KFC UK apparently loves their gravy. They love it so much that they want your room will be filled with the smell of their signature gravy. Seems kind of weird to me without any mashed potatoes. Even if you love the gravy, do you really want the lingering smell of gravy in your home? Well, if you do, check this out.

You may constantly need to explain yourself to your parents or conservative family members when they first take a look at the Sony LSPX-S2 Glass Sound Speaker, because trust me, it looks uncannily similar to something you’d find in a college-going teenager’s room.

Mary Jane reference aside, this product, weird as it may look, is classic Sony. Sony as a company is famed for creating products that are state of the art, but also weird (Verge has chronicled most of them down)… and the LSPX-S2 or the Glass Sound Speaker is the latest entry into that category. Designed to look like a candle stand (I believe that was the original intent), the Glass Sound Speaker was made to serve as an all-round piece of audiovisual entertainment as it packs a light into it too. Made to sit on tabletops or bedstands, and to serenade one with music while cozy in bed or while preparing a meal or having a romantic dinner, the light within flickers with the intensity of a candle flame, but what’s more interesting is the audio setup that sits underneath.

The speaker, right below the glass tube, comprises a 35 mm mid-range driver and a passive radiator to deliver the mids and the low-ends. However, for the higher frequencies, the speaker relies ON the glass tube. “The organic glass body itself vibrates after being tapped by the actuator under it to spread the sound vertically in a 360-degree direction. The organic glass tube tweeter has a wider surface (compared to conventional speakers) to create crystal clear sound with minimal loss of volume.”, says Sony. Innovative, for sure, but I still can’t shake off the overall shape that Sony decided to go with… and priced at $700 that’s a mighty expensive water-pipe looking piece of tech right there.

Modern-day’s Answer to the Candle Stick

The gentle glow of a candle is an atmosphere creating and welcoming light source, that can be difficult to accurately replicate digitally. However, the team at Nottdesign have captured its warmth through an emotion-evoking user experience.

The Ether Light consists of nine 5W lights that replicate the candles, and a simplistic, circular base that stands in position of the candlestick. By adding and removing the ‘candles’, the intensity of the light can be subtly adjusted in the most candle-like manner. The lights are fed power through induction; this, combined with the illumination being controlled by adding and removing the candles, means that there is a complete absence of any buttons, enhancing the experience.

This is certainly a light that holds the power to be able to elegantly create a beautiful ambiance within a room, while simultaneously being a product that calls for interaction from the user.

The Lumos Candle Lights Itself: Laziness Level MAX

A candle that lights itself sounds like magic. It also sounds like humans are lazier than ever. We can’t even be bothered to light our own candles anymore with a match or a lighter. We suck at life, and this is proof.

The Lumos Candle will automatically light its own wick for you with the push of a button – total overkill for a problem nobody needs solved. These replaceable Lumos candles are made from soy wax infused with scented oils like vanilla, lavender, and more. They use a wooden wick instead of cotton, and it looks like they ignite and burn like any other scented candle.

You just have to put the candle on a special base, and push a button to ignite each candle with a real flame. Like regular candles, each one burns for about 40 hours before you need to replace it. The base is rechargeable and only needs to be topped off with a USB cable about every four months if you use it a lot. It will cost you $58 for the Lumos starter pack over on Indiegogo, and that includes two candles and a starter base.

If you ask me, this proves that humanity is doomed. How hard is it to light a match? Also, there’s a certain joy in little things like lighting candles. That joy has just been blown out like a candle flame.

Global warming has a strange way of working. While theoretically it means the earth’s average surface temperature is increasing, there are some places that are seeing a decrease in temperatures. In short, homes will now be forced to have either an air conditioner or a heater in them.

The Egloo has an incredibly pleasant, effective, and ingenious way of battling low temperatures. It uses regular tea light candles to generate heat that’s powerful enough to raise the temperature of a large room by 2-3° in just half an hour. Made out of terracotta, this nifty device has two domes that trap the candle heat between them, releasing it through a small orifice on the top. No electricity, no batteries, just a bunch of tea-light candles that cost 10 cents a day to make your room pleasantly toasty!

Egloo manages to do something rather marvelous. It replaces an expensive appliance that wastes electricity with an alternative that is easy to use and is made from natural materials. Terracotta as a material is nothing short of a wonderful choice for the Egloo. It has the ability to absorb and dissipate not just heat but even cold (for centuries, Indian households relied on terracotta pots to keep their drinking water colder than room temperature). With the Egloo, all you need is a couple of candles and the terracotta does the rest of the magic. In fact, it continues heating your room long after the candles have burnt out! (Psst… you can swap regular candles for scented ones to set the temperature as well as the mood!)

Egloo’s design gets full marks too. Its shape while designed for efficiency, is cute and looks good both indoors and outdoors. The terracotta looks great in its naked color but is also available in colored matte, glazed as well as ripple textured variants. Made entirely out of clay with just a single metal grid, the Egloo comes at an incredibly reasonable price and if maintained, can last forever!
