TORRAS UPRO Ostand Super Shockproof Shield Mate: Protection and Innovation in Tandem

The iPhone 15 series just went live with beautiful new colors and new materials, which will make you want to make sure they’re well protected even more. Phone cases are a dime a dozen, especially for iPhones, but few are able to do their job while still preserving the elegance of the iPhone’s innate design. Even fewer are able to offer value beyond just protection, making them a single-trick pony at best.

The TORRAS UPRO Ostand SS ShieldMate, short for “Super Shockproof,” definitely stands apart from the crowd, pun totally intended. The protective case was meticulously designed to let the iPhone’s design shine through its clear surface while still offering unparalleled protection when, not if, accidents happen, especially when dropping the phone from any height or angle. The high-durability TPU material alone already absorbs 98% of the shock, but it has another trick up its sleeve to add even more protection to the phone and confidence to users.

iPhone 15 Pro Max

Inspired by the air cushion found in many shoes, the TORRAS UPRO Ostand SS ShieldMate utilizes air-filled bumpers around the edges of the case to bounce back external forces from drops and bumps. SGS-certified for 12-foot drop tests, the case is unmatched in offering protection for your precious new iPhone 15. And that’s without making the phone look like a tank heading out for war, maintaining the iPhone 15’s slim profile, and letting its true colors catch the eye of any beholder.

But wait, there’s more! The Ostand line of cases takes its name from the innovative O-shaped ring, a versatile kickstand that offers three functions in one design. The built-in kickstand lets you prop up the iPhone 15 on any flat surface, whether vertically or horizontally, to make short work of video calls and video binges. The MagSafe-compatible ring also lets you wirelessly charge the phone without having to take off the UPRO case, attach MagSafe accessories, or stick the phone to car chargers or even refrigerator doors. Finally, that O-ring lets you hold the phone securely with one hand, similar to other ring attachments but without the awkward bulk that gets in your way.

TORRAS UPRO Ostand R: 360-degree Versatility

If the compact UPRO Ostand SS still feels a bit too much, TORRAS has another option that doesn’t skimp on protection while still offering impressive flexibility of functions. The TORRAS UPRO Ostand R, now available for the iPhone 15 Pro line, brings an extra slim protective case that still boasts SGS and RoHS certifications for drops from a height of 12ft. That’s thanks to the ShockMAT technology that brings full-body protection not just against drops but also against scratches. All these while keeping the phone in your pocket as close to the original thin profile of the iPhone 15 Pro.

Its defining feature, however, is its innovative magnetic ring that functions as a kickstand and holder, similar to the new UPRO Ostand SS. What makes it different, however, is its ability to rotate 360 to any position you want, allowing it to be more flexible and more versatile in the positioning of the phone. The kickstand itself can be set to almost any angle, providing limitless ways to prop up the iPhone 15 Pro for content consumption or creation.

That O-ring uses powerful neodymium magnets so attaching to compatible surfaces is lightning fast. Of course, it’s compatible with MagSafe technology, so chargers and accessories are fully supported without having to take off the case and expose your iPhone to harm. Whether you’re taking an unplanned business call outdoors, shooting your latest social media clip, or simply lounging in bed to watch your favorite TV series, the TORRAS UPRO Ostand SS and Ostand R bring unmatched protection and versatility that levels up your iPhone 15 game.

The USB-C iPhone 15 is a Step for Apple and a Big Leap for Tech-kind. Here’s why…

With the company transitioning to USB-C, committing to bold environmental goals, and even finally embracing Right to Repair, this is officially a new era for Apple and I’m absolutely loving it… but first, let’s just acknowledge the star of this year’s keynote – the Apple iPhone 15.

Each Apple Keynote is a combination of two things – some recurring moments that give us a sense of familiarity, like Tim Cook saying “Good Morning!” or watching a montage of people who’ve had life-saving experiences with Apple products… and some moments that are starkly different, reminding us of everything Apple did new this year, like the short film with Octavia Spencer as Mother Nature, and Apple’s wholehearted pivot to USB-C, tinted glass, and a titanium chassis for the 15 Pro. This year saw a hearty blend of both kinds of moments, and just like every year, this year’s iPhone 15 and 15 Pro series holds a lot of promise.

Designer: Apple

The iPhone 15 has a new 48MP main camera (upgrading from last year’s 24MP shooter), a screen with 2000 nits of peak brightness, the iconic Dynamic Island, a next-gen Ultra Wide Band chip that also helps you find friends (instead of just your Apple products), an Action Button instead of the mute slider, and Roadside Assistance via satellite… all powered by the powerful A16 Bionic Chip. The iPhone 15 now also sports a tinted glass back that’s colored on a molecular level for a distinctly pastel appeal, and a USB-C port at the bottom, marking the official death of the Lightning Port.

The iPhone 15 Pro on the other hand now boasts of a stunning Grade 5 titanium design that’s stronger yet lighter than steel. The USB-C port runs the USB3 protocol that’s powered by a dedicated section of the A17 Pro Bionic chip, enabling rapid transfer of data across devices and onto external storage. The 15 Pro also has the Dynamic Island, understandably, and the Action Button over the Mute Slider. The built-in A17 Bionic Chip is measurably more powerful and efficient than its predecessor, now with new hardware ray-tracing features that make games MUCH better on the 15 Pro. Given its Pro status, the phone comes with even better cameras than last year, featuring a Macro mode, super high-resolution photos (now with the ability to change your resolution natively within the camera app, and a stunning 5x Telephoto Optical Zoom on the Pro Max, thanks to a new ‘textured prism’ design that bounces light multiple times before it hits the sensor. A combination of two lenses on the 15 Pro also allows you to shoot Spatial Videos, making the new Pro iPhone the ONLY device capable of creating 3D content for the Vision Pro.

The undertone of this entire event, however, was about all the changes that Apple’s making to its products and operations. The USB-C is just a small part of it, but even if you look at the invite, the Apple Logo is made from titanium particles, hinting at a shift in material. Along with the USB-C on the iPhone 15 and 15 Pro series, Apple’s even upgrading the AirPods Pro 2nd Gen to USB-C as well as adding USB-C to the EarPods for people who still believe in wired music. The new protocol now allows you to charge your gadgets through the iPhone by simply connecting them via cable (so you don’t need to unhook your MagSafe wallet to wirelessly charge your AirPods). This effectively leaves simply the AirPods and the AirPods Max as the only personal gadgets with the Lightning Port, although chances are they’ll get refreshed pretty soon too. Apple is finally aboard the USB-C train… but just like we speculated, only the Pro models get Thunderbolt-like features with 10Gb/s data transfer speeds.

The iPhone 15 Pro Max’s Textured Prism Camera Design

In a rather surprising move, Apple’s also overwhelmingly ‘canceled’ leather. In a bid to lower its global impact, the company’s made many drastic steps like recycling materials, reducing plastic within packaging, cutting e-waste, shifting to carbon-neutral operations, opted for sea-based logistics rather than air-cargo, and even planting millions of trees to reforest major parts of the earth. Apple’s latest step is to entirely eliminate leather from their annual line-up of devices and accessories. To replace leather, the company’s introduced FineWoven, a wonderful tightly woven fabric that’s just as luxurious to the touch as suede, while being animal-free. The FineWoven fabric can be found on Apple’s iPhone 15 and 15 Pro cases, as well as their new Watch straps (including even this year’s Hermes straps). The AirTag holder and MagSafe wallet get FineWoven alternatives too.

Apple’s new FineWoven fabric replaces all their leather accessories

The Wonderlust event had one big takeaway – that Apple’s committed to making the best products in the best ways possible. No more fighting governments and unions to defend separate charging ports and standards, no more creating an e-waste pandemic caused by the high demands of their gadgets, no more vociferously opposing Right to Repair legislation, and in the words of Tim Cook, ensuring that “by 2030, all Apple devices will have a net-zero climate impact.” It’s pretty much a new era at Apple, as the company looks at its legacy with equal intensity as its growth. Changing to USB-C is a small step in that direction, but it marks a seismic shift in Apple’s vision of being a company that delights both its users as well as the planet.

The company has ambitious Carbon Neutral goals that it hopes to achieve before 2030.

Top 12 Features on the iPhone 15 we hope to see at Apple’s September Keynote Event

Image: Technizo Concept

We’ve got exactly a week till the new iPhone 15 drops and the rumors circling around it aren’t exactly new. If anything, rumors for upcoming iPhones circulate pretty much the day after its predecessor is announced (I remember people speculating about a USB-C iPhone as early as 2021), so we decided to do something different this time. Rather than ONLY presenting the rumors, here’s a dream wishlist of every feature we’d love to see in the iPhone 15. You’ve got the usual suspects like the USB-C port and the purported death of the slider switch for an action/ultra button… but we’ve also added more dream features in the lineup like a periscope camera and RCS-enabled iMessage, as well as a few absolute long-shot pipe-dream features like a folding display (Hey, a guy can dream, right?!)

Image: Technizo Concept

1. USB-C (With a twist)

It’s all but certain that the 2023 iPhone is getting a USB-C port (given pressure from the EU to standardize ports), but the EU regulation for a USB-C iPhone doesn’t kick in until next year. So while we’re almost surely getting a USB-C iPhone this year, it isn’t quite clear if both the regular and Pro models will get the USB-C port. For years, the iPad Pro had a USB-C port while the regular iPad had a lightning port, so there’s a chance Apple only puts USB-C ports on the iPhone 15 Pro models and not the iPhone 15 models. Conversely, Apple could provide both ranges with the USB-C port, but give the 15 Pro a Thunderbolt port while the 15 just has a USB-C port without Thunderbolt. In all fairness, it’s easier to argue that Thunderbolt is a Pro feature than to make the argument that USB-C ports are a Pro feature over Lightning ports.

2. A17 Bionic Chip

The A17 Bionic Chip may seem like the most obvious upgrade in the iPhone 15, but there’s a fair amount of speculation that the chip shortage is still affecting Apple. Earlier this year, it was reported that the Cupertino giant acquired TSMC’s entire supply of 3nm chips for the iPhone 15 Pro and upcoming MacBook models, but producing 3nm chips can be extremely challenging and there’s a fair chance that the A17 Bionic Chip may just find itself on the Pro model, with the A16 making its way to the iPhone 15 range. Either way, reports indicate that the 3nm chip will offer a 35% power efficiency improvement over 4nm, which was used to make the A16 Bionic chip for the iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max.

3. RIP Mute Switch, Hello Action Button

Following the success of the Action Button on the Apple Watch Ultra, it seems like the company’s adopting a similar strategy with the iPhone too. We all know that Apple eventually wants to make a phone without ports and buttons altogether, and getting rid of the only mechanical moving part seems to be the first step. The Mute Switch, which has been a staple detail since the first iPhone ever released in 2007, seems to be going the way of the headphone jack. Apple was said to have been experimenting with solid-state buttons, but it seems like for now, the iPhone 15 will have physical pressable buttons… but no sliding Mute Switch. The Action Button, instead, will serve multiple purposes, like invoking Siri, triggering shortcuts, snoozing calls, etc.

4. Periscope Camera Lens

Every year, the iPhone’s pro model gets some serious camera upgrades, but judging by last year’s sensor bump, it seems like Apple’s due for some serious changes to the Pro cameras this year. Leaks and dummy models found across the internet show an even larger camera bump than the ones found on the previous models, hinting at a revolutionized camera layout. Speculators say that the new iPhone 15 Pro models could come with a periscope camera system to enable higher optical zoom, with even larger sensors for incredibly realistic bokeh and high detail even in low light conditions. The iPhone 15 Pro Max could even get a telephoto camera with a variable zoom lens, according to TechRadar.

Image: Jonas Daehnert (Phone Designer)

5. Titanium Frame

The titanium design is yet another innovation Apple plans on carrying forward to the iPhone from the Apple Watch Ultra. The iPhone has seen a steady shift in materials, employing Aluminum for the longest time, followed by Stainless Steel for the Pro variants in recent years. However, Apple may be looking to make their latest iPhone even tougher by migrating to the toughest metal known to mankind. Quite like the Watch Ultra’s titanium build, it’s quite likely that the iPhone 15 Pro models may have a titanium chassis, while the iPhone 15 gets upgraded to Stainless Steel.

6. Curved Edge + Thinner Bezels

The fact that the iPhone’s core design hasn’t changed since the 12 also leads to speculation that Apple may be looking to switch things up this year. It’s speculated that Apple might go back to a curved-edge phone like the iPhone X and iPhone 11, while pushing the bezels to be even thinner than previous models for a more seamless-looking display like the one found on the Watch series. Is it a significant upgrade? Probably not. But it does help customers differentiate between older and newer variants, helping Apple push more new models out and giving consumers a bit of an incentive to make the switch.

Image: PhoneArena.com

7. New Color for the iPhone 15 Range

Every year, Apple announces a new color variant for its iPhone series – last year the iPhone 14 was available in Yellow, before that the iPhone 13 was available in Green, and in 2020, the iPhone 12 launched with a gorgeous lilac Purple finish. If there’s one absolutely certain takeaway, Apple will announce a new color this year for the iPhone 15 series, although what the color will be is still undecided. Leaked images of charging cables indicate that the iPhone 15 might come in orange or coral pink, somewhat closely matching their Project RED variant, but still being a little more on the warm pastel side of things.

8. Dynamic Island On All Models

Call it wishful thinking, but it would be great if Apple gave all iPhone 15 models the dynamic island and didn’t just leave it to the Pro variants. Apple immediately upgraded all their phones to the camera notch following the release of the iPhone X, so it would only be fair to do the same with their Dynamic Island too. The iPhone line-up is in desperate need of a design upgrade (it fundamentally hasn’t changed since the iPhone 12), so seeing a dynamic island on the screen (aside from the curved edges and thinner bezels mentioned earlier) would do immense favors for the smartphone’s visual language.

Image: Technizo Concept

9. Better Siri powered by an AI Large Language Model

I don’t usually make such overt software requests but this one definitely deserves a mention. Siri, as it currently exists, is easily the worst voice assistant out there. Even though it was the first, it’s been overwhelmingly taken over by Google, Alexa, and even Cortana. I’d argue that the only voice assistant I care less than Siri about is Bixby, but let’s not get off-topic. It’s high time Siri changed, and got an LLM update. Earlier this year we explored how an enthusiast connected ChatGPT to his smartphone, using it instead of Siri to control his smart home. Many sources mention that Apple’s working on its own LLM too, but has kept it all under wraps for the longest time. Now would be a great time to upgrade Siri with the power of LLMs, making it smarter, more conversational, and much more helpful instead of constantly being apologetic for “not understanding” what users ask of it.

10. Focus on AR and Spatial Computing features

It would be a missed opportunity if Apple didn’t use this keynote to also have a call-back to the Vision Pro which they announced in June. The iPhone’s AR capabilities have always been a highlight at the keynote, with Tim Cook calling upon game studios and animation studios to talk about their latest innovations using Apple’s ARKit. Given that Apple finally has a $3499 horse in the AR race, it would probably make sense to reinforce the iPhone’s AR capabilities. Probably a 3D photo mode in the camera app, or photogrammetry or NeRF features, but we’re probably looking at the iPhone getting some neat Spatial Computing-adjacent capabilities this year.

Image: Technizo Concept

11. RCS-enabled iMessage

We’re officially wading into uncertain uncharted waters here, but wouldn’t it be great if iMessage didn’t suck for Android users? It isn’t inconceivable for Apple to announce software features alongside the new iPhone, so here’s to us just hoping that Apple at least relaxes the tight grip of its walled garden. iMessage is great for iPhone users, but for someone on Android, the experience is nothing short of disastrous. Media is highly pixelated, reactions to messages don’t really appear the way they do for iOS users, and Apple is fully aware of the social discrimination that Android users face as a result. Now sure, it isn’t entirely Apple’s fault that iOS users tend to be snobbish prudes, but hey, would it be too much to ask for a better messaging experience? Google’s been incessantly calling for Apple to adopt the RCS framework to make iMessage great for inter-OS devices, but it doesn’t seem like Tim Cook is listening. Here’s to being hopeful!

12. A Folding iPhone (Yes, we went there…)

Up until 2021, Apple has been advocating for the convenience of small phones with its iPhone Mini series, while also highlighting the appeal of larger displays with the Plus and Pro Max models. Doesn’t it just make sense for Apple to make a folding iPhone that gives consumers the best of both worlds?! Here’s the inside scoop. It’s no secret that Apple is actively working on folding phones. Numerous patents have surfaced, revealing their experimentation with flexible screens, innovative hinges, and a wealth of intellectual property that undoubtedly includes foldable devices. However, Apple is known for its meticulous approach, refusing to release anything until it meets its high standards of perfection, even if it means being outpaced by competitors like Samsung or Huawei. Expecting a folding iPhone this year may be an incredibly long shot, but Apple DID unveil its first AR/VR headset this year… anything can happen!

The post Top 12 Features on the iPhone 15 we hope to see at Apple’s September Keynote Event first appeared on Yanko Design.

New iPhone 15 Pro high-quality renders show the biggest camera bump on an iPhone, plus USB-C

Big changes are coming to the iPhone 15, including what looks like solid-state buttons, a potential titanium frame, and the world’s first Apple-certified USB-C port on an iPhone. Speaking of big changes, that camera bump is probably the thickest I’ve ever seen on an iPhone too. Gone are the days when Apple would try photoshop tricks to conceal the camera bump, and provide the phone’s thickness without the bump just to entice buyers. Given that the camera has now become perhaps the most important component on the iPhone, it’s getting its own real estate in a way that makes the camera really look like a separate entity.

These exclusive renders were made available to 9to5Mac based on what they claim is a credible CAD model from one of the iPhone’s makers. Materials seem speculative at this point, although 9to5Mac claims with a certain degree of surety that we may be looking at a titanium frame for the 15 Pro series (goodbye Bendgate). Other more visible details include the absence of the iconic mute switch over a button that sits flush against the iPhone’s frame, and that sweet, sweet USB-C port.

Designer: 9to5Mac

Inspecting the CAD model has revealed that the camera lens protrusion has more than doubled from the iPhone 14 Pro’s enormous cameras. At this point you could probably snap a MagSafe wallet to the back of your phone and it still wouldn’t protrude as much as the lenses on the 15 Pro’s camera module. The folks at 9to5Mac speculate that the camera will feature an all-new sensor technology that will “capture more light and reduce overexposure or underexposure in certain settings.”

Notably enough, however, the CAD file for the 15 Pro Max actually has a SMALLER camera bump than the 15 Pro. 9to5Mac attributes this to the probability of a new periscope lens system that will only be coming to the higher-end model in the Pro series. I can’t wait to see how Apple justifies this, and what it means for the iPhone 15’s sales. Will people actually spend a couple of hundred bucks more for a sleeker design? My gut definitely thinks so.

The Dynamic Island on the new iPhone 15 series is also rumored to be marginally smaller than the one seen on the 14 Pro from last year. Apple condensed the notch with newer iterations too, so this is no surprise… although rumor also has it that the Dynamic Island will now make its way to all iPhone 15 variants and not just the Pro models.

A deep-dive into the 15 Pro’s camera architecture. You can even see the image stabilizer inside the phone

The biggest change on the iPhone, however, is undoubtedly Apple’s (forced) migration to USB-C. Following EU legislation brought about by the rise in e-waste by Apple not following a set standard, the company is now shifting its iPhone to USB-C, although other Apple products like the AirPods, Magic Mouse, Magic Keyboard, and Magic Trackpad will still retain the Lightning charging connector… for now.

A lot of people are also speculating that this shift to USB-C is going to be met with some form of Apple-style resistance. The iPhone won’t directly be compatible with all USB-C cables, dongles, and accessories. Like with the iPad Pro, only MFi-certified accessories will work as intended with the phone, and even fast-charging cables, adapters, and power bricks will be limited by the phone itself unless they comply with the MFi standards. This effectively means your Android fast charger or GaN fast charger could effectively be rendered useless with the iPhone, which would still charge at the same slow speed.

Although we’re quite a few months away from the iPhone’s release, these renders and rumors help consumers be mentally prepared for what’s to come. After all, a $1200 purchase shouldn’t be a spur-of-the-moment decision, right?

The iPhone 15 is rumored to drop in September, when Apple hosts its iPhone and Apple Watch event. Prior to that, we’re expecting a taste of Apple’s mixed-reality headset (rumored to be called Apple Reality Pro) in June during Apple’s WWDC event.

Modern iPhone 4 concept shows what the iconic Apple smartphone would look like if it were released today

Designed by Nathan Basset who goes by Reddit username G8M8N8, this beautiful handset merges nostalgia and innovation into one delightful package. “iPhone 4 is objectively the best-looking iPhone,” said Nathan, who designed this new-age iPhone based on its 2010 predecessor’s design language. I’m not one to invoke Steve Jobs’ name at every instance, but I do feel like this is the kind of phone he’d be proud to look at. It has the iPhone 4’s design language through and through but builds on its specs and details in a way that makes it futuristic. You’ve still got the classic aluminum frame with glass on the front and the back, but no raised camera bump like the one you’d see on the iPhone 14. The modern iPhone 4 has two large camera lenses that rest against the flat surface, gently protruding outwards. There’s no Home button, or any button for that matter… all you’ve got are flush control surfaces and a mute switch. There’s a Dynamic Island on the front, and what looks like a USB-C on the bottom. If the iPhone 4 was rebuilt again using the rumors of the iPhone 15 as a reference point, this is what we’d get… and I can’t help but think that Jobs would quite like it.

Designer: Nathan Basset

The phone comes in two color variants – Black, and White, just like the iPhone 4. Glass panels cover the front and the back, although, unlike its predecessor, this one isn’t a slave to bezels. The screen on the front pushes its way to the absolute limits, creating an absolutely seamless display with just a hint of a bezel on the sides. In true iPhone 4 fashion, the bezels on the white phone are white too. There’s a small cutout in the bezel on the top to make space for the receiver, which is a little more visible in the white variant.

The two-camera layout is a tribute to the iPhone 4’s lack of a Pro variant. In doing so, this model sticks to the basics too, however with larger camera modules that let more light in to the larger sensors, capturing pictures with much more clarity and vivid detail.

In keeping with the rumors of a button-less iPhone 15, this model ditches buttons too for pressure panels on the side for power and volume control. The only real hardware element is the mute switch, which is rumored to go on the iPhone 15 too, but Nathan decided to retain it for this concept because Jobs would have probably fired entire teams to ensure the mute switch remained untouched.

Flip over to the bottom and you’ve got yet another symbol of ‘Ghost of iPhone future’ – the USB-C charging port. Sitting between two stereo speakers, the USB-C charging port is perhaps the one biggest change to come to the future iPhone. Included in this concept just for good measure, it acts as a symbol of the future, while reminding us of the iPhone 4, which was the last iPhone with the original 30-pin connector. There’s no headphone jack on this concept, sadly. 🙁

iPhone 15 Pro Max renders show thinner camera bump, no physical button design

A new year, a line-up of new iPhones, and a host of rumors before their September release. This is a storyline that plays out like clockwork every year. This year is no different. After the initial rumors suggesting the obvious: Bionic A17 processor, more efficiency, and improved performance. The basic look and feel of the forthcoming iPhone 15 Pro Max (or iPhone 15 Ultra) has been released through enticing CAD renders by Ice Universe, a reliable industry insider.

The sneak peek revealed by Ice Universe on Twitter details some interesting insights about the much-anticipated iPhone 15 variant. The design is not very different from the predecessor at first glance, but a closer examination reveals that the phones with similar Dynamic Island and triple camera settings on the back, with trimmed bezel and slightly thicker form factor.

Designer: Ice Universe

Ice Universe has a good track record of getting information about Apple’s products correct on numerous occasions in the past. This is an important parameter when we consider the claim of iPhone 15 Pro Max featuring a narrower bezel than that on the iPhone 14 Pro Max.

As noted in the Tweet, with its “Titanium alloy middle frame” and slightly curved edges the iPhone 15 Pro Max will measure 159.86 mm × 76.73 mm × 8.25 mm. When the camera bump is included, the total thickness will increase to 11. 84 mm. Generally speaking, this is fractionally close to the predecessor, but going by numbers, there is a nearly 15 percent reduction in the camera bump thickness. These dimensions indicate that the iPhone 15 Pro Max would sit flusher on the table in comparison to the iPhone 14 Pro Max.

Other than this, the leaked renders reveal two very significant design alternations that could make way into the new iPhone major. For instance, the phone shows Type-C charging options (a possibility advocates have long thrown out the window claiming Apple will stick with a lightning port). Other than that, the new iPhone variant could be missing any physical buttons.

This information is propping up in almost every other rumor. Reportedly, the volume and power buttons on this year’s ‌iPhone‌ models may adopt a solid-state design. This is somewhat similar to the home button on the ‌iPhone‌ 7 and iPhone 8, which do not physically move but mimic the feeling of being pressed. Such a change with alteration in the camera module thickness will add aesthetically to the otherwise premium design, but how it actually pans only time will tell.

New iPhone 15 Pro Max Concept shows a redesigned camera layout with variable aperture, and USB-C Thunderbolt

Apple iPhone 15 Pro Max Concept

When I first saw Apple announce the iPhone 14 Pro, I distinctly remember having two thoughts: the first one being “Wow, that Dynamic Island looks fascinating”, followed by “Wait, that’s the only design change? What will they possibly do next??” The 14 Pro seems to mark the longest that Apple has committed to a design style. The camera layout has stayed the same for 3 years; the flat-edge design and lack of a home button have stuck around since 2017, and it’s been 10 whole years since the Lightning Port was introduced on the iPhone. If there ever was a time to make a massive design change… this was it. And I’m not talking about ditching the notch for an island. I’m talking about something more substantial.

Putting together all the rumors available on the interwebz (with a few creative tweaks of his own), concept designer Antonio De Rosa has unveiled what could possibly be the most radical change to the iPhone in the past 5 years. The iPhone 15 Pro Max retains the flat edges (although they look more rounded than before), but has a sizeable change in practically every other area you look at. This incredibly enticing concept features a larger Dynamic Island on the front, rocker-style volume buttons that also slide independently to put your phone on mute, a Thunderbolt 4 port on the base (instead of lightning), and an absolutely unrecognizable back with a new camera layout + branding. If all that awesomeness somehow wasn’t enough for you, there’s even an M1 chip on the inside, marking the first time an iPhone would receive Apple’s M-series chips.

Designer: Antonio De Rosa

Apple iPhone 15 Pro Max Concept

The first thing you notice with the iPhone 15 Pro Max is that honker of a camera bump featuring 2 large cameras instead of 3 smaller ones. The reason primarily being that one of those cameras now comes with a variable aperture, while the other one incorporates the rumored Periscope Lens. The now-rectangular camera bump also includes a better flash, dubbed the Pro Flash Duo, and a dedicated depth mic that can spotlight certain zones and record audio of exactly what’s in the camera’s frame.

Apple iPhone 15 Pro Max Concept

The entire back of the new iPhone 15 Pro Max feels discernibly different too. The camera bump’s new layout affects the entire composition of the back, calling for a newly designed branding system. The 15 Pro, therefore, ditches the centralized Apple logo, opting for the word ‘iPhone’ instead. The Apple logo, however, makes it to the bottom right corner, creating a semblance of balance while almost mimicking a playing card in its design.

Apple iPhone 15 Pro Max Concept

Apple iPhone 15 Pro Max Concept

The biggest change to the iPhone 15 Pro Max is that new camera system. While the 14 Pro didn’t do much apart from introducing a larger sensor and an Action Mode with stabilized video, the 15 Pro goes back to the drawing board with a completely redesigned layout. Now looking almost like something from the Android universe (there’s a distinct OnePlus meets Vivo flavor here), the 15 Pro features a larger camera with a variable aperture, and a camera below it with a periscope lens. The variable aperture camera is a fascinating thing – it was attempted only recently by Samsung, but discontinued almost immediately… however, if anyone could pull it off, it’s probably Apple. The variable aperture works almost like an eye does, increasing in lower light settings to allow the camera to capture more light information as well as generate more natural bokeh, and closing shut in brighter settings for incredibly sharp images with a higher depth of field. The Periscope Lens right under it handles telephoto, using a unique lens setup to mimic a much longer lens to achieve better optical zoom.

Perhaps the most expected change to the iPhone 15 Pro is the death of the lightning port. Thanks to EU legislation, the iPhone 15 Pro’s expected to have USB-C instead, although the company will probably outdo itself by going to Thunderbolt 4 directly. The smartphone will still retain MagSafe and wireless charging, given that Apple probably hopes to migrate to a portless iPhone in the near future.

The concept also brings the M1 chip to the iPhone – a feature that seems like a distant reality but is fun to imagine nevertheless. It does, however, share a few features with its predecessor, including a Dynamic Island (now bigger and better), an improved SOS feature, an Always-On display, and a SIM-free build.

Apple’s expected to introduce the iPhone 15 series as early as September 2023, although there’s no saying what the supply chain shortage will mean for the company’s ability to deliver its next best iPhone on time. Apple’s also rumored to announce a VR/AR wearable towards the end of the year too!

iPhone 15 concept includes a scroll wheel alongside the periscope lens and we’re wondering why

iPhone 14 is the next possible iteration of the Apple iPhone that we’d be expecting this year. The upcoming iPhone is likely to land without a notch and an updated body design. Moreover, Touch ID may make a comeback and the camera bump could be evened out. But even months before the iPhone 14 goes official, we are already hearing rumors about the iPhone 15. In fact, designers have taken cues from these leaks and envisioned their idea for the iPhone to appear in 2023.

As Apple gears up for a fruitful new year, iPhone 13 is blowing sales figures for the Cupertino tech giant. Over 40 million units of the iPhone 13 have sold during the holiday season. These sales numbers are elating for Apple since the company continues to struggle with supply chain issues. iPhone 13 wasn’t a radical shift from the redesigned iPhone 12; for the iPhone15 the designers think there is a possibility of the iPhone going portless and may include a magic wheel controller alongside the cameras.

Whenever a new iPhone is on the horizon, the design world cannot help but believe that Apple would deliver something groundbreaking to shock us. This is a sentiment devised on the previous experiences where Apple has gone against the tide not only to stay afloat but even swim all clear. iPhone 14 concepts are dime a dozen on the internet, and steadily the hypothetical takes on the iPhone 15, like this one with a strange scroll wheel on the side, are keeping us enthralled.

To get a clear picture of what the speculations are and how they could look on the iPhone 15, this design is a fine example, except for the camera bump, which is likely to be done away within the iPhone 14, so there is a little chance it will appear back in the iPhone slated for 2023. Other than that, the concept is pretty much in line with the rumors currently. Two variants of the iPhone 15 appear in 6.1 and 6.7-inch displays touting an impressive 144Hz screen refresh rate. The phones appear portless on the bottom, which has been Apple’s intention; it has been mulling the possibility of offering iPhones without a port in the future.

The iPhone 15 concept depicts a triple camera module that has a slight bump from the body and comprises a telephoto, wide-angle and a twin periscope camera. The design still uses a very familiar iPhone frame with the classic power button and volume rocker on the left side. The most intriguing feature is the scroll wheel on the right side – the specific purpose of which is anyone guess at the moment – but most likely, given its placement, it has something to do with toggling the periscope lens. But is that sort of hardware something Apple will ever want? We are sure it doesn’t!
