Portable Telescope Adds 80X Optical Zoom to Your iPhone 6

Super Spy Ultra High Power Zoom Telescope with Tripod 01

Ever wanted to get into astrophotography, but couldn’t find the perfect smartphone camera for that? Well, that’s maybe because smartphones aren’t really made for that, at least not without an add-on such as this portable telescope.

In the past few years, smartphone cameras have seen a lot of accessories for macro photography and fish-eye lens effects, but no one has ever considered making a telescope that attaches to iPhones for on-the-go telephoto shots. Brando’s Super Spy telescope lens is an iPhone 6 camera accessory that’ll help people take photos at up to 80x optical zoom.

As its name suggests, this lens is not meant entirely for astrophotography, but rather for spying on neighbors, military bases and such. In case it wasn’t obvious enough, the Super Spy telescope lens works out of the box and is a plug-and-play (of sorts) device, being ready to use right after installation.

The Super Spy telescope lens measures 395mm in length when extended, and 88mm in diameter, at its thickest point, but the manufacturer doesn’t disclose the weight of this camera accessory. It can be used without a stand, but I imagine that it is quite hefty and doing so would make your hands tire after a while, so employing the included tripod might be better.

The kit also includes a black case for the iPhone that enables 360-degree shifting, and a velvet pocket, to make sure that the lens is protected from dust. Not sure how it would withstand physical damage, as a velvet pocket couldn’t possibly protect it against that.

All in all, the telescope lens could prove useful for animal observation and traveling, but I can’t possibly imagine anyone using something like this at a concert. The manufacturer, on the other hand, lists this as one of the possible applications of the telescope lens.

This particular model is compatible with the iPhone 6 exclusively, but Brando also makes other models that play nicely with Samsung’s Galaxy line. The telescope lens is available on the Brando’s website for $220, which is quite a steep price for a camera accessory. The manufacturer seems to have taken advantage from this point of view, as the Super Spy telescope lens currently has no competition.

Oaxis inkCase E-ink iPhone 6 Case: Black in Back

A couple of years ago we checked out the Popslate, an iPhone 5 case with an E-ink screen. Turns out it can only display images, which while still cool doesn’t make it that useful. The inkCase for the iPhone 6 on the other hand promises to display a variety of information on its E-ink screen.

inkcase_iphone_6_e_ink_case_by_oaxis_1zoom in

The inkCase has a 4.3″ 480×800 E-ink screen. Like the Popslate, you’ll be able to display an image on it, but as you can see it can show much more than that. Maker Oaxis says it will release a companion app that can push various notifications such as email and weather, alongside other widgets such as a clock, a fitness tracker and stocks.

Best of all, Oaxis promises that you’ll be able to use the E-ink screen to read text, although the company didn’t say how exactly that will work.

The E-ink screen probably won’t have a touch-sensitive layer, but the case will have both a touch-sensitive and a mechanical button, presumably to switch its functions and toggle the screen on and off. The case has a 300mAh battery built-in, but since its companion app will push data to it over Bluetooth your iPhone 6’s battery will still take a small hit to keep the E-ink screen’s content updated.

Oaxis hasn’t announced the inkCase’s price or when exactly it will be available, just that it will be released this spring. I really hope this works as advertised.

Back to the Future DeLorean iPhone 6 Case: It’s About Time

Along with the Tim Burton Batmobile iPhone 6 case, Bandai also added this Back to the Future DeLorean DMC-12 to its Crazy Case series. The case has light up headlights and flux bands, and its hood and front tires slide away to expose the iPhone 6’s camera and side buttons.

Batmobile iPhone 6 case is themed after the Tim Burton movies

Batmobile iPhone Case 1

Everything about the iPhone 6 screams “go big or go home”, especially for the Plus version, so the cases have no choice but to follow suit. See what happens once you decide to give your iPhone the Bruce Wayne treatment right below these lines.

What you see in these pictures is the greatest iPhone 6 case in the universe, themed after the Batmobile from the classic Tim Burton movies – it is meant only for those users who have given up on carrying their iPhones in their pockets and would rather protect what they love with the caped crusader’s theme.

Because this is a near perfect replica, it doesn’t come cheap. A batmobile case will set you back some $50 USD, but once you see the amount of detail, the built-in LEDs, and the projector that displays Batman’s logo on any surface, you will understand where your money is going. We’re assuming that the phone will get rather unwieldy with such a massive case, but that’s entirely the point: be as over the top as Batman himself.

See a few more takes and angles of this amazing case in the video below. And, if you like dubstep, you’re in for a treat.

Tim Burton Era Batmobile iPhone 6 Case Is Massive

I’m a big fan of the Batman movies, at least the later ones with Christian Bale in them. I didn’t like the campy, cartoon-like early Batman flicks from Tim Burton. If you did like those flicks, here is your next smartphone case.

bat-case_1zoom in

It has LED lighting effects, and even has a projector on the back that throws the Batman logo on stuff. Around the home button of the iPhone, which is under the car, looks like a utility belt.

This case is designed for the iPhone 6 and you would need the world’s baggiest pants to get the smartphone in your pocket while in this case. If you prefer the newer Tumbler case, we have seen that one before. You can’t fit it in a pocket either.

The Burton Batmobile case sells for roughly $50(USD), though you might have to import one if you want one.

Review: Pelican Protector Case for iPhone 6

protector images from sell sheet.indd
We were sent a Pelican Protector Case for our iPhone 6 for review. The case is available in 6 different color choices, we went with a black one (with blue trim). Out of the box the case is a one-piece case that slips right over the phone very easily. It’s a rubbery material with enough give to let your phone in but also rigid enough to hold it firmly in place. Inside it’s soft so it won’t scratch the back of your phone.
pelican protector1
As you can see from our photo, the front side of the case does have a small “lip” that extends upwards around the screen. This is definitely a plus as it protects the phone if you place it face down by keeping the glass screen off the table (and could potentially help in case of face down drops).
pelican protector2
The back of the case has an attractive two-tone color scheme with a pair of horizontal raised stripes. The Pelican branding is the same color as the case so while you can tell who made the case, you’re not a walking advertisement. As you can see there are cutouts for the camera lens and flash. We found them large enough that they did not interfere with camera usage in any way.
pelican protector side
From the side view you can see the recessed area for the volume on/off switch. Larger fingers might find it a little tough at times to slip in there to press it (although it’s typically not an often used switch anyway). The case overlays both the volume control switches below that and the power button on the opposite side. Pressing the case to hit these buttons is not really as smooth as we would like but on the other hand it can also prevent you from accidentally hitting it and turning your phone off by mistake. Another cutout so you could press the buttons directly would probably be ideal.
pelican protector bottom
Here’s the bottom of the case. As you can see the case allows access to the port as well as clearings for the microphone, headphone jack, and speaker. The depth of the case made it a little tricky to plug in the lightning cable, we have to kind of guide it in there somewhat carefully.

Overall the case has a really clean look to it and nice feel in the hands. The material is a non-slip grippy type and the slightly rounded edges make it easy to hold. The case is certainly not the slimmest you can buy and it does add a small bit of size to the phone but that’s a tradeoff for padding that will protect your phone in the (likely) event of a drop. It weighs 1.4 ounces which adds minimal weight to the phone. It does not include a screen protector, so that’s something you will need to buy separately if you desire.

Bottom line: very solid case, looks great, will protect your phone.

Note: the case is exclusive to AT&T, you can buy it for $40 on their site here.

iPhone 6/6 Plus & Samsung Galaxy Note 4 80x Telescope Lens: Closer than Closer

We’ve seen a microscope add-on for iOS devices that has 80x magnification. The Super Spy telescope lens for the iPhone 6, iPhone 6 Plus and Samsung Galaxy Note 4 on the other hand has 80x optical zoom. Apparently that’s enough to see people’s faces clearly from up to 100m (approx. 330ft) away.

The telescope comes with a tripod and a compatible lens mount that doubles as a protective case for the phones.

That definitely won’t fit in your pocket. You can order the Super Spy telescope lens from Brando for $220 (USD) each. The store also has more affordable telescopes that have 50x and below optical zoom.

Why The iPhone 6 is an iPad Killer

iPad Mini 3

As the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus achieve massive success, new statistics suggest that Apple may have inadvertently killed off the iPad.

Few can deny that the newly released iPhone 6 and 6 Plus have been a massive success. Within three days on sale the two phones racked up 10 million sales between them and quickly became the fastest selling iPhones of all time.

The phones were even able to shrug off controversy when iPhone 6 Plus Bendgate hit. The large aluminium body of the iPhone 6 Plus meant that it was incredibly malleable and prone to bending under pressure or even when put in a tight trouser pocket.

However, as Apple shrugged off reports of bending, it’s now being suggested that the iPhone 6 Plus’ incredi-size could have led to more problems. In fact, the handset could be an iPad killer.

The data has been collected by bookmark and video app pocket which has conducted research across from millions of articles and videos. For their study they examined a sample pool of 2 million opens of articles and videos, comparing behaviour of those who had upgraded from an iPhone 5/5S to an iPhone 6/6 Plus.

What their results deemed is that those with an iPhone 6 or 6 Plus spent more time looking at saved content on the iPhone 6/6Plus even when they owned an iPad or not. In short, it means that the new iPhones have given people less of a reason to use the iPad.

A possible cause for this are those larger screens. With bigger screens comes the ease of reading and so with the iPhone 6 Plus (especially) being a bridge between the smaller iPhones or old and the a bigger iPad, there’s little reason to shell out for an expensive tablet.

However, pocket also notes that their data may be skewed a little. As the devices have just been released, people may be providing the most attention to their new iPhones because they’re still appreciating the newness of them. Not all of the data can be dismissed like that though so Apple will still want to be careful not to shoot themselves in the foot in future.

iPhone 6 Scratched Screen Issue Could be the New ‘Bendgate’

iPhone 6 Plus vs iPhone 6

After iPhone 6 Plus Bendgate upset many Apple fans, yet another issue with the iPhone 6′s hardware threatens to disappoint.

Announced back in September, the iPhone 6 and the iPhone 6 Plus quickly became a ‘must have’ item. Only, upon release, Apple’s latest flagship smartphone didn’t display the quality that had been offered.

While a plethora of iOS 8 problems (including one that wouldn’t let users make calls) broke the software, iPhone 6 Plus Bendgate was a massive hardware problem instead. Thousands of users reported that the aluminium body of their iPhone 6 Plus had been bending under pressure – including when the phone was put into a tight, jean pocket.

At the time, Apple stock prices tumbled and so the company vehemently denied it saying that just nine people had reported bending. But with iPhone 6 screens now also being an issue, this is one problem the company can’t afford to ignore.

According to AppleInsider, many iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus users have had to cart their handsets off to Apple Stores to report odd scratches with their screens. Users in the official forum are reporting that the scratches even show up after the utmost of care and the thread has now been viewed over 100,000 times, seeming to suggest that plenty are looking for advice. Meanwhile, the publication also notes that the scratches on their iPhones were so deep that they could be felt with a thumbnails and seen when the device is off.

The reason for this could be the fact that the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus have no bezel as Apple have used a curved display glass to make the phone look and feel better instead. But at what cost? With the previous iPhone 5 design thrown out (the iPhone 5 used flat pieces of glass surrounded in thermoplastic and polymer), the new iPhone 6 models offer lesser shock resistance and less scratch resistance too since laying your phone on its face leaves it completely vulnerable to scratches from whatever you laid it down on.

Sadly, while the problem seems to be quite a serious issue, Apple doesn’t have specific rules on how to deal with it. Some users said that they got new screens from the Apple Store while others said that heading in-store proved fruitless. Still, if you are having problems with your iPhone’s screen, you should at least test your chances and visit Apple to see what they can do.

Pinc Headset and iPhone 6 Put VR at Your Fingertips

Pinc VR Headset 01

Virtual reality headsets are not yet mainstream, but they have already gone past being only an accessory for gaming. Pinc VR pairs up with the iPhone 6 to show us how the UI of the future could look like.

Following Samsung’s example of creating a VR headset that requires a smartphone to function, Pinc developed one that works in tandem with an iPhone 6 to give people control over a Minority Report-like UI. Besides the headset, the setup also includes two rings which need to be placed on the index fingers to enable the headset to track the movement of the hands.

“We see the opportunity for VR as much broader than just gaming. Areas like everyday computing, productivity and commerce are very interesting for us. When we can control mobile applications in 3D environments, we get into a new realm of computing” said Milan Baic, President of Cordon, who’s heading Pin? product development.

There are plenty of possible applications for such a VR headset, and the first one is obviously related to the way people interact with their mobile devices. Having multiple screens one next to another could enable users to type text messages while watching a clip or scrolling a website, even though only one of the screens is in focus and the others occupy the peripheral vision.

“The biggest limitation for customers, developers and brands is the screen and interaction size on mobile devices,” pointed out Baic. This VR headset really has the potential of redefining multi-tasking on mobile devices. There are several ways to display the mobile screens next to each other, including Tile, Spider, Cabinet, Horizon, Carousel, and Hover. Users are encouraged to pick the mode that suits their needs best.

Pinc could change the way we interact with maps, and this is something not many VR headset manufacturers have thought of. Needless to say, using Pinc for directions while driving would have disastrous results. Maybe an AR headset would be better in that case, or in the case of motorcycle drivers, an AR helmet.

Not at last, the Pinc VR headset could turn shopping into a completely new experience. There are already plenty of websites that showcase their products in 360-degree views, but what if we could see them in 3D, right in front of our eyes.

The Pinc VR headset is available for pre-order on the manufacturer’s website for CAD $99. The manufacturer of Pinc even provides an SDK that app developers can use to make their software compatible with the VR headset.
