Thumb Twiddling Machine Helps Your Fingers Do the Twiddling

Video and interactive artist Eran Amir created this silly contraption which does one thing and one thing only – it helps you twiddle your thumbs. Clearly, he did this because if you are truly so bored that you are twiddling your thumbs, you probably won’t have the patience to flex your own muscles to make it happen either.

Built from a couple of motors and a simple wood frame, the user places their fat fingers into the thumbrings, switches it on, and the rest is self-explanatory:

We've seen Microsoft's Kinect used in countless ways, but 3Gear Systems means to better these predecessors with the beta release of its SDK, which turns all the subtleties of hand movement into actions. In addition to using two Kinect cameras for accuracy, the software compares hand poses against a pre-rendered database so gesture commands are executed with little lag. It offers complete control of a virtual 3D environment from the comfort of your natural desk position, so you won't have to worry about flail fatigue after long stints. A free public beta is available now until November 30th, at which point bigger companies will require a license, while individuals and small enterprises will continue to get complimentary access. We know what you're thinking -- it's just another Kinect hack -- but we suggest you reserve judgment til you've seen the demo below, showing examples of how the API could be used for CAD, medical, and of course, gaming applications.

Touch Bionics releases new prosthetic fingers, flip the old ones the bird

The only upgrades available for our puny human hands are gaming controller calluses, but if you're sporting an i-LIMB digits hand prosthesis, you can now grab a set of improved fingers. Touch Bionics' "smaller, lighter and more anatomically accurate" appendages are now available worldwide, as well as a new wrist-band unit which houses all the necessary computing power and juice for their function. Best of all, these developments allow more people to adopt the tech than the previous generation, including those with more petite hands or finger amputations closer to the knuckle. We don't know how much it'll cost for a fresh set, but we'll let health agencies and insurance companies deal with that part. With these upgrades and RSL Steeper's latest offering, it won't be long before our flesh-based variants are meager in comparison.

This has to be one of the most bizarre looking piece of clothing we’ve come across. It’s called the Hug Me Jacket and it was designed with a row of clasped hands down the front so you’re always being “hugged”. Designer Si Chan says it will make you feel “warm and hugged”. True that. It will also make you feel like you’re in a straightjacket of fingers and that everyone on the street is looking at you (because they are). If you want the coat be prepared to hand (ha!) over $1200 when it goes on sale this Winter.

If you’re one of those people who is constantly dropping your phone, you might just need something like The Feinger. The Feinger is a two part accessory that lets you keep a tight grip on your device. The first part attaches to your phone by what looks like a suction mount (although their website doesn’t state that specifically, it could be adhesive). The second parts attach via a ball and socket joint and include a lanyard and the unique finger mount (which they call “the sleeve”).

Stick your finger through the neoprene Sleeve (which comes in 3 sizes) and you can carry your phone on the back of your hand, allowing a great deal of mobility with your fingers as well as movement of the phone thanks to the ball joint. The Sleeve looks pretty secure, and if you feel it slipping off you could just bend your fingers to keep it on as you would a loose ring. What’s neat about the Feinger is it’s small size compared to say a wrist or arm band holder and the ability to slip it on or off your finger quickly. I can definitely see this being useful to many people. It costs $10-15 depending up on what combination of parts you order.

Ubi-Camera Lets You Take Pictures With Your Fingertips

Remember the Air Clicker, which was a camera concept where all you needed were your hands and two wearable devices to take pictures? Now are you ready to see it in real life?

Ubi CameraSo the Ubi-Camera wasn’t made from the same people who brought you that concept. It’s not that clean or neat-looking yet either, but it works on the same concept: all you have to do is put the Ubi-Camera on, and form your hands into a frame to take a picture.

The camera is a prototype created by a research group at Japan’s Institute of Advanced Media Arts and Science. It basically contains a range sensor that works in conjunction with a still-in-development software to take pictures simply by framing the scene with your hands.

You’re supposed to move your face close to the camera to take a wide-angle shot, and move away when you want to take a close-up one.
