The pandemic gave Sergio Spinel, an interior architect and furniture designer, a very unique opportunity to relook his craft as something that’s more than what most people perceive it as. Decor serves a very fixed set of purposes, combining form and function, but with COVID-19, Spinel realized his decor could promote safety too. Meet the POD, the coat-hanger reinvented.

Calling the POD a coat-hanger seems a little reductionist, now that I think of it. The device gives you a place to hang your coats, hats, place your shoes, store/charge your phone, keep your keys, and even provide a dedicated hook for your face-mask. Designed to be the last piece of furniture you interact with on your way out, and the first when you return from the outdoors, the POD stores your belongings, while also sanitizing them with PCO and UVC technology. The vertical wood-veneer pillar comes with a sliding door that opens when you approach it (thanks to a motion sensor at its base), revealing the organizing space within. Hooks give you a place to hang your coat, hats, and even your masks, while a tray at waist-level provides the perfect place to keep your wallet/purse, keys, and even wirelessly charge your smartphone.

The POD uses a variety of technologies to upgrade the furniture experience into something that explores the word ‘functional’ more literally. The sliding door ensures you never really have to touch the POD, and a partnership with California-based IRTRONIX gives POD state-of-the-art sanitizing tech. Once the door of the POD closes, a combination of photocatalytic air filtration along with UV-C rays helps kill microorganisms that may be lingering on the surface of your clothes and EDC, while even eliminating odor-molecules too, making your coat, hat, shoes, and masks fresh again, while ensuring your wallet, keys, and purse are germ-free, and your phone is sanitized and charged. A typical POD cycle will run 2 hours unless you interrupt the cycle.

Available in 3 sizes, the POD approaches furniture with a very different design brief. Its wooden pillar-esque form feels visually commanding, while also complementing the space, and the POD even works as an ambient floor-lamp when it isn’t actively disinfecting your belongings. However, this novel approach and avant-garde tech comes at a price. The POD Mini retails for $810 a piece, while Magnus, the largest variant, can cost as much as $1595. Some may say it’s perhaps too expensive for the average home, but I can totally see the POD finding its place in hotel rooms and the like!

This Samsung Mask-Cleaner will disinfect your face-mask with UV-C light

Created by Jungkwang Hwang as a fan-made concept for Samsung, the 0° Clean is a nifty flat-bed UV-C sanitizer that uses a combination of ultraviolet light and dry air to cleanse and blow-dry your mask. It comes with a detachable cylindrical battery-unit (with a built-in display) that you can easily snap onto the sanitizing flat-bed to power it.

The bed’s space is big enough for almost any flat surgical or cloth mask. Just place the mask in, shut the lid, and switch it on using a button on the side. The UV-C lights neutralize any microorganisms, and the hot air (which blows from the bottom and the sides) dries off any perspiration on the mask, so you can wear it after a few hours knowing that it’s dry and sterile. The circular display can even calculate how much dust and particulate matter is on the mask – so you know when to dispose of your surgical mask or give your cloth mask a thorough wash, so it’s as good as new!

Designed to cover the important bases, the SaniCase holds/disinfects your face mask, and even dispenses hand-sanitizer, all in a product that’s roughly the size of a roll of quarters.

Milan-based Salvo Lo Cascio designed the SaniCase as a response to a common problem he saw with people who wore masks. During brief intervals when they took their mask off to eat or drink, they’d often end up putting their masks on tables, armrests, or back in their pockets along with their phone and keys. Designed to give people a place to safely store their masks when not in use, the SaniCase comes with a cylindrical compartment lined with UV-C lights on the inside. When you don’t need the mask, just slip it into its protective casing and it’ll get sanitized too. Speaking of which, the base of the SaniCase even has a push-to-deploy hand-sanitizer bottle on it, allowing you to periodically clean your hands too. By helping disinfect your hands as well as your face-mask, the SaniCase covers all the critical areas to prevent germs from accidentally entering your system. Besides, its portable avatar and optional lanyard make it really easy to carry around with you!

Salvo Lo Cascio developed the SaniCase as a concept to address a common problem, but the designer is now working with vendors, producers, and partners to help bring his idea to life!

This UV-Sanitizer hub kills any germs lingering on your toothbrush in just 30 seconds

Just 30 seconds of exposure to UV light can practically kill any bacteria or virus that may be lurking around between the bristles of your toothbrush. The Oclean was designed to help sanitize the one product that’s responsible for your daily oral wellbeing – the toothbrush. Given that it’s something that just lies around in the open all day and just gets rinsed before entering your mouth, the Oclean helps quickly and effectively sterilize your toothbrush before (and even after) use.

Designed as a quick sanitation-station for your brushes, the Oclean has two zones, an active ultraviolet zone that blasts your bristles with UV-C light to kill microorganisms, and a regular storage zone for keeping your toothbrushes at other times. Just before brushing, take your brush from the storage zone and place it in the UV-C zone for roughly a minute… then rinse, paste-up, and begin your brushing routine. The wall-mounted Oclean works as a neat brush-holder too, holding as many as 5 brushes, while being able to actively sanitize 3 at a time (thanks to a pull-down switch) that helps activate the UV light whenever you need.

Toast the bacteria off of your smartphones!

We all collectively want to roast this pandemic out of existence, it has truly turned us all into Monica Geller with the constant disinfecting and cleaning things. Our phones are actually dirtier than toilet seats and we obviously use it all the time, so considering the rise of the bacteria we should make sure to also sanitize our phones along with our groceries (what a time to be alive). Combining two of Monica Geller’s favorite things, cooking + cleaning, this neat toaster actually is a smart appliance that disinfects your phone.

This conceptual toaster was designed to make disinfecting your phones a little easier and, honestly, more fun! Instead of the usual wipe down, this turns the task into a small interaction with the product that leaves you with a nice feeling instead of “I have to wipe my phone 25 times a day because there is a pandemic”. It aims to make the interaction between products and people more playful. The toaster also charges your phone while disinfecting it which is a nice way to reduce your screen time, I mean your phone is being “toasted” so you can’t take it out till it’s done! While the concept is still being developed, I assume it uses UV light to disinfect and sanitize the phone while wirelessly charging it.

The physical form is that of a minimal, modern toaster – something we recognize and value. While we are on that topic, we could also have a panini press or grill that does the same job for tablets and laptops! It reminds me of how the fresh plates at a restaurant are always warm and that leaves you with a sense of them being clean. That is the very emotion I gather when I imagine using this smartphone toaster to disinfect and charge my phone. Food and technology are evidently my two favorite things and if they are disinfecting, then its a win-win in this crazy world!

My hands have begun permanently smelling of isopropyl alcohol and citrus. That does make me feel safe, mentally, but knowing that germs can still get on my hands through touching surfaces is something that constantly worries me… The fact that I find myself writing about phone-chargers with sterilizing UV lamps in them should be indication enough.

Call it caution, call it paranoia, or just common sense, but it sounds like a better idea to sterilize the surfaces your hands touch, rather than just your hands… right?
