PAL is one such wearable device that beautifully simplifies and integrates activity and recovery tracking into a sleek, futuristic, and fashionable wearable. The wearable doesn’t include a digital display, so the activity tracker has been given a minimal and subtle form while being amped with innovative and not-so-minimal tech.

PAL consists of a simple band, with an identifiable pill-shaped motif on the front and the rear of the product. The pill-shaped motif on the rear of the band outlines the interaction zone. You simply double-tap it, to start the tracker and double-tap it again when you want to shut the tracking. The intuitive physical user interface completely eliminates the visual clutter often found on other conventional fitness trackers and watches.

PAL has been equipped with an accompanying Wahoo+PAL app, that utilizes the tracking data collected by the band, to log your activities and vitals. It also uses this data to create a smart recovery regime on your smartphone, once you stop your activities. PAL’s adaptive ecosystem subtly works in the background tracking and creating regimes without reminding you of its existence. OPPO Air Glass is what the Google Glass wishes it became when it grew up…




In a space where tech giants are eyeing the gold rush of augmented and mixed reality dream, OPPO is taking a detour of its own to craft assisted reality display that looks more exciting and practical for heaven’s sake!

At the annual INNO Day 2021 event, the Chinese company has introduced a cool-looking wearable that takes a very distinct approach to the concept of smart glasses. In fact, it is a monocle worn on one side of the custom glass frame to interact with the world around in a non-intrusive manner. Called the OPPO Air Glass, the lightweight wearable is built to display important information at a glance, not obstructing the real-world view in any way. OPPO likes to categorize this smart glass as an assisted reality (or aR) wearable rather than one that’s close to augmented reality. That’s because of the 2D information projected in the field of view of the user as opposed to overlaying the 3D objects.

Air Glass will be a more practical option for the speculated Apple Glasses, and the Google Glass which didn’t entice geeky users that much. The OPPO’s version is made for delivering simpler but timely information in a very non-obstructive way by attaching (via magnetic ports) to a more conventional glass frame. Things like step-by-step navigation while biking, real-time translation (for Chinese, English and Japanese), calendar alerts, weather updates, fitness tracking data, and even teleprompter applications. Users can interact with the monocle glass with voice, hand gestures, head movements and the touch of the fingers.

According to OPPO the lens measures just 0.7mm thick and is inspired by the wings of a cicada. Waveguide display on the Air Glass has a tiny projector -measuring the size of a coffee bean – with Spark Micro Projector to beam monochrome content (in 16-level grayscale or 256-level grayscale) that won’t hurt your eyes with constant usage. The wearable weighing just 30g is powered by the Qualcomm Wear 4100 SoC. It has a battery backup of three hours on active usage and 40 hours on standby.

The cool monocle glass will come in two frame design options, a silver half-frame or a black full-frame in either black or white color options. OPPO Air Glass will be available initially only for Chinese users in limited numbers by the Q1 2022 for an undisclosed price tag.

005G is a neckwarmer designed by Xiaoming for cold winter mornings when hitting the snooze button is all too tempting.

As the seasons change, our bodily needs do too. With winter quickly approaching, the cold, dry air has us shopping for winter accessories like weighted blankets, moisturizers, and steam inhalers. Despite having the heater turned all the way up to stave off the cold, an extra blanket or pair of fuzzy socks always brings just the right amount of coziness. Industrial designer Xiaoming is bringing coziness to this winter season with 005G, a neck warmer that drapes around your shoulders just like a warm towel.

When we first wake up on chilly winter mornings, the last thing we want to do is leave our warm bed sheets and comforters. If only everyone could have heated floors and in-house towel warmers. While we wait for our heated tiles and hot towels to get here, consider 005G the winter accessory that’ll keep us cozy in the meantime.

Shaped like a pair of over-ear headphones, 005G slips around your neck and emanates warmth from its plush, velvet covering to the skin of your neck. With an adjustable temperature dial, users can change the amount of heat they’d like to come from 005G. For cold winter mornings, when hitting the snooze feels more tempting than ever, 005G is there to get us out of bed.

While 005G is primarily designed to keep us cozy and warm in the cold, it’s the perfect accessory for neck pain as well. There’s nothing worse than waking up in the morning with a stiff neck, especially because there’s nothing you can do about it other than wind your neck back and crack it. To keep comfortable while dealing with neck issues like stiff muscles, 005G provides enough warmth to keep us from thinking about the pain.

Layer Design’s meditation headset uses biomorphic patterns to elevate your state-of-mind

While most of us are stressed out the whole day, a tech-infused meditation headset to wind down is a liberation we all could do very well with.

Life has become stressful in modern times with deadlines and other human-induced factors pushing us to the limit of physiological and psychological turmoil. Meditation is one thing that liberates one from the cyclical patterns of daily struggles – infusing a new sense of excitement to experience life to the fullest. When meditation is aided by the sensory input it’s bliss for the pineal gland!

Layer Design has once again demonstrated its knack for winning creations with the LightVision meditation headset designed for US-based tech startup Resonate. The headset is an array of LED lights that create a layer of magic to the visual feed for the user – literally turning the natural videos being cast into a sequence of biomorphic patterns. Amazingly, these patterns are visible to the closed eyes as the ever-changing kaleidoscope of sequences creates a sensory input. This triggers the brain’s “frequency-following response” according to Layer Design.

The minimally designed headset wrapped in textile casing sets a new precedence for the meditation regimes – be it in the morning or while winding down in the night. The ergonomic form of the headset sits comfortably around the face and the eyes for a distraction-free restful state of mind. The latter as you know is very hard to achieve since the mind wanders into realms you otherwise don’t want it to. The whole design of the LightVision headset puts forth a tactile experience to take your meditation routine to the next level.

While one question still lingers on my mind – won’t the play of light and colors for a long duration or even on a daily basis tire the eyes? Won’t it juxtapose with the very calm state of mind that it wants to achieve in the first place? If Layer Design has those issues sorted out, this headset for Resonate could be the catalyst the stressed-out world needs!

Apple ring concept mimics the Apple watch design to amp up their wearable game up by a notch!

Computing on a ring is a concept that has been explored over the years but unfortunately, there has been nothing concrete to state. In an effort to give Apple fans a new reason to be curious, a designer has explored the possibility of an Apple Watch-style ring that one can wear on a finger.

If you’re someone who has felt the Apple Watch you wear is bulky and inconvenient for some reason, or if you wished there was something smaller and more convenient to wear, then Apple may someday grant your wish. The Cupertino giant has forayed into the smart ring arena and has a patent to its name. A patent doesn’t necessarily ensure the innovative product will be commercially available, and that’s been the case with the Apple smart ring.

The act of giving more weightage to other devices – Apple Watch in particular – over the ring, doesn’t imply that Apple has taken a back seat with the idea. The designer’s conception – Apple Ring and Apple Ring Pro – are the adaptation of Apple’s long-time vision of a smart ring and the Apple Watch as a ring. The Ring, in particular, is just about the same smart ring concept that Apple patented in 2015 while the Ring Pro is a nice recreation of the Apple Watch for a ring.

The Ring band has a touchscreen running around it while the Ring Pro has a chiseled form factor and a display that matches the Apple Watch. The rings are both designed in solid metal for durability and owing to their free-flowing design should be pretty comfortable to wear. The Ring Pro may be on the bulkier side given its layout, but the sleek Ring should be a good device to check vital stats while workout or making or receiving calls on the go. Presumably, when something like these rings lands, the Ring Pro-style device would make a smart ring, while the Ring would suit the fitness band tasks.

This wearable smartwatch evolves by not only measuring your blood pressure, but also storing your medication!

The MedBot is a smartwatch concept that monitors each user’s health conditions, measures blood pressure, stores medications and pills, and sets health-specific reminders.

There’s nothing worse than leaving the house without taking your vitamins or prescription medication. Already halfway to work, suddenly you remember your time-dependent antibiotics, but there’s nothing you can do. With smart technology shacking up in every corner of our lives nowadays, there has to be a means to integrate health concerns into portable, wearable technology.

Noticing this vacant space for a solution-based design, architectural designer Batyrkhan Bayaliev produced the MedBot, a smartwatch that monitors health, stores medication, and reminds users when it’s time to take antibiotics and various pills. Intent on exploring the intersection of health and smart technology, Bayaliev created MedBot as a means for everyone to have access to their health and catalog of medications throughout the day, wherever and whenever.

Similar in fashion to an Apple Watch, Medbot maintains a sleek, inconspicuous design that leaves enough room for a storage compartment where users can keep their pills and medication. A full display screen alerts users of their health conditions, spanning from blood pressure levels to medication reminders. Just beneath the display screen, Bayaliev outfitted MedBot with a pill storage compartment that uses a sliding mechanism to open and close.

Inside the compartment, users will find three sections that can store tablets and capsules of varying sizes. The wristband itself is also adjustable by design, allowing users to loosen or tighten their grip around the wrist as needed. With integrated smart technology that alerts users when to take their medicine, measures blood pressure, and sets alarms, as well as an adjustable wrist strap, MedBot is ideal for the modern health-conscious consumer.

The Hakii Ice TWS Earbuds look so incredibly ornamental, they make the AirPods cases feel boring

Instead of creating a sleek design that requires an ugly case, the Hakii Ice cleverly takes care of both aspects by creating a beautifully textured design encased in a protective clear resin outer layer. This seemingly ‘frozen’ design becomes an aesthetic as well as a utilitarian feature that protects the case from damage.

Meet the Hakii Ice. You’ve probably never heard of them, although once you see them, chances are you won’t ever forget them. With perhaps the most memorable design in the earbuds category, the Hakii Ice sport a double shot molded case design that looks almost like the earphones are preserved in a block of ice. The outer transparent layer, and the textured inner layer create an interplay of light and shade, with a touch of refraction, that makes the Ice earphones look incredibly awe-striking. In a world filled with TWS earbud cases that look like floss cases, the Hakii Ice looks like an ornament.

The problem with most TWS earphone cases is the fact that the earbuds, their performance, and the underlying technology get all the focus, making the outer case an afterthought. That, in retrospect, has created the perfect stage for companies like Hakii to put actual design efforts into their case designs (Gravastar went all-out with their Sirius Pro TWS earphone cases too). As its name suggests, the Ice earbuds look like they’re trapped in a block of ice. Designed for active wearers (sportspeople, fitness freaks, etc.), the Ice takes inspiration from ice-based sports, and focuses on creating an impression of being quite literally ‘cool’.

On the technical front, the Hakii Ice are a pair of Bluetooth 5.2 TWS earphones with a semi-in-ear design and a 7-hour battery life. Like any good pair of TWS earphones, they come with minimal latency, pair up quickly, and are intuitive to use, with touch-sensitive panels that let you trigger smart features and control volume and playback. Where they stand apart are in the fact that the earphones have massive 13mm drivers (that’s 2mm larger than the ones found on the AirPods Pro), and the fact that they run DNN (deep neural network) noise-canceling, relying on machine learning to help the earphones get better at isolating and canceling noise with use. They’re great for music, workouts, calls, podcasts, and Hakii’s even made sure the low-latency feature is perfectly tuned for gamers, who like absolutely tight response times.

However, the case remains the Hakii Ice’s magnum opus. Created through as many as 6 different material tests (with 21 separate iterations) for an optimal balance between strength, lightness, heat-resistance, and transparency, the case uses a manufacturing method called double-shot injection molding, which allows you to create a product with two different materials right within one mold in one process. There’s obviously a case (no pun intended) to be made for the fact that websites tend to lean on the side of creating dramatic photogenic product shots, although images of the product circulating on Twitter and the rest of the internet show a earphone case that definitely looks eye-catching to the extent of feeling ornamental. Hakii’s even won a fair bunch of design awards for its previous products (including the Red Dot, IDEA, iF Design, Good Design, and the Design Intelligence Awards). I wouldn’t be surprised if the Ice ended up snagging a bunch of awards too… after all, it blows a breath of fresh air into a category where most TWS Earbud cases look like glossy, spray-painted floss-containers…

The WHOOP 4.0 combines the fitness tracking of a Fitbit with the fashion-appeal of a Livestrong Band





If you’re old enough to remember the Livestrong craze, you’ll attest to the fact that it had a much more widespread cultural impact than the Apple Watch ever did. Promoting millions of sales as well as spawning millions of cheap copies, the Livestrong band was perhaps one of the largest awareness initiatives of our time, raising awareness for cancer and providing support for cancer survivors. Cut to 2021, and the Livestrong band’s been replaced by step-trackers, fitness bracelets, and smartwatches… but there’s a problem. Not many of them compare to how much of a fashion statement those bands were.

Designed to meld the worlds of fashion and fitness, the WHOOP 4.0 band sports a minimalist, sans-screen design that echoes the fashion sensibilities of the Livestrong band. With a design that highlights the fitness tracker’s woven fabric band, the WHOOP 4.0 does two jobs remarkably well – it expertly tracks your fitness stats, and looks good while doing it.

Having garnered the support of world-class sportspeople like LeBron James among other Olympic athletes, WHOOP has revolutionized human fitness and performance through its combination of tracking physiological data and providing real-time effective coaching to help reduce injury and boost performance. Currently in its 4th edition, the band, created by design studio Aruliden for WHOOP, sports a smaller, smarter, more streamlined design that features the tracking device itself, along with an interchangeable fabric band that lets you simply and easily swap bands to suit your fashion needs or match your outfit.

What really sets the WHOOP 4.0 aside is its fashion-friendly design. The product does away with the silicone and plastic constructions seen on most bands, opting instead for a slick wraparound woven fabric that clamps in place using a metal buckle, with the tracker underneath. The tracker sits sandwiched right between the fabric and your body, doing what it needs to do, while staying effectively hidden from view.

“Our innovative design for WHOOP rethought the archetype of the wearable category,” mentions the Aruliden team. All of the team’s design decisions around the WHOOP 4.0 are focused towards combining fashion and tech, while keeping them separated. The world of fashion doesn’t get its fair share of credit. Clothes do so much more than just cover our bodies and indicate cultures/styles. They help regulate our inner temperature, armors help protect against harm, camo-wear helps reduce visibility, safety vests help increase visibility, sports clothing boost your physical abilities, the list goes on… and in the near future, the clothes you wear may be able to prematurely detect and prevent heart attacks.

The Viscero vest by Ireland-based Design Partners is a wearable ECG device that looks like the iconic plain white tee shirt. Designed to do away with those incredibly clunky Holter monitors (that can often increase patient discomfort), the Viscero is simply a white vest you wear underneath your clothing. Unlike the Holter which involves sticking ‘wet’ electrodes to your body and having them connected to a walkie-talkie-sized device that’s perpetually strapped to your chest, Viscero is as easy and freeing as wearing any t-shirt or garment. The body-hugging vest comes with dry electrodes integrated into the tee shirt’s design, placed at strategic points to accurately capture medical data, while the data itself is sent to a compact smart wearable device that attaches to the side of the tee, right above the pocket.

An arrhythmia is an abnormal heartbeat that can be harmless or life-threatening. The most common type is atrial fibrillation (AFib), where the upper heart chambers contract irregularly, increasing the likelihood of blood clots, stroke, heart failure, and other heart-related complications. According to the CDC, it’s estimated that by 2030 as many as 12.1 million people in the United States will annually have AFib.

Detecting Afib isn’t particularly swift or easy either. Unlike an ECG, which just captures data over a short window, checking for Afib requires gathering hours or even days’ worth of heart behavior to check for anomalies. The Apple Watch, which can perform basic ECGs, isn’t designed to continuously check for Afib, which means its accuracy rate falls to around 34% in most adults, according to research. Doctors commonly rely on Holter monitors for shorter monitoring windows (roughly 24 hours), or on invasive methods like implantable loop recorders (ILRs) for long-term capturing. While the Holter seems like the most convenient option, a traditional Holter is uncomfortable to wear and inhibits natural movement, often making the data it collects unrepresentative and unhelpful. This led to Design Partners asking themselves, “How might we create an accurate, unintrusive, and non-invasive solution that could monitor you for weeks or even months?”

Viscero’s biggest innovation is the fact that it contains a carefully designed ECG circuit system right into the fabric. The tee uses a series of dry electrodes that are positioned away from the chest to more peripheral locations while maintaining consistent compression points. This allows the Viscero to sit on your torso as comfortably as a tee would, while in fact, being a medical-grade, 6-lead ECG monitoring system. “Now you can run for the bus, walk your dog, hug your children and unwind on the sofa, without giving Viscero a second thought”, say the team at Design Partners.

Meet the Apple glass concept that pays homage to Steve Jobs’s favorite pair of prescription glasses – the Lunor Classic PP. These countered glasses look absolutely stylish for the generation next crowd- with the frame crafted from lightweight aluminum and the lenses made out of polycarbonate material. The technology of these wearables is honed by an array of six cameras with autofocus lenses, an eye-tracking system with HDR, and gesture recognition. The glasses even track your calorie intake and health status. Coming onto the cameras, two cameras are tucked in the nose-piece assemblies and the other two on the opposite side of each nose piece. Additional cameras and sensors take a position in the crossbar connecting the two lenses. What I like the most besides the glasses is the AirPods style charging case for them!

Designed to be a smart 21st-century dictaphone, Scripter modernizes note-taking by delegating the menial task to a powerful, capable AI. A single button starts and stops the Scripter’s ability to record (so you’ve got control over what the device listens to), and the Scripter’s internal computer can actively transcribe voices across 16 languages, all while accurately editing the transcribed text to add punctuation, paragraphs, capitalization, and event handling syntax, without needing to connect to the internet. The Scripter looks like an outwardly simple device. Its plain design sports a two-part magnetic assembly that lets you easily attach your Scripter to clothes (without needing pins that damage your clothing).

Keeping a track of drivers’ drinking habits is virtually impossible for car rental companies, or is it? With Cue smart wearable ring conceptualized by Risha Garg keeping real-time track of driver’s state is ultra-easy. The smart gadget can be worn like a ring, as it tracks the blood alcohol concentration (BAC) levels by tracking the sweat. A ring is an apt wearable to track sweat as palms and fingers have a large concentration of sweat glands. Also, it keeps a check on the pulse rate and temperature of the driver for tell-tale signs of not fit to drive conditions. All this is synced with the cab service provider’s app to keep the passengers informed of the driver’s BAC levels, and if the ride is actually safe for boarding.

The VR Cap fixes one nagging problem with VR headsets today – the head-mount. The solution is so ingenious, it makes you wonder ‘why didn’t anyone think of this earlier?!’ Most designs till now focus on a headgear that covers your eyes, giving you the look of a very googly-eyed creature. VR Cap solves this by merging the glasses with an existing and comfortable piece of clothing – the humble cap! “VR Cap is the world’s first head-mounted display (HMD) to join a crisp VR display with a detachable, woven head covering”, Compal Electronics mentions. Woven from stretchable fabric, one size fits most heads in comfort, and customizations can be made to accommodate users like ponytails without developing new injection molds.

The wearable medical gadget is still in the concept prototype stage but unlike other designs, this is created in complete synergy between the design team who give direction to the aesthetic requirements, and the technology team who ideate the concept. The end result, a functional gadget that solves the intended purpose while being aesthetically ideal for practical usage. Here it is, the accurate detection of blood oxygen levels of the skin tissue and underlying vessels and capillaries. The oxygen detector is designed for ASON Co. Ltd. and it is highly likely it will make it to the mass consumer market in a couple of years.

So, unlike other contemporary smartwatches on the market, the Wrist (1) will expose internal components by using a crystal clear transparent case, displaying the raw beauty of the precise engineering of what makes the wearable tick from the sides. To keep up with the competition, Nothing will inculcate health and fitness-centric features such as a heart rate monitor and step counter. This is courtesy of the LED and photodiodes that work in tandem with the AI algorithms for the most accurate measurements.

Interestingly the internet is going crazy with the freshly leaked images of the insect eyes like HTC headset that gives off the futuristic vibe. The person in question is trusted leaker Evan Blass who has posted convincing images of HTC’s next-gen VR headset. From the images so far, it seems the headset will have a tethered connection to a tube-shaped device to power up the advanced processing of the gadget. There are no straps apparent in these leaked images which suggests HTC has finally found a way to ditch the strap design. How they have managed to balance the weight out will only be clear once the headset is out there for real. Also, the images are highly suggestive of a snap-on face cushion for comfort, adjustable lenses, immersive spatial audio, and an active cooling system.

How helpful is this feature, that is something we will know only once we actually try it but it does sound good in theory!

Once activated, EVE launches a 10-second alarm meant to discourage the attacker from continuing their assault and instantly calls the local police station, sending operators the location and live audio recordings of the attack. EVE follows a two-step activation process to launch the wristband’s emergency features. First, to unlock EVE and prepare it for activation, the user simply shakes their wrist repeatedly three to five times. Embedded inside the wristband, an accelerometer and gyroscope detect the shaking and rotation of the wrist, awakening the device and gearing it up for activation. Then, either by announcing previously recorded voice triggers or by placing pressure on the wristband’s sensors, the 110dB alarm sounds, and the police are called, sending live recordings of the assault to an emergency operator, along with the GPS location of the EVE user.
