IKEA-worthy furniture designs that are the ultimate storage + display solutions for your modern home!

If you’re an independent millennial who recently moved out of their family home and into their own, then a major issue that you may be dealing with almost every day…is space constraint! Our modern millennial homes have many virtues, but one thing they lack is space! Space constraint is something most of us end up dealing with every day. Smart storage solutions can be lifesavers in such tricky and compact situations. And to make your lives easier, we’ve curated a whole collection of storage solutions that come in the form of furniture designs that, to be honest, are IKEA-worthy! Not only do these products comfortably store your belongings, but they’re also perfect for displaying those special items that you don’t feel like shutting away in a dusty cabinet. From a modular shelf unit inspired by the architecture of Bangkok’s storefronts to a bookshelf that hides a sleek staircase- these innovative storage and display solutions are the IKEA-worthy additions your home needs!

Tenement H is a modular cubby storage system that reflects the exhibition’s ‘domestic’ theme. Inspired by the multifaceted facades of Bangkok shophouses, Tenement H features customizable barriers that range from scissor gates to accordion doors, shutters, and railings. Constructed from aluminum, Tenement H is modular and versatile by design, allowing access to the storage units from all sides and multifunctional as a semi-partition for your room as well. Coated in glossy optic white, scarlet red, and light blue, the modules of Tenement H mimic the color scheme of Bangkok’s city storefronts. Each unit can be configured according to what your space allows–for smaller spaces, Tenement H can be built up vertically while larger spaces would allow for a wider base.

Although their motto is “No tools, no hassle”, the most defining characteristic of staxxiom’s furniture is that it’s so visually simple, you don’t even need a manual. With laser-cut pieces of wood that simply interlock to create your design, staxxiom is building on IKEA’s DIY culture by making their furniture more efficient, more eco-friendly, and as simplified as possible. That last part works in staxxiom’s favor too, because the simplified design gives their furniture a unified, wonderfully minimal aesthetic, along with the added benefit of being ridiculously easy to build too. Try, for a second, to describe the parts of a table in the simplest way possible. You’ve got 4 legs and a tabletop surface, right? In reality, though, furniture is often much more complex than that. There are many more aspects, like glue, screws, bolts, threaded inserts, rubber feet, etc. that go into making a great table that you often forget to describe. staxxiom’s designs outright do away with these minor complexities by keeping their furniture designs as visually and physically simple as possible.

Amidst the catalog of accessories is a basket storage system that doubles as a wood-and-crate step ladder, ideal for the kitchen space or bathroom to store toiletries and reach taller heights. Then, there’s a series of photo frames that can store paper goods like notes and business cards in an integrated slot that traces the perimeter of each frame. Using their own homes and colleagues’ homes as their main source of inspiration, the design students even made niche items like an insect house made from wire and hollow bamboo that could be hung outside an apartment window for hummingbirds and honeybees to drop by and visit.

Furnicloud essentially functions as a system of aluminum rods that can be configured to attach different container modules and create more storage space. Composed primarily of boxes that come with lids and doors, the rods can be vertically placed in varying shapes for the boxes to attach to and fill. The boxes that come with Furnicloud come with drawers, doors, and shelves to optimize their storage capabilities. In addition to storage boxes, Furnicloud includes mirrors, lights, hangars, and other accessory-sized storage containers that can be strewn from the aluminum rods, stabilizing the furniture system as a whole. Constructed entirely from aluminum, Furnicloud comes in different shades, coats, and finishes, ensuring that each furniture system can be customized for each given living space.

While Riders Gonna Ride is a lifestyle brand whose roots come from mountain biking, Bike Box is a storage solution designed for bikers everywhere– from the mountains to the city streets. Bike Box is modular by design and built from black CDF and beech wood to ensure a versatile, yet durable storage unit. Constructed like a storage unit for a professional locker room, Bike Box’s frame is built from CDF, or Compact Density Fibreboards, a highly compressed material often chosen for its water-resistant and long-lasting nature. The storage found on each Bike Box is made available through a peg and socket system of wooden pegs and accompanying sockets. When customized to hang your bike or orient shelving units, the pegs can be positioned however each bike owner sees fit.

Tiny home designs are some of our favorite designs, mainly because they have forced designers to look beyond the obvious space-consuming solutions and think literally inside the tiny home box for out-of-the-box solutions! The stair cupboard manages to do the same and beautifully, with super tight-fitting steel sliding stair in a bicolor oak closet that slides out with ease. The staircase also doubles as a temporary storage space for knick-knacks and other items in the bookshelf when not in use. The dark steel staircase creates a strong contrast to the pale wood while matching the industrial-chic vibe of the remaining apartment. Villa Roco was designed to house a generation of one family that can live together and apart in one plot with its intuitive design. Who said an entire family couldn’t live in a smaller space with their privacy intact!

The idea for the Parachute Wall Shelf came to designer Yusuke Watanabe, funnily enough, as he was listening to Coldplay’s first album titled “Parachutes”. Derived from the Italian word “parare” (to protect) and the French “chute” (to fall), this award-winning universal shelf holds anything in place! Its clever design is influenced by how clothes pegs secure objects on a clothesline by clipping onto them. The multiple pegs or planks on the Parachute Wall Shelf hold your objects in place by gently ‘clipping’ them to the wall. Made from colored sheet metal stripes that almost look like a parachute’s cloth with their wavy design, the Parachute Wall Shelf looks like abstract art when not in use. It sits flat against the wall (unlike most shelves with cantilever forwards), looking like framed art until you tip one of the ‘pegs’ forward and use it to store objects or to even hang items of clothing like your coat, scarf, or hat.

PaiPai Pets’ double basin cat kennel is a cat tower and console storage cabinet in one. Looking at the kennel head-on, two wide doors border a narrower middle door, which opens up to the kennel’s storage unit and jungle-gym interior. On the left and right sides of the kennel, there’s enough space to fit two large litter boxes, which are always accessible through the middle door’s open porthole. Behind the kennel’s center cabinet, storage shelves can be found where cat owners can stow away smaller items like cans of wet cat food and litter scoopers. Painted in bright white, with natural wood accents along the perimeter, the kennel can remain discreet even in busier home spaces like the living room or den. Along the sides of the kennel, smaller portholes allow for plenty of airflows as well as a fun way for you to play whack-a-mole with your cat.

Orte loop

In urban homes, one often has to compromise on the kind of furniture they would like because there isn’t enough space to have a separate piece for each function – in this case, Orte saves the space you would need for a full shelf and a mirror by blending them into one. Its limestone base supports a rotating wooden frame with the mirror on one side and six hidden shelves on the other. The pop of red brightens up the corner where the furniture will be and stretched oblong shape makes it easy to fit in any corner. It can be used as a dresser, a bookshelf, or the stuff you need to grab quickly without it being on display always.

To give the studio space more defined and delineated areas, Alexander Kudimov and Daria Butakhina of Ruetemple, built an elevated module from wood, with plenty of storage options and a cave-like zone that works as the studio’s enclosed bedroom space. The idea to create a bedroom module initially came from Kudimov’s and Butakhina’s plan to build a wooden structure that would absorb the studio’s many functional elements, including storage space, a living area, and a platform area for getting ready in the morning. The bedroom module mainly contains the studio’s sleeping area– a secluded section of the elevated platform that provides a space for the bed to remain separate from the rest of the apartment. The cozy den remains hidden from view for the most part, but a large window situated at the head of the bed dissolves the barrier between the studio’s hallway and the newly formed bedroom.

Scandinavian-inspired Storage Solutions for the modern millennial home owners who love an element of minimalism!

Our modern millennial homes have many virtues, but one thing they lack is…space! Space constraint is a major issue in the cramped apartments most of us end up in today. Although smart storage solutions can be a lifesaver in such tricky and compact situations. But let’s be honest, some of the shelf designs in the markets these days can be downright hideous. They may rate high on form and functionality and even manage to do their job pretty well, but when it comes to aesthetics, they can be an eyesore. But there are some ingenious furniture designers out there who have incorporated Scandinavian aesthetics + functionality into the simple shelf. Have you ever come across Scandinavian designs? There’s something so simply minimal, quaint, and awe-spiring about them. They manage to speak volumes without being loud, nor saying much. They always leave you with a warm feeling in your heart, and intense admiration for the attention to detail, and the delicate touches each design consists of. And these Scandinavian-inspired shelving designs promise to do exactly that! Modern and minimal, these shelving units are the storage solutions you’ve been looking for.

Designed by Julien Renault for Cruso, the NOTES Shelves is “an invitation to play with compositions and colors”. The artfully crafted slabs of light oak slide into a steel frame, creating a clean and minimal wall-mounted shelf that provides a wonderful storage space, while also allowing you to proudly display your favorite objects and artifacts. The shelves are so simple to set up, that you can do it by yourself at home, with the help of a standard tool (which is provided along with the shelving unit). The NOTES Shelves’ edges have been uniquely sanded and rounded, making them soft and smooth to touch.

The Corner Shelves by Dose of Modern is a pair of square-shaped shelves that smoothly intertwine with one another, creating a cute little matrix of shelves! The shelves have been designed to be fitted into the corners of your home, thereby ensuring they do not take too much space, while they faithfully store your belongings. The wall shelves come in two color options – a clean white, and light beige. Their minimal aesthetics and colors help them artfully merge into any living space or room they are placed into.

Designed by Pierre Charrié for Junddo Furniture, the Tana Modular Shelves is a configurable bookshelf whose dimensions can be selected and customized via an online configurator! So you can pick and create the ideal bookshelf for your home, according to your books and space requirements. Solid wood planks with soft rounded edges that are held together by a strong joinery system constitute the modular shelving unit.

Student designers Calvin and Bence recently created their own interpretation of entryway storage with Bügal, a piece of fusion furniture that’s one half coat rack and one half shelf system. When conceptualizing Bügal, the student designers relied on 3D printing to establish a mold for the unit’s body before grinding, smoothing, and painting it over to achieve its finished, semi-matte, silicone-style look. The hybrid unit of furniture hangs from a wooden peg in a similar fashion to the traditional clothes hanger, but it ditches the hook grip for a more secure peg and socket.

Designed by Maximilian Lötzer, the MYX shelf comprises of three elongated slabs of varying lengths, each crafted from birch wood. The slabs are held together by orange-colored leather straps, creating a product that combines the modern and traditional principles of carpentry and saddlery. The leather and wood complement each other, and merge with one another seamlessly, leading to a minimal shelving unit inspired by the functionality and aesthetics of Scandinavian design.

The SMĪLE Shelf may officially be an acronym for Sustainable Module for your Inspired Living Environment, but I’d like to believe it’s called SMĪLE because it literally puts smiles on peoples’ faces with its minimalist design and unique back-story. This modular shelf, designed for practically any interior aesthetic, any room, and for any scenario, comes made from recycled bamboo chopsticks. It is a modular system that relies on recycled steel frames that fix to a wall, holding shelves in between. The steel frames can be arranged practically in any orientation and arrangement, giving you the freedom to create your own shelving design that can even be expanded if you want to, in the future!

The Looped Shelf by We Do Wood is a true example of authentic Nordish design. Crafted from smoked oak, the shelf features looped-shaped brackets. The smoked oak brings an element of warmth to any living space, with the brass mounting brackets perfectly contrasting against it. You can set up multiple Looped Shelves to build a sturdy shelving system that creates its own powerful presence in any room.

The Sena Wall Shelf by Vitamin Design is made up of narrow elements constructed from solid wood. Subtle and reduced lines characterize the body of the wooden shelf. The shelf can be built made to measure, and configured according to your personal preferences. It’s also available in a wide variety of wood – ash, beech, core beech, cherry, maple, oak, knotty oak, walnut, knotty walnut. The extensive material and customization options help you create a shelving unit that’ll perfectly meet your storage needs.

Designed by Martin Keller, the Pereire Bookshelf is an elegant and simple shelving unit that stores your books and other items quite spaciously and artfully. A long solid wooden pole on one side of the bookshelf supports the entire unit, while elongated wooden slabs function as the storage platforms for your belongings. The other end of the bookshelf is meant to be supported by a wall, making it partially wall-mounted.

The Up-Cycled Cat Shelf use discarded pieces of wood that are finished, sanded, and smoothened to a standardized shape before being clad in a felt carpet for the cat to comfortably rest on without their nails digging into the wood. The shelf rests on two sturdy brackets sourced from IKEA, creating a setup that isn’t just robust and reliable but is literally just made out of 3 parts. Designed to look chic, but also be functionally sound for your neurotic cat, the Up-Cycled Cat Shelf can be placed anywhere at home, from the living room or bedroom to even the bathroom. It’s a shelving unit for your kitties!

This coatrack turned shelf brings a modern, quirky spin to your entryway storage!

Every entryway should have some form of storage bin where you can throw your keys, your jacket, and all the stuff in your pockets collected during the day. It comes in handy when you’re running late and don’t have the time to spend looking for where you last tossed your keys.

Calvin and Bence designed Bügal for the sake of combining the dual functions from a coat rack and a shelving unit, to provide a unique storage system that could fit into any entryway, office space, or bedroom.

Thanks to its familiar shape and uncomplicated design, Bügal looks at home in any space. The combination of a wider frame with a sturdier gripping method allows Bügal to hang more than one piece of clothing and to store even bulkier portable items like film cameras and potted plants. Bügal’s shape is akin to that of a regular clothes hanger, but its deep pocket creates space for everyday carry items like keys, wallets, and smartphones. By merging the practical function of a coat rack with all the storage space provided by a drawer or shelf, Bügal can store a lot of your things and also help cut down the time spent turning your living room inside out to find your keys.

Designers: Calvin Middel & Bencekommt

With a deep shelf and wide-body, Bügal can hang heavier coats and store even your bulkier items.

Thanks to its shelving feature, Bügal can function as a display unit for things like potted plants and art decor.

Bügal’s initial prototype was formed from styrofoam and then given a mold through 3D printing.

Through post-processing work, Bügal was sanded, carved, and painted over to give it a glossy, yet matte look.

With a wooden frame, Bügal is both durable and handy.

Bügal ditches the tradition hook grip used by most clothes hangers for a more secure peg and socket hanging method.

This playful no-screw-no-glue shelf uses modular interlocking pieces and your imagination!

Taking DIY furniture to a more functional and playful level, KUR!O’s shelving unit doesn’t just let you build a shelf, it lets you build YOUR OWN shelf the way you see fit. KUR!O’s design features a simple grid base that you wedge shelving-plates into. The plates interlock with each other, creating walls and floors for your shelf, allowing you to store all your belongings in the dedicated spaces you planned out for them!

The KUR!O was featured here on YD after winning a Gold A’ Design Award, and has, since then, developed and refined into a product that consumers can now buy and own. The construction hasn’t changed much fundamentally, but a few tweaks make it more durable, and allow you to even dock dowels/pegs into it to hang items like keys, photos, or that dreamcatcher you bought at the flea market.

The base of the shape-shifting, infinitely customizable shelf is its underlying grid, made from sandwiched wood-fiber boards. The cuts in the grid go as much as 20mm deep, allowing you press-fit powder-coated steel panels into it. The steel panels come in a variety of colors, giving the KUR!O its uniquely vibrant appeal, and feature carefully-placed cuts that let individual panels interlock into each other. The 2mm thick panels are heavy-duty enough to take on large loads, making the KUR!O robust, despite the fact that there isn’t any screwing or gluing of parts. Each KUR!O even comes with a set of 8mm thick steel sticks or dowels that peg into the circular holes at the intersection of the cutouts. Plug a stick in and you instantly have yourself a series of hooks right beside your shelf-spaces so you can both hang as well as place items on your KUR!O.

KUR!O’s promise of playful modularity even extends to the entire board itself, allowing you to put together multiple base-boards to create a larger shelving unit for trophies or family photos in your hall, tools in your workshop, instruments in your studio (those stick/dowels are perfect for hanging long cables), or items in your workplace. KUR!O’s fun nature is further reinforced by its absolutely delicious color scheme that adds a pop of contemporary color to otherwise dull spaces. Use it as a mantelpiece, as an unorthodox wardrobe for your hats, specs, coats, or a bookshelf that you can constantly customize as you go… and if you’re looking for more fun, use the KUR!O’s stainless-steel panels as a quirky base for your magnets too!

KUR!O — A Plug’n’Play Shelving System

The KUR!O is a modular shelving unit that gives you the freedom to re-design it over and over with ease and fun.

KUR!O combines an incredibly simple plug’n’play system with a sturdy and timeless design and turns seemingly mundane furniture into a piece of modern art.

Board and panels are available in various colors and sizes giving the freedom to create customized looks. Furthermore, KUR!O can be extended by joining multiple KUR!Os. So you can fill a whole wall with your very own composition.

Endless Possibilities with the KUR!O

COAT HANGER PLUS. Our entrance area actually requires more than a coat hanger. We have keys, sunglasses, scarves, a wallet, a watch, some jewelry, a USB stick and what not… KUR!O offers an all in one solution to place your little everyday belongings in one stylish place. The sticks come in really handy here!

ORDERLY BEAUTY. Lots of little bits and pieces gather in our bathrooms, often in undefined places. Thanks to the moisture-resistant materials KUR!O could be a stylish solution for your bathroom.

EVER CHANGING BOOKSHELF. We all love books. How about keeping them in reach and present them beautifully? The panels are made of steel and can easily hold a bunch of them.

COLLECTORS DISPLAY. The original idea for KUR!O was to create a modular shelf to display these wondrous things while being able to change them through over time. So if you collect stuff KUR!O is a no-brainer!

SPICE RACK WITH BENEFITS. KUR!O changes with your needs and stays relevant for much longer than your typical rack.

KIDS’ FAVORITES: Kids love stuff! And these things often change. Handcrafted paper objects, found natural objects, action figures, toy animals… How about giving your child the opportunity to display these beloved things in a fun way?!

Easy to Use

KUR!O is designed to be fun and versatile. A regular grid of slits and holes in a base board hold the sticks and panels of different sizes. The panels can be placed in any order and interconnect when tucked together vertically and horizontally. Panels and sticks sit 19mm deep inside the board and are held tightly. This system does not require any screws or tools and allows for an instant change of the layout. Plug’n’play!

The Board

The material for these boards is a sophisticated high density wood fibre compound which is completely dyed through, moisture resistant, non-toxic and of high stability. Some of the wood fibers are visible on the surface and gives the boards a natural and lively appearance.

The base of KUR!O is made up of two sandwiched wood fibre boards. The back of all bases will be an 8mm thick fundament. On top sits the 19mm thick main board available in following colors: Black — Blue — Grey — Chocolate — Red — Ocher

Holes and slits go all the way through the top board, meaning the modules will go 19mm deep into the board.

The Modules

The modules are made of powder coated steel, so they are heavy duty and won’t bend with heavy objects on them.

The panels are 2mm thick, the sticks have an 8mm diameter.

Extendable

The boards connect seamlessly when pushed against each other. This way you can extend your area of shelving by combining multiple KUR!Os. That’s where the real fun starts!

The boards can be joined and fixed on the backside with screw-in connectors.

This wall-mounted shelf is actually a micro-fridge!

Main_IMG

Imagine this. You’re in front of your television and you’d really like a nice chilled beer, but you don’t want to walk all the way to the fridge. Or imagine buying groceries but having no space to store them because your fridge is jam-packed with stuff. Now imagine having a dedicated refrigeration unit disguised as furniture right where you need it. That’s the Shelves Fridge by Jinho Han. Designed to look like a shelf but work like a cooling unit, the Shelves is a temporary shelf-fridge that you can place stuff on, instantly chilling/preserving them.

The Shelves comes with a resting platform, a horizontal cooling duct, and a translucent box-cover. The cooling duct can push air either upwards, cooling the stuff kept on the shelf (you’ll have to place the box cover to enclose your bottles/food to cool them better and faster… or the cooling duct can push air downwards, allowing you to hang a shopping bag on it, as the air blows down on your groceries, giving them temporary refrigeration before you take that massive turkey out of the fridge to thaw and create more space for today’s groceries. When you don’t need the Shelves, simply collapse the shelf upwards into the wall and your temporary cooling unit recedes into the background! It would be cool if the ‘closed’ Shelves unit could work as an air-conditioner though…!
