Donkey Kong in Real Life

Reality and video games merge in this film by MyNameIsBanks called Donkey Kong Classic. This is a short that any video game nerd is going to love. It has great visuals, great music and great acting. But before you think you’ll be watching some happy-go-lucky animated flick, here Mario is a tough as nails real world hero determined to save his girl at the top of the tower.

Mario scales Donkey Kong’s support beams as he races to rescue his captured girlfriend, though it isn’t easy. Once he gets there and thinks he has Kong beat, an even greater threat reveals itself. When will this madness end? And why are they so interested in his girlfriend?

If you ask me, this short is a real masterpiece. It even has a nod to Mario’s Super Mario evolution at the very end. I’d love to see this as a feature-length movie.

Make Your Desk Glow with a Mighty Marquee Desk Light

Mighty Marquee Desk Light 01

Lamps that shed white light onto your office aren’t good for expressing how much of a geek you really are. The Mighty Marquee Desk Light by Dumpsty, on the other hand, can give your workmates a pretty good idea about the things you like.

At 9″W x 3″H x 2″L, the Mighty Marquee Desk Light is big enough to provide you plenty of light exactly when you need it. After all, it relies on 15 LEDs to illuminate the area. Since LEDs can help you save a lot of energy, you won’t even have to worry about the bill. Furthermore, this particular light box doesn’t connect straight to a power outlet. Instead, it relies on a microUSB cable to supply power either from a power bank, laptop, desktop computer, or charger. Overall, it’s an extremely portable device that proves to be very convenient, as you can use it anytime, anywhere.

Probably the best part about this light box is that it comes with three graphic rectangles designed to remind you either of one of the most famous movie franchises in the world, or some of most popular console and arcade games from the ’80s. It should be noted that these rectangles are only applied to one side of the light box, so it’s probably best to place it with its back to a wall. The rectangles are attached using magnets, and can be replaced anytime you want. Since it’s LEDs we’re talking about, any heat emitted by the light box is negligible.

The first rectangle, pictured below, is a reference to the Atari 2600 Star Wars game from 1983, the very definition of a psychedelic trip. Some game, huh? With TIE fighters in one corner and an X-Wing in the other, you have something to represent each side of the Force.

Next, there’s a Donkey Kong graphic that has the mighty gorilla and Princess Peach on one side and Mario trying to evade barrels in the other side, with a noticeable Nintendo badge slapped in-between.

Not at last, there’s a Centipede rectangle that’s supposed to remind people of yet another Atari arcade game. However, this might be too obscure of a reference for all people to get, so it depends on how geeky your coworkers are.

Included in the package are the Marquee Light Box, a microUSB power cable, as well as the Donkey Kong, Star Wars and Centipede graphics. That’s everything you need to turn your desk into a shrine for geeks.

Within the next 8 hours you can gen the Mighty Marquee Desk Light from Walyou Deals for $49.99, a 43% discount from the original price of $89. After these 8 hours pass, you’ll only be able to buy it at the full retail price from somewhere else, so take advantage of this unique chance while you still can. Your desk certainly deserves a lamp to put it in a geeky light!

X-Arcade Lumber Jacques Arcade Machine: Donk-it-Kong

Arcade specialist Xgaming’s latest machine will be familiar to both young and old gamers. The X-Arcade Lumber Jacques’ cabinet design and graphics are based on the 1981 Donkey Kong arcade machine, which was also used as the basis for the Fix It Felix Jr. arcade machine in Wreck-it-Ralph.

Modder Turns Doom into Donkey Kong Country

I never thought I would see these two games together. A modder named DooMero made this version of Donkey Kong Country for GZDoom. That’s right, it basically turns Doom into a Donkey Kong platform game. Let’s just call it Donkey Doom.

Right now it is just a unfinished demo version. You can see a full play-through in action below. It’s pretty cool. If you want to play, you just need a copy of GZDoom, the mod, and a WAD file from one of the official Doom-engine games.

They say that the controls are surprisingly pretty frustrating though. Some might ask why make this? I say, why not?

Donkey Kong Fan-made Board Game: Barrels & Ladders

The Legend of Zelda is getting an officially licensed Monopoly cross over. But if you’d rather play a board game with Donkey Kong and Jumpman, check out Hernando Melo’s reskin of Chutes and Ladders featuring the 1981 arcade game.

Hernando’s Donkey Kong Barrels & Ladders plays just like the original board game. You just roll a six-sided die and move your Jumpman token up the platforms according to your roll. If you land on the base of a ladder, then you go up to the space where the ladder ends. But if you land on a barrel you have to go back down to the space indicated by its arrow. The first player to get to Pauline wins.

Hernando is selling a high resolution PDF template of the board game for just $1.90 (USD) on his Etsy shop. He recommends that you print the playing area on 11″ x 17″ cardstock. Hernando said he’ll consider selling a ready-to-play version of Barrels & Ladders if there’s enough interest for it.

Raspberry Pi-Powered Cupcade Runs Ms. Pacman and Donkey Kong

Cupcade Raspberry-Pi DIY Mini Arcade Game

No matter how cool today’s games are, there’s always going to be someone crying over some games from the ’80s. Fortunately, today’s technology can be used for bringing back such games as Donkey Kong and Ms. Pacman in a unique form.

We’re quickly moving to 4K monitors and extremely fast video cards, and yet some people still sigh over some games that were created three decades ago. There’s no denying that the games from that era, despite appearing very pixelated by today’s standards, had something magic about that could keep kids and grown-ups in equal measure in front of their TV or computer. Cupcade is a Raspberry Pi-powered mini arcade that is capable of running a couple of games from back then, including Ms. Pacman and Donkey Kong.

Adafruit created a mini arcade that’s a bit larger than a keychain. In shape, it really resembles an arcade cabinet, but it actually is a miniature of that. Probably the best part about the Cupcade is that it’s a DIY kit, so whoever is buying it will have the joy of assembling it themselves.

Some games are meant to be played on a horizontal screen, while others look better on a vertical screen. Moreover, the joystick can either be placed in the middle or to the side. Fortunately, either one of these configurations can be made solely with the parts included in the kit.

Besides a Raspberry Pi, the Cupcade also packs a PiTFT 2.8? display, mini thumbstick, and mini arcade push buttons. All these miniature details make it the most adorable arcade cabinet in the world. The Cupcade also features a text-based MAME ROM selector screen capable of working in either H or V mode.

Shutting down the Raspberry Pi does not require a keyboard, in this case. Instead, users have to push the two front buttons for three seconds. Arcade gaming without the bleeps makes absolutely no sense, so the manufacturer included a mono speaker and audio amp. People need to keep in mind that the DIY kit for the Cupcade doesn’t include a Raspberry Pi Model B, so the users will have to spend some additional money on that. Even so, the concept is very appealing, especially to the ones who are still dreaming about games from three decades ago.
