The Birth of Venus: Princess Leia Edition

I don’t know much about art, but I know what I like. And I like artist Travis Chapman’s take on Botticelli’s Birth of Venus painting featuring Princess Leia in her slave outfit. This original acrylic painting would look great in your man cave or geek themed room.

It is said that the original painting depicts the goddess Venus emerging from the sea as an adult woman. Does this mean that after her enslavement by Jabba, Leia is emerging more confident than ever?

I have no idea what it means, I just know it’s pretty awesome that Leia has replaced the goddess and that Han, Chewie and 3-PO are here to provide support. This classic work of art just got much better in my opinion.

Electropollock Robot Uses Music to Paint

Dmitry Morozov created Electropollock, a modern-day homage to American expressionist painter Jackson Pollock, famous for his drippy, abstract paintings. Morozov’s robot uses a similar method to get paint onto the rolling canvas, but the finished work is determined by music fed into the system. It makes for some weird and interesting art.

The Electropollock is built around an old printer mechanism that has been outfitted with solenoid valves and electric motors. There’s also an Arduino Uno board that runs a special algorithm that registers peaks in sound frequency and amplitude and then translates them into brush strokes and controls the speed of the paper as it moves through the machine and the rate that the paint is applied.

Paint is fed into a drip nozzle attached to a moving “print head” and a speaker rises from the back of the unit. Each painting is unique, and a vague visual representation of the music that was playing.

Kingspray Graffiti Simulator: VRanksy

Kingspray is an upcoming game made to be played with the HTC Vive that will let you be a graffiti artist with all the conveniences of digital art and minus the law-breaking part.

The game is still in development, but as you’ll see in the trailer below it’s already very promising even in its current state. With just a few clicks, you’ll be able to pick from thousands of colors and save a palette for the current session, as well as undo your doodles or start from scratch. The game’s input sensitivity also appears to be on point. Equally important are Kingspray‘s realistic locations and textures, such as walls, trailers and train cars. The game also lets you take and share photos of your creation, as well as listen to streaming radio while you’re painting.

Kotaku says the game will be released on Steam “soon” for both Windows and OS X. Here are a few sample Kingspray graffiti:

One Brush to Rule Them All

only_01

The ONLY paintbrush is so named because it aims to be the one and last paintbrush you need! Anyone who’s done a DIY paint project can attest to the fact that normal brushes are often ruined after one use. When they dry up, the bristles are mangled and ruined, forcing the user to wastefully throw out the brush and purchase a new one for round 2. ONLY features a silicone base that can be stretched after user, allowing the area between bristles where paint builds up to be deep cleaned. It also includes a handy cap that can cover and protect the brush until the next time it’s needed.

Guy Paints Awesome Mario Themed Room for a Friend

This room was made by a guy named Matt, who is a real life Mario Maker. He created it as a gift to a friend, which begs the question: Why don’t I have friends like Matt? Hey, friends. Be more like Matt!

Matt is a hard working guy like the rest of us. He made this room using paints and pencils, as a favor/thank you for a friend. He actually created this a few years ago, but imgur user ThePunNun just met Matt, so he thought he deserved some recognition.

He did a great job with this art. Matt also does tattoo art, short films, and other creative stuff, and is an all around awesome guy.

Check Out These Insanely Realistic Embroidered Portraits

Artist Cayce Zavaglia creates these embroidered portraits using thread. Her work is seriously impressive. Really makes you think, right? Mainly stuff like “How am I so untalented?” and “Why can’t I do embroidery without making all of my fingers bleed?” and so on and so forth.
