Review: V-MODA Zn In-ear Headphones
In general, I prefer the big, speakerlike sounds of full-size headphones that cover the ears. But when I’m traveling, I usually bring along a pair of in-ear headphones in order to cut down on the bulk. Up until now, I’ve just dealt with the sound quality trade-off for the convenience. However, I think I might have just found a pair of earphones that can nearly keep up with my biggest and best cans.
The V-MODA Zn are the top of the line in-ear headphones from the makers of such excellent headphones as the Crossfade M-100 The Zn headphones are designed to pack audiophile grade sound into a tiny package, and if you ask me, they deliver.
Despite their size, these earphones are a marvel of technology, packing the kind of sound you’d expect from much bigger drivers into something you can fit in your pocket. While they’re not as visually distinctive as V-MODA’s larger headphones, they’re still made from premium materials, with their housings made from shiny zinc alloy. But style is only a small part of why you should buy these headphones. Buy them because they sound phenomenal.
I’m used to wearing a pair of $500 open-back headphones hooked up to an amplifier, but these $180 earphones may have just convinced me that bigger isn’t always better when it comes to sound. From the quietest passages of Beethoven’s 9th Symphony to the ear-busting bass throb of Muse’ Supermassive Black Hole, these headphones simply ROCK. They produce zero perceptible distortion, huge dynamic range, and more volume than you’ll ever need. Bass is punchy, but not overdriven, highs are crisp and compelling without being harsh, and the mids are smooth and natural.
V-MODA says they’ve achieved this incredible performance using a pair of tuned 8mm drivers along with custom-made Italian airflow filters which are said to be available in limited quantities.
In addition to their wondrous sound quality, they offer great comfort and noise isolation, and V-MODA includes a wide variety of ear tips as well as behind-the-ear hooks to ensure they fit every possible ear. They come packed in a handy leatherette case for travel, and also have in-line volume and play/pause controls as well as a microphone for making phone calls.
I highly recommend the V-MODA Zn headphones. You can pick up a pair direct from V-MODA or on Amazon for $180. You won’t regret it. They might just be the last headphones you ever buy.
Review: V-Moda Crossfade M-100 Headphones
I’ve recently been spending some quality time with V-Moda’s substantial Crossfade M-100 headphones, and have been quite impressed with them on virtually every level. Not only do they have great styling and truly impressive build quality, they sound excellent.
The M-100s offer just the right balance of light weight and substance, offering fatigue-free listening, while at the same time providing excellent noise isolation from external sounds. The headphones are constructed primarily from flexible steel, with lightweight polycarbonate enclosures, comfy memory foam ear cushions, and a microsuede headband. While their base design comes in matte black, shadow or white silver, you can also order interchangeable metal ear shields ($25/set) in a wide variety of colors, and they can even be laser engraved with a design or text.
The headphones ship in a sturdy soft-touch zipper case which provides ample space for the headphones when folded, as well as cables and other small accessories. The case also provides a carabiner clip so you can easily hang them from a backpack or bag.
V-Moda includes both a long listening-only cable, and a cable with a microphone and one-button control for smartphones. Both of these are made of braided, tangle-resistant cable. They also include a 3.5mm to 1/4″ stereo adapter for plugging into amplifiers. Out of the box, I connected the M-100s to my iPhone and found the sound they reproduced from such a low power output source to be substantial and pleasing to the ears.
The headphones produce an exceptionally wide soundstage, and despite their ability to reach distortion-free high volume levels without need for an external amplifier, they sound even better when connected to one. Besides my iPhone, I tested the M-100s connected both directly to my iMac, and via my FiiO digital headphone amplifier. Personally, I prefer listening through a headphone amp, as most headphones perform better with the extra power and clean D/A conversion path of such devices.
I love to use tracks from Steely Dan to test the dynamic range and clarity of audio devices, and the M-100s don’t disappoint, reproducing Walter Becker’s plucky guitar and bass while at the same time revealing the subtleties of Donald Fagen’s smooth vocals and piano. Bass is punchy, but not boomy or overbearing, and highs and mids are clear and clean. Beyond the jazz fusion, I threw a variety of tracks at the M-100s, ranging from the edgy electronic beats of LCD Soundsystem to biting rock and rhythm of the Rolling Stones, to the upbeat pop grooves of Pharrell Williams to the classical strings of a Beethoven concerto, and the M-100s handled them all with equal aplomb.
One of the best things about the M-100s is their versatility. In addition to being useful for music and phone calls, they can be used for playing games, thanks to the optional BoomPro ($30), which plugs into headphones and adds a microphone suitable for gaming, online chats or even podcasting. In addition to the BoomPro, V-Moda also offers an optional extended, locking coiled cable ($30), and interchangeable memory foam cushions in three colors.
Overall, V-Moda has crafted a truly special set of headphones with the Crossfade M-100. They offer a substantial, but lightweight design, comfort, versatility and excellent sound, regardless of musical genre. At $310 a pair, they’re not inexpensive, but in my opinion, they’re well worth it.

V-Moda Metallo Case Throws in Guitar Pick for Musicians on the Go
Gadget cases come in a variety of different shapes and colors, and there are more and more minimal cases that help users make a fashion statement, as well as protecting their fancy phones. Some may even come with some odd accessories, like guitar picks!
The slim profile V-Moda Metallo case will protect your precious iPhone 5 from scratches, and it’s machined from a single block of metal. There’s a back plate that needs to be attached with an Allen wrench that’s included in the package. Apparently, when you tighten the case, it makes a sound like loading a gun, and, it’s supposed to make a sound reminiscent of a sword being unsheathed when you remove your phone. Needless to say, I’m all for fancy sounds.
Oh, and there’s also a guitar pick so that musicians will be able to play guitar whenever they want, though it’s not clear if there’s a way to actually stash the pick inside the case, if it’s used in the assembly of the case, or if it’s just a silly item to throw in the package.
The Metallo case costs $101(USD) and is available through V-Moda’s store. There are four colors to choose from.
