CBS Super Bowl ‘second screen’ stream to include alternate cameras, DVR functionality

CBS Super Bowl 'second screen' stream to include alternate camera angles, DVR functionality and commercials, of course

With the heavy responsibility of handling the Super Bowl XLVII livestream, CBS is focusing in on what football fans really want: commercials. Well, that, and real-time statistic updates, game highlights, alternate camera angles and a star studded musical performance by Beyoncé, of course. The network's taking its duties seriously, and seems to be pulling out all the stops to create a robust second screen experience on CBSSports.com. Viewers will be able to access a pop-up video console from laptops, desktops and tablets to choose between four cameras, pause coverage or check customized Twitter feed culled from the CBS' top sports experts. Deep social integration is promised -- particularly when it comes to the game's infamously expensive commercials -- allowing fans to instantly share their famous moments. After all, if you're going to stream the Super Bowl, you may as well do it right. Read on for the official press release, including specific details on what those four extra cameras will be looking at.

NFL announces Super Bowl XLVII will be streamed live by CBS

NFL announces Super Bowl XLVII will be streamed live by CBS

Last year, the National Football League took a massive step forward when it announced it would be live streaming the biggest game of the year for the first time ever -- at least officially. Said move was mostly deemed a pretty good success, to say the least, with the sporting event netting around 2.1 million unique viewers back then -- as such, it shouldn't come as a surprise that the NFL's looking to come back for round two on February 3rd. Earlier today, Roger Goodell & Co. announced the upcoming Super Bowl XLVII is set to follow suit and be streamed on the interwebs as well, however this year's streaming duties will be handled by CBS instead of NBC -- and the NFL's own website, of course. Additionally, Verizon subscribers can get it on the action straight from their smartphone via the the NFL Mobile application, just as they were able to during the Giants vs. Patriots face-off. We still have some time until the next iteration of the Big Game, so here's to hoping your favorite team shows up in New Orleans and makes the entire experience that much better for you.

CBS and Hulu make content deal, stream back catalog shows starting in January 2013

CSI Miami and David Caruso

CBS has been the lone Hulu refusenik among the biggest US broadcasters -- even with rumors of licensing discussions underway at least two years ago, we've usually had to visit the network's own site if we wanted a CSI fix without paying by the show. The deadlock is over at last now that CBS and Hulu have struck a deal. The agreement isn't quite what we'd hope for, focusing almost exclusively on back catalog titles like Medium and Star Trek, although celebrity gossip junkies will like knowing that Entertaintment Tonight segments will be viewable the day they air on regular TV. We'll have to wait until January 2013 for the selection to be ready -- not to mention shell out for Hulu Plus to get full access -- but there's at least an end in sight to one of the longer content droughts in streaming video.

Screen Grabs: Microsoft Surface goes to work on NCIS: LA

Screen Grabs chronicles the uses (and misuses) of real-world gadgets in today's movies and TV. Send in your sightings (with screen grab!) to screengrabs at engadget dot com.

Screen Grabs Microsoft Surface goes to work on NCIS LA

Just in case its dance moves weren't enough to move buyers, Microsoft's new slate is popping up in TV shows themselves, like tonight's episode of NCIS: LA. As seen in the clip, character Eric Beale confidently flips his Windows RT-powered Surface out (and naturally, makes use of its kickstand and Touch Cover -- gotta hit all the check boxes) to figure out what's going on and even multitasks with some simulated videoconferencing. All in all it's more realistic than when the other Microsoft Surface made a cameo in CSI: Miami (also included after the break), and is probably worth the promo fee by showing a use case enabled thanks to those features -- of course, with no cell access built-in, it's not immediately clear how he got online, but this is TV. So who did it better, tablet-style: this one, the PlayBook on White Collar, Cisco's ill-fated Cius on NCIS: LA last year or the iPad in Entourage?

[Thanks, Mitchell]

Screen Grabs: Elementary pilot has Sherlock Holmes using murder victim’s Lumia 800

Screen Grabs Elementary pilot has Sherlock Holmes using murder victim's Lumia 800

Whether you're a fan of CBS's Elementary spin on Sherlock Holmes or not, it sure gave a nice amount screen-time to cellphones in its pilot. While there was prominent use of iPhones in the episode, we're highlighting a seemingly forced Nokia Lumia 800 cameo -- you'd think it would at least be the 900 being an American series. The camera takes a tight shot of Sherlock swiping through photos on a murder victim's black Lumia twice, highlighting the Nokia logo and Windows Phone 7.5 gallery interface. Here's your clue to see it for yourself: check around the 8-minute mark at the source link below.

Microsoft hires former CBS executive to produce original video content for Xbox

Microsoft reportedly hires former CBS executive to produce original video content for Xbox

Earlier today, rumors started circulating around the web about Microsoft having hired a former CBS executive to oversee the creation of original video content for the company's famed console. It didn't take long for the whispers to turn into something more concrete, however, as Redmond has now made it official, announcing that Nancy Tellem will be the outfit's Entertainment and Digital Media president. According to Microsoft, Tellem's set to take over a new production studio in Los Angeles, California -- one that's going to be in charge of developing "interactive and linear content for Xbox and other devices." Certainly this could be seen as a smart move from Microsoft in its quest to take over the living room reigns, which would make perfect sense given the Xbox's obvious transition from a simple gaming console to an all-around media hub. You'll find all the official details inside the presser below.
