Ever wished you too could make use of the awesome powers that lie within Dr. Matt Smith's Mark VII Sonic Screwdriver? Well, it's still not exactly a reality in the way of the space-bred handyman's gadget seen on Doctor Who, but ThinkGeek and The Wand Company have you covered if an IR-packing replica universal remote sounds good enough. This BBC-licensed Mark VII remote handles up to 39 commands that are all controlled using 13 different motion gestures. Of course, if controlling the likes of TV and AV devices in an extraterrestrial fashion just isn't your thing, there's always ThinkGeek's Sonic Screwdriver flashlight, right? There's no word on price just yet, but San Diego Comic-Con attendees can try it out first-hand at the BBC America Booth (#3629) starting July 12. The Mark VII remote is set to go sale for $99 at ThinkGeek's website on August 31st, so for now we'll direct you to the press release after the break.

Sonic Screwdriver Bouquet: Do You Take This Doctor?

Suppose the Doctor and River Song got married. This would be River’s bouquet, because you know, that’s her sonic screwdriver as the stem. But in real life this was a human bride’s bouquet that not only features River’s sonic screwdriver, but there are also paper flowers from the pages of a Sherlock Holmes story on top. That makes it doubly awesome.

Doctor Who fans with impending nuptials now have another project to keep them busy until the big day. You already have the TARDIS or Dalek cake, no doubt. The groom will be dressed like the Doctor, the bride like River Song and now you have a sonic screwdriver bouquet.

But don’t stop there. I want to see some Daleks walking her down the aisle and a Cyberman presenting the ring. Nah, that’s not too much.

Scientists Building Doctor Who’s Sonic Screwdriver

Dundee University researchers have created Doctor Who’s sonic screwdriver. Or at least a rough version. The machine can use ultrasound to lift and rotate a rubber disc floating in a cylinder of water. This is important because it is the first time ultrasound waves have been used to turn objects instead of pushing them. It means that we are one step closer to a real life Sonic Screwdriver.

The study could make surgery using ultrasound techniques more precise, but more importantly, one day it might go in your pocket and help you escape a horde of Daleks. It might also help get you a cute sidekick.

The scientists used energy from an ultrasound array to form a beam. This beam can carry momentum to push away an object in its path and, by using a beam shaped like a helix or vortex, cause the object to rotate. Hence, “unscrewing”. Next I hope they work on some psychic paper.
