Navy to use "smart" fabrics to save soldiers lives

Gaurav Thakur:

Army has been looking to futurize its soldiers uniforms from a long time. It intended to develop “smart” suits for its personnel that would have wires embedded in the cloth and gel sensors to transmit vital signs of the soldier. Unfortunately ,that project couldn’t see the daylight but it seems as if it is to give the idea a fresh start with the advancements in sensor technology. Defense Threat Reduction Agency (DTRA) has released a new set of proposals to help army combat weapons of mass destruction and development of intelligent clothing to aid wounded soldiers is one such proposal.

Army wants sensors to be integrated into uniforms that can detect the locations of bullet or exposure to CBRNE (Chemical Biological Radiological Nuclear and Explosive) agents. The medical personnel will be informed about the vital statistics of the soldier, who is further located with the help GPS integrated to the fabric. In case the soldier is hit by a bullet or a shrapnel it is the first few hours that are critical and he needs attention of a doctor as soon as possible.

Such suits will help the medical personnel assess the condition of the soldier and accordingly take an action. In case the soldier is exposed to CBRNE agent the uniform should be equipped with bio-sensors to successfully identify the agent by analyzing the blood, saliva, urine, or sweat of the soldier. Integrating a wide array of sensors into the uniform and still keeping it lightweight and durable would be a challenging task though.

Abdul Vahid V:

Austrian skydiver Felix Baumgartner is all prepared with a high-tech spacesuit to jump from a height of 120,000 feet in the air. Later this year, Baumgartner plans to jump from a helium-filled capsule that will suspend 23 miles above Roswell, New Mexico. While driving down to the earth, the skydiver has to defend a temperature as low as –70°F and a speed over 700 miles per hour. If the adventurous skydiver survives the situations well, it might be a huge achievement for him, his sponsor Red Bull and the superior spacesuit.

Astrolabe concept: Leaving behind ever-lasting memories

Nikonian Bar:

At the intersection of a location and a time period, we find an incident. This is the working principle of an astronomical instrument called the astrolabe. And this also is the inspiration behind the concept of an apparatus for memory. This concept seeks to trigger memories at the intersection point of people and incidents. And it does this via recorded, closed circuit TV camera footage. The intention behind such a concept is to arrive with a way of reconstructing memories in a manner that can be stored indefinitely and passed on to the next generation.

Dangerous obsessions: Crossbow that will shoot out spinning saw blades

B.Sameer Kumar:

We like those cool and crazy toys as much as the guy next cubicle, but this one is not something you would want to be on the wrong end of. A crossbow is bad enough, but this merges the precision of the crossbow and its range along with the razor sharp cutting ability of a saw blade to pretty much make a weapon that could slice off things clean at a range of five meters. Designed by Patrick Priebe, the saw blades that come flying off of the Blade Driver might just be 2-inches in diameter, but it still makes for one cool machine.

The University of Washington is finding it hard to manage waste, on realizing that a huge part of its garbage is compostable, the University has gone on to implement a pilot project to collect degradable waste separately. As part of this, it has established a set of high-tech waste kiosks at the campus’ Red Square. Besides three bins for different types of waste, the kiosks feature solar power and advanced sensors to inform the authority when they need emptying.

Paint spraying robot car creates an awesome street art

Dushyant Sood:

A reputed street artist Jeff Soto exhibited fine street graffiti skills by mounting a paint-spraying robot on a Chevy Sonic, in collaboration with Chevrolet. The aim was to paint an entire graffiti on a brick wall. The car (Chevy Sonic) was entirely fitted with robotic arms which made the art possible.

The car required to make this artwork is modified to 1.4L turbocharged engine and 6-speed manual transmission. Typical spray paint cans are also used by Jeff Soto to customize the wall paint. Three robotic arms packed with spray colors and paint balls are installed in the car which comes out of the right door, roof and the hood respectively. According to Jeff, the art installation cannot be performed without the robotic car. Only the robots can be this accurate and also it’s cool to spray with a robot.

This is Sonic’s first Street Art and the first to collaborate Chevrolet with a great street artist, Jeff Soto.

Designer creates a baby stroller with an adroit futuristic essence

Dattatreya Mandal:

Previously, we have nonchalantly harped about advanced mobile devices, and we have gleefully reiterated about quirky gadgets. But, then why should only grown ups have all the fun? Well, some of our modern day designers certainly feel that way, and a few among them have even gone out of their way to rectify this kid ‘discrimination issue’. And, thus we have the ‘Electra 225′, a bantam baby stroller bedecked with an utterly futuristic composition.
