A Handy Product for Busy Travellers!

ironing_hair_dryer_layout

On short breaks away and over-night business trips, the combination of restricted room in the suitcase and low-cost accommodation can leave you without access to two very important items… a hair dryer and an iron. For business meetings, we all like to have both ourselves and our clothes looking presentable, but with clothes spending hours folded and our hair having no method of drying… this can be a challenge. And that’s where the Ironing Hair Dryer comes in.

It is exactly what its name would suggest! Primarily it’s a conventional hair dryer with an intuitive method of folding to allow it to fit in the suitcase, almost unnoticeably. However, located on the base of the handle is a water reservoir, that utilisers the hot air to allow it to become steam. When the attachment is positioned on the nozzle, the product is transformed into a clothes iron! This is certainly a valuable product for people who like to look good whilst traveling!

A Hairdryer That’s Inspired by Bamboo

bamboo_dryer_layout

In the past here at YD, we have covered designer’s multiple solutions to the ever-frustrating issue that is storing hairdryers! Their bulky shape leads them to being averse to neatly fitting in draws, therefore they are left haphazardly on the side, cluttering the room and interrupting a clean aesthetic. But fear no more, there is now another solution!

Inspired by the naturally-simple form of a Bamboo shoot, the thin, cylindrical body is far different than that found on a conventional hair dryer. A twisting action transforms the cylinder into a form that is instantly distinguishable as a hairdryer. The device is then transformed back into a cylinder when not in use! Its narrow profile makes it a draw-friendly product, while its visually interesting design leads to it being a product that is almost asking to be displayed… what you do with it is up for you to decide!

Blowouts and Beyond!

dryon_00

When I was a kid, my sister was a teenager and our parents would make us share a suitcase any time we would travel. I would get SO angry because she would inevitably pack all her clothes PLUS a hair dryer PLUS a curling iron. There’s was little to no room left for me (and, of course, she was a bully who always got her way). I digress. If only we’d had the DRYON!

This hybrid design marries both functions into one minimalistic and super sleek unit that looks more like a modern art than a bathroom appliance! The curling iron is housed in the center of the square shape and doubles as the power supply for the blowdryer. When you want to curl, simply slide it out to activate the heating mechanism. It’s perfect for traveling (and your angsty teen sister when you go on vacation)!

The Hip-to-be-Square Hair Dryer

hifive_07

Inspired by the world renowned street style brand Off-White, the HIFIVE hair dryer is a fashion-forward take on a common appliance. Users will find the same signature Off-White diagonal line pattern and an overall shape that’s more squarish and technical than traditionally round units.

It’s something entirely new, however, it maintains a cylindrical handle and half-nozzle for familiarity and ergonomics. Unlike other entirely round units, its top section sports a completely flat surface on which it rests. It’s a simple stabilizing solution that should have been adopted by other designs a long time ago to keep dryers from wobbling around! With a folding handle and compact collapsed form, it’s also easy to store or carry in a suitcase.

A hair-dryer has no name

I don’t know who’s been sending out the memo to designers to redesign the hair-dryer, but boy have we seen some incredible concepts in the past year! The Nameless Hair-dryer adds itself to that list with its rather cool folding design that still manages to retain the hair-dryer’s cylindrical shape (something that’s pretty much axiomatic).

The Nameless Hair-dryer is called so because it doesn’t believe in associating to brands, or trying to create a perceived image with a product name. It’s nameless because the way the product looks and performs is brand enough for it. Made out of two simple cylindrical bodies that are connected at one end, the hair-dryer folds down when not in use, and when you want to blow-dry your hair, the handle opens up elegantly to reveal the hair-dryer’s iconic “7” shape. The grill on the back remains slatted, but the front has a rather hypnotic spiral detail on it, in a way indicating importance. What tops everything off is the fact that the hair-dryer is wireless, and comes with a snap-on plug that attaches to the base of the handle, powering the battery to full capacity in under 10 minutes, so you waste no time doing anything else but drying your hair, and probably admiring this work of art that is the Nameless Hair-Dryer!

Blowout and Inhale

lush_dryer_2

This design aims to help you smell as delicious as you’ll look after using it! It’s called the Delicious Dryer and while it’s colored like cotton candy, you shouldn’t try tasting it. You can, however, fill it with a scent cartridge of your choosing! As you blow-dry your hair, it will lightly disperse your favorite scent, leaving you feeling fresh and clean!

A Hammer-inspired dryer for those ‘bangs’!

hammer_dryer_1

While hammers and hair-dryers have virtually nothing in common apart from being hand-held, it’s an interesting exercise to borrow an idea from one and implement it in the other.

Jang Junyoung’s Hammer Dryer gives the hair dryer’s design some volume… not like the kind you’d associate with hair, but literal mass! The handle serves as nothing but a cylindrical gripping area (and the wire passes through it). The Hammer Dryer’s blower unit is given full focus with its heavy looking shape, and even the controls are shifted onto the hammer’s body, giving it functional focus too.

Whether this would result in a significant center-of-gravity shift, or whether it may make the hair-dryer easier or more difficult to use still remains to be discovered, but it sure makes for an interesting aesthetic, and it even allows the hair-dryer to be rested in a rather unique fashion!

This hairdryer goes from 0 to 100 in 4 seconds

mercedes_hairdryer_1

Go ahead and feel captivated by this automobile/hair-appliance blend… only to realize later on that Yu Seo-joung’s Mercedes AMG inspired hair dryer is completely devoid of color. Only through black and white renderings, this hair-dryer manages to capture one’s attention, showing that design detail can still be just as captivating, even in grayscale.

Another brilliant example of product semantics (or the picking up of one brand’s visual language/architecture and superimposing it somewhere else), the AMG hair dryer cleverly picks up AMG’s sporty race-car DNA with a body inspired by the car’s styling. On the back, the air outlet is shaped beautifully like a car’s wheel, with rim-like details as well as the Mercedes logo right at the center. I’m half expecting the hair dryer to go vroom once it switches on!

A Safer Way to Dry your Hands and Hair

hair_dryer

I admit, I can spend a lot of time in the bathroom getting ready for my day and it can end up looking like a war zone afterwards with items spread around and cords all over the place – which definitely can be a shock hazard if not put away nice and neatly. However, storing items like my hair dryer is a pain, simply because there really isn’t a place to store it.

Designer Jaewan Choi feels my pain. Jaewan understands that in order to play it safe in the bathroom, something had to be created. The A’Design Award winning Hair and Hand Dryer is just the perfect solution. The Hair and Hand Dryer work in combination and is stored neatly on the bathroom wall.

The rechargeable, waterproof frame for the magic duo is also super safe, because in order to work, a button has to be pressed thus reducing the risk of shock. When you finish using the hair dryer, you just simply place it back on the holder to be recharged. A perfect pair that will fit any modern bathroom design.
