Every 10 “coins” collected makes the life-up sound and every 100 makes the mushroom upgrade sound to be played. See and hear it in action here in this demo video:
As Gizmodo points out there is one HUGE fatal flaw in this otherwise awesome doorbell system- the doorbell rings. While normally you want a bell to ring to announce a guest at your door, when the guest has an incentive to press the doorbell over and over and over again, it might get sliiiiiightly annoying inside the house. My dog would go bonkers if someone rang the bell 100 times, just crazy.

Superman 75th Anniversary Coins from the Canadian Mint: It’s a Bird, It’s a Coin!
We have Presidents and other historic figures on our coins, but what we really need are superheros. The Royal Canadian Mint understands this and they are releasing a series of seven different Superman coins to celebrate the 75th anniversary of the Big Blue Boyscout.
They look pretty awesome. Usually I find Canadian coins to be silly looking, but now I want some. Most of the coins range from $30(USD) – $130(USD), but there’s also a $750 gold one if you are a super fan.
Next we need a Batman paper dollar. That would make me happy. In Batman and Superman we trust. That’s currency I can get behind. Hit the link to see the full collection.

Dollar Coin Guitar Pick
This guitar pick is pure money- quite literally. The Dollar Coin Guitar pick is actually made from a $1 Sacagawea coin. Each guitar pick coin is cut and polished down into the teardrop shape needed to strum those strings. The coin looks like gold but it’s actually a manganese brass finish over a copper core. Don’t hate the guitar player, hate the game. I don’t know what that means either.
Seed Money, Your Money Will Really Grow
Here’s a neat little eco-gift called Seed Money. It looks like a small bag of coins but inside each printed paper coin is really something special- seeds. The pennies have flower seeds in them, the nickels have herbs, there are root vegetable seeds in the dimes and the quarters have a salad mix. Just plant the coins and watch your money grow (into plants, not into more money). Make an investment in planet Earth and spread the seeds of happiness. 50 coins to a bag.
