Circular Design 101: A coffee cup made from recycled coffee husks!

The Huskeecup is the coffee equivalent of drinking a coconut cocktail out of a coconut… No, seriously! Each Huskeecup is, in fact, made from recycled coffee husks combined with a binding agent and molded into a reusable cup that’s impact-resistant, non-toxic, dishwasher-friendly, and uniquely pleasing to look at or even smell!

An estimate of 600 billion disposable coffee cups are produced worldwide each year, 99.75% of which are dumped in a landfill or the oceans without being recycled. What the Huskeecup does is solve that problem, while also looking at the humble coffee bean as a raw material. The fine folk at Huskee gather coffee husks discarded in the roasting process, and pulverize them before binding them together with a biopolymer and finally forming them into cups. Designed to be reused, the cups can either be purchased by coffee aficionados to use at home, or by cafés to serve coffee to their patrons. The Huskeecups come in a variety of styles and sizes, including an adorable set of 6oz espresso cups with saucers to match, or 8oz and 12oz travel mugs that come with sipper-lids made from the same coffee-husk material.

Apart from being eco-friendly, sustainable, and reusable, the Huskeecups are really designed to pair well with the coffee-drinking ritual. The cups come with a textured outer surface that’s comfortable to hold, while the material itself keeps your coffee hotter for longer. The cups are also far more durable than ones made from ceramic or glass, and are BPA-free and non-toxic, unlike plastic tumblers or plastic-lined paper glasses. Moreover, old cups that are broken or discarded can be repurposed into new ones, creating a closed-loop that ensures each cup has the potential to be recycled without generating waste, so you can drink your coffee guilt-free!

I Love Spreadsheets Mug Is for Digital Masochists

When I worked in the corporate world, I think my time was equally split between sitting in mindless, unnecessary meetings and staring at massive spreadsheets. While I consider myself to now be an expert at manipulating PivotTables and complex Excel macros, I by no means love spreadsheets. It’s just something I learned in order to get my job done. But I’m sure there are some people out there who see something like:

=INDEX(C3:E9,MATCH(B13,C3:C9,0),MATCH(B14,C3:E3,0))

…they get all warm and fuzzy inside. This coffee mug is for those people.

Simply pour your favorite hot beverage into the I Love Spreadsheets mug and it’ll calculate your undying love for endless grids of data – at least up to 65536 rows and columns. Whether you cut your teeth on Microsoft Excel, Google Sheets, or even good old Lotus 1-2-3, this mug is perfect for you. I’m dating myself, but the first spreadsheet I ever used was VisiCalc on an Apple II. Good times. No AutoSum or Conditional Formatting back then. We did our spreadsheets the old fashioned way!

This mug is the perfect gift formula for the accountant or business person on your shopping list. You can grab one over at Firebox for just $9.99, though according to the calculations on my spreadsheet, you’ll pay a bit more for it if you need it shipped to the U.S. from the U.K., which is where Firebox is based.

A self-filtering mug that takes care of the tea-bag while you sip your tea

We invented the tea bag in 1904. It took us over a century to invent a place to keep it. Meet the Cupio, a teacup for tea-lovers. Its unique design lets you brew tea right in the cup, and then pull the teabag into its special enclosure, squeezing every ounce of that golden goodness out.

The Cupio as an idea isn’t brand new… but it’s the first to be publicly available. It comes with a two-part design featuring a heat-insulated du-ceramic mug and a bamboo-wood handle that’s great to hold and resists any heat. Between the cup and the handle lies the Cupio’s most defining feature… a special design detail that allows you to pull a tea bag into it, effectively squeezing the tea out, while also giving you a place to store the bag as you sip your tea. Given that teabags are often chosen as the more convenient solution, it seems counter-productive that once you’re done with the teabag, finding a place to immediately dispose of it can often be a challenge. Designer Zeynel Abidin Savrun faced the same problem in 2017 and ended up having the teabag drip all over his college-work as he fished the bag out and rapidly tried to get it to the waste-bin. Cupio just conveniently handles that mess for you by not only squeezing your teabag (so it doesn’t drip willy nilly), but also by conveniently holding onto the bag so you can dispose of it once you’ve finished that great cup of tea. Oh, and it works with all sorts of tea bags (and coffee-bags) too!

Oddly shaped teaspoons that are perfect for hanging on the rim of your coffee-cups

These spoons come with a weird hairpin bend for a good reason. If you’ve ever tried stirring sugar into your coffee or tea and then wondered where to put the spoon, never you mind! The spoons can either rest right inside your coffee cup, casually hanging off the rim, or can even rest on a table, with the scoop levitating in the air so you don’t leave a small pool of tea or coffee on your table’s surface. Just good old-fashioned clever thinking! The spoon comes in a set of 5 and can easily be hung off the rim of your crockery instead of being kept in your kitchen cabinets, or worse still, descending right to the bottom of your jar of honey.

Super Mario Bros Pipe Mug Warps Caffeine into Your Plumbing

I have a love-hate relationship with Super Mario Bros. I really like the game, and played it a lot back in the day on my NES. I also died a lot and remain utterly convinced to this day that the game cheated. If you’re a Mario fan, and need a way to get caffeine into your body at warp speed, this is the coffee mug for you.

This Super Mario Bros. pipe mug looks like the green plumbing you would jump into when playing the game to find those secret levels with lots of bonus coins.

I guess if you want to replicate the game experience as much as possible, you could put coins in the bottom of the mug to find after you drink all your coffee, but then again you might choke on those, or poison yourself from the metals. The mug is ceramic and hand wash only, and will set you back $14.99 at ThinkGeek.

Turn any mug into a travel mug

The PortaVia Universal To-Go Lid does something quite marvelous. It retrofits onto the top of any drinking vessel (mugs, cups, glasses, usually have roughly the same diameter at the lip) and instantly turns it into a travel cup that you can carry around with you without splashing your drink. It covers the mouth of the drinking vessel almost entirely, not only creating a nice seal that prevents spills, but it also helps in retaining your drink’s overall temperature, keeping your beverage hot and piping for longer, and if any of this wasn’t good enough, the PortaVia lid even comes with an integrated sipper that lets you use the cup and lid together like a travel mug with a sipper lid.

The PortaVia Universal To-Go Lid is made from food-grade BPA-free silicone. It can withstand hot temperatures, it’s dishwasher-safe, and most importantly, it grips particularly well, creating a robust seal around the edge of your mug. Designed for most mugs between the 12-20 fluid ounces, the PortaVia sits snugly on top, almost like a Tupperware lid, turning a regular cup into a cup you can walk (or even run) around with, without worrying about your drink going cold, or worse, spilling. It also makes sipping your drink on the go easier, and is a much better alternative to disposable plastic lids. Plus, the fact that the PortaVia sits so wonderfully on ceramic and glass mugs also helps reduce your dependency on plastic or paper cups. The PortaVia, with its silicone construction, can be used and reused multiple times across almost all cups, mugs, and tumblers. It’s dishwasher-safe, food-grade, stain and odor-free, and also a boon for the planet!

What if we grew our fruits to be shaped as containers?

gourd_cups_1

I remember one snarky image that made its rounds around the internet. It featured peeled oranges stored in plastic containers, with a caption that read “If only nature could find a way to cover these oranges so we didn’t need to waste so much plastic on them”. It seemed like a glorious act of stupidity, that someone at the supermarket would peel fruits, discarding their natural packaging, and then store them in man-made plastic boxes… so Brooklyn-based design studio Crème did the exact opposite.

Crème chose to reverse the process, forming fruits into containers, rather than the opposite (storing fruits in them). Using the easy-to-grow and tough-when-dry gourd, Crème created specialized 3D-printed molds that allowed the gourd to grow in certain shapes. Gourds are fast-growing plants that bear robust fruit each season. Once dried, the gourds’ strong outer skin and fibrous inner flesh becomes watertight, explaining why they’ve been used for centuries as water-storage and drinking vessels.

Crème has devised a method of mass-growing these gourds, forming them into glasses and carafes, using 3D printed molds that limit the growth of the gourd and give it shape (the Japanese do the same with watermelon, making them cubical and therefore easy to pack). Once the gourd dries out, the mold is opened, the fruit is cut, and its insides cleaned. You’re left with the HyO-Cup… a product that’s watertight, and formed with a surprising amount of accuracy. If the molds are designed well, you can achieve any shape, making stylized containers, or even more functional, stackable designs. Once done, instead of going into a landfill, the HyO-Cups go into a composting pit!
