This backpack has its own surveillance camera, tracking device, and solar panel

The Seeon 180° backpack is easily the most advanced bag I’ve ever seen… and I’ve been writing about innovative bags for 6 years now. The fact that it carries your luggage from point A to point B is an incredibly small part of what the Seeon 180° backpack does, but an incredibly important one too. You could be a businessman carrying important documents, a woman with her valuables, or just someone unluckily venturing through a shady neighborhood. Seeon 180° has its own surveillance system to keep an eye on people approaching you from behind, a motion sensor that can detect objects or people moving towards you, an alarm system that activates in emergency situations during altercations, assaults, or muggings, and a GPS tracking device that can send your location (or your bag’s location) to an emergency contact list in case of an emergency. The bag even has solar panels and a built-in power bank to allow these features to operate, as well as to charge your gadgets… and if that wasn’t enough, the bag has its own light-strip that automatically illuminates in the dark, allowing cyclists and other pedestrians spot and avoid you while you’re walking on the pavement or crossing roads.

I often find myself referring to Seeon 180° as ‘more than a backpack’, and I keep checking myself when I say so… because truth be told, it isn’t really a backpack to begin with. It’s a secure safe you can wear on your back. Designed for a modern age where protecting yourself and your belongings should really be at the forefront, Seeon 180° uses technology to create a secure, portable storage solution. It merely looks like a backpack, but it’s too advanced to really put it in the same category as your simplistic canvas or leather bag.

Perhaps Seeon 180°’s most intriguing and defining feature is its 1080p surveillance camera built into the bag’s back. Engineered to be your third eye as you walk forward, Seeon 180° keeps a lookout for you by constantly scanning what’s happening behind you. It comes coupled with a motion sensor that can even gauge the speed of objects approaching you, letting you be aware of what’s happening behind you so you don’t have to constantly look back to make sure you’re safe. The camera sits discreetly within the bag, is virtually impossible to notice, and sends alerts to your phone. This portable surveillance system is powered by an ARM computer built right into Seeon 180°. Along with being able to ‘see’ what’s behind you, Seeon 180° can sense its own location too.

The backpack (and I use that term out of convenience here) even comes with its own GPS that actively tracks the bag and wearer’s location, serving two broad purposes. In the event of an altercation, the bag can send an SOS alert to an emergency contact, or if the bag gets stolen, it can be tracked in real-time. Among other features, the bag comes with its own ‘taillight’ too, which self-illuminates in the dark. Designed to make it easy to spot at night (so cars, bikes, and pedestrians can avoid you), the LEDs can be controlled via your smartphone too, allowing you to switch them on or off depending on your need.

All of Seeon 180°’s features draw power from its built-in 20,000 mAh power bank, which you can also use to charge your own devices too. The power bank is supplemented by a series of solar panels on the back of Seeon 180°, which means you don’t really need to recharge the backpack too often! A wireless module enables Seeon 180° to connect to your smartphone, and Seeon 180°’s app lets you create custom alerts based on emergencies like assault, theft, or collision. Even if you aren’t staring at your phone’s screen, the backpack’s discreet alarm system can send you vibrations when it senses danger, prompting you to look back and evaluate the situation. In the event that the situation gets out of hand or your bag gets stolen, you can share the bag’s location from within the app too, making it easier to track your backpack as well as your stuff.

Those features, however, tend to distract from Seeon 180°’s most fundamental job of being able to carry your belongings! The Seeon 180° backpack (can we just call it a backsafe?) has a main compartment that’s large enough to securely store your laptop and tablet and some more, while pockets on both the inside as well as outside give you ample organized storage for all your belongings. For a backpack that’s as advanced as Seeon 180°, it’s incredibly stylish too. The entire exterior is crafted from high-quality calfskin leather, with hammered straps, padded back-panel, and even waterproof zippers. One could say that’s kind of to its detriment, because the bag’s stylish appeal may actually attract people instead of let you stealthily move around without anyone noticing or following you! I’m kidding, obviously… Seeon 180° actually ushers in a rather new era for bags, where being able to stay safe and track your belongings are of paramount importance. Having launched just a month after Apple announced its AirTags that let you track your keys, wallet, and belongings, the Seeon 180° backpack definitely seems to have its finger on the pulse. And like one of the backers on the Kickstarter page rather perfectly said, “It’s only missing a katana”…

This backpack is designed for stylish millennials who want to add a pop of colour to office outfit!

It’s no secret that today’s younger generations look at work differently. Just because ‘adulting’ was once equated with a 9-5 office job, it doesn’t mean it still is or that we ever have to lose our own sense of style while working one. Today’s younger generations are geared towards more casual, remote working anyway, workplaces have implemented more transparent and inclusive business models, and employers are steadily recognizing the value in each of their employee’s unique personalities and perspectives. Named after the German word for “young,” the Jung Business Backpack designed by Nicole Nassif was created for the young (or old) professional who wants to show off their personal style inside and outside of the office.

Nassif set out to build a backpack that’s conventional in function, yet unconventional in appearance. The Jung Business Backpack takes care of all the practical needs as your standard business bag. Inside, a padded laptop sleeve protects your personal computer from any potential damage following a fall or drop. Then, an outer sleeve wraps over the backpack’s main zipper, offering an extra buffer against any potential damage and a place to tie any items or carabiners to the outside of your backpack. Nassif stitched accessory pockets to the exterior of the Jung Business Backpack, providing spaces for you to keep your smartphone, stationery, and car keys. Each leather pocket is also given a primary color, answering Nassif’s whimsical blueprint. Plastic bubbles were also sewn into Jung’s outer sleeve to provide an added layer of protection against the elements and theft, keeping your accessories safe inside their bubbles.

Maintaining the backpack’s traditional silhouette, Nassif gave the Jung Business Backpack a rectangular shape, rounding its corners to give it a less rigid form and echo its young personality. Combining playful colors with heavy-duty materials and an overall minimalist personality, Nassif built the Jung Business Backpack to remind us all that work doesn’t have to be so serious all the time.

Designer: Nicole Nassif

Nicole Nassif set out to design a backpack that’s conventional in function and unconventional in appearance.

Nassif’s final prototype envisions plastic bubbles to cover leather accessory pockets.

Named after the German word for “young,” Jung Backpack is whimsical in appearance but gets the job done in the office.

Accessory pockets line the outside of Jung, while a padded laptop pocket fills up a quarter of its interior space. The backpack’s outer sleeve wraps around Jung’s exterior with plastic buckles that leave room to tie any items or carabiners.

Nassif aimed to create a minimalist backpack, adding whimsical accents like primary color pockets.

This hip-bag can seamlessly expand into a full-size backpack in under 10 seconds

It’s safe to say that the DUPLEX bags bring a rather new definition to the term ‘expansion packs’! With their unique shape-shifting design, DUPLEX’s bags can go from compact to spacious in roughly 5 seconds, covering a wide variety of use-cases. Maybe on some days you need a tiny shoulder-sling, on other days you need a backpack, and on some special days, you could use a duffle bag. Well, DUPLEX’s design was made to cover just that, with the way it’s built. The bags are designed in a way that they tuck into themselves, transforming into a new type of bag altogether. This essentially means you’ve got two types of bags in one single design, and that no matter what your needs are, the DUPLEX’s versatile build has you covered.

The DUPLEX series of bags come in two variants that transform into a total of four bags. You’ve got the DUPLEX ASCENT, which goes from a hip bag (or a fanny pack) into a full-size backpack, and the DUPLEX ROAM, which starts off as a compact cross-body bag but can expand up to 4 times in size into a large duffle bag for all your belongings. Designed for the spontaneous, versatile, and active traveler, the bags accommodate everything from the specifics for certain activities, to broad categories of luggage for longer trips. Even though both the bags are designed on the same philosophy of expansion, they’re suited to different traveler niches. The DUPLEX ASCENT starts off as a hip bag that’s perfect for EDC and regular commutes. Spacious enough for most of your essentials, the pack can be worn around the waist, slung on a shoulder, or strapped across for comfort. It comes with 5L of storage and has both internal as well as external compartments, along with an adjustable belt. One of those compartments conceals the ASCENT’s fold-out backpack, which when opened, takes its overall storage to a whopping 23.5L. The backpack is large enough to store your 13″ laptop among other belongings, and comes with all the trims and accessories, including two water-bottle pockets, multiple zippered compartments, adjustable shoulder-straps, breathable padded mesh, and a nice loop to hang your sunglasses.

The DUPLEX ROAM, on the other hand, is purpose-built for travel, working out, and training or playing on the court or at the field. In its small avatar, it exists as a nifty cross-body bag with 3L of storage that’s perfect for your sunglasses, headphones, and other EDC. However, a singular zipper helps the bag expand 5x into a duffle with 15L of storage. While the cross-body bag comes with a single adjustable shoulder-strap, the duffle sports a strap along with two easy-to-carry handles. Perfect for the gym or the courts, the duffle has multiple compartments on the side as well as a large compartment in the center for your gear, shoes, etc. A four-way stretchable mesh pocket is perfect for airing out any clothes you may have worn, and the bag even sports a pass-through handle to secure it to a travel case just in case you’re hitting the roads.

The secret sauce of both the DUPLEX ASCENT and ROAM lies in two things, the way they’re constructed, and the materials they use. Their ingenious foldable/flexible designs are definitely what make them such clever backpack designs, but that ingenuity is championed by their use of incredibly flexible and lightweight materials, notably the black 200D ripstop nylon outer clad, and the bright, high-visibility 68D ripstop nylon interiors. The benefit of the nylon fabric, aside from its flexibility and light weight, is also in its sheer durability and its water-resistant nature. The bags also come with bright orange interiors, making finding your gear easy in low-light settings, 3D warp-knit geometric meshes for breathability, adjustable padded straps for comfort, and two-way zippers with silicone zipper pulls.

The shapeshifting bags come from the clever folks at Afar & Away, a Portland-based outdoor brand aiming to make bags as versatile as the people carrying them. By existing in one of two avatars, DUPLEX’s bags have something for everyone, and if you ever feel like you’re running out of space, the bags expand nearly 5-fold to give you all the organized storage you ever wanted. The DUPLEX ASCENT is available at a Kickstarter early-bird price of $60, while the smaller DUPLEX ROAM is early-bird priced at just $40. The campaign ends in less than a week, so you may want to go ahead and ‘bag’ this while you can!

This entire backpack is a high-visibility reflective panel!

What if your backpack did more than just protect your belongings? What if it protected YOU too? Roughly a thousand cyclists die each year in the USA alone due to accidents, and nearly 70% of those accidents are due to reduced visibility at night… a statistic that the LetMeLight backpack is hoping to change by increasing visibility and saving lives.

Unlike most backpacks which either come with a small reflective patch or nothing at all, the LetMeLight is designed to be completely retro-reflective. Under low-light conditions, the entire backpack begins glowing, increasing the chances of it being noticed by cars or bikes driving behind you. The bag features a robust Cordura construction, which makes it rugged, tear-proof, and water-resistant, although its innovation lies in the proprietary retro-reflective coating that each backpack receives. This coating is applied to the entire backpack, and looks completely transparent during the day. However, dim the lights and the LetMeLight quite literally shines through, with a bright consistent shimmer that’s up to 13 times brighter than off-the-shelf reflective panels and stickers. Call it peacocking (the act of fashionably standing out) or just a safety feature, this revolutionary fabric + coating, codenamed Fusiontex, is what sets the LetMeLight backpack apart from the rest.

Its most stand-out feature aside, the LetMeLight was designed to efficiently store and protect your belongings too! It comes in two variants, a sling bag that’s perfect for carrying smaller items like notebooks, clothes and other EDC, and a standard-sized backpack that has a dedicated sleeve to fit a 13-inch laptop, tablet, and much more. The backpack and sling bag both sport extra quick-access pockets for storing belongings, secured by tough, durable nylon zippers, and comfortable nylon-mesh padding on the back as well as the straps.

The LetMeLight’s patented retro-reflective coating technology can withstand water as well as regular wear-and-tear, ensuring your backpack remains entirely reflective even after years of use. In fact, the coating is so versatile, it can even be applied to clothes, shoes, vehicles too! The coating remains transparent during the day, which gives you the option of playing with colored fabrics (unlike those boring grey reflective panels), and at night, it shines bright, allowing you to be seen and be safe!

LetMeLight: Retro-Reflective Backpack for Style & Safety

Created entirely from retro-reflective fabric, the LetMeLight is a backpack built to reflect light even in the darkest times.

The backpack appear as regular backpacks during the day, but they transform and illuminate its reflection during night.

Unlike many reflective backpacks that have a tape or film sewed on, the whole backpack is reflective–approximately 13 times more reflective.

The high visibility ensures safety for riders, delivery drivers, and anyone who could be difficult to see in the dark.

The retro-reflective has premium air permeability for comfort, something that normal reflective tape does not have.

What is Retro-reflection

Retro-reflection is the reflection that reflects light back to its source with a minimum of scattering. By using a special printing technology, INNO10 was able to coat the glass beads directly on top of the fabric and film to create retro-reflectivity. Unlike most other reflective fabrics, INNO10’s unique printing technology coats the glass beads directly on top of the fabric–something that no other company can do. Thanks to this technology, INNO10’s retro-reflective fabric is highly breathable and can be used in apparel products as well.

The mirrored side of the countless glass beads inserted into the fiber tissue reflects it directly as a light source.

Reflective Vs Retro-reflective

Most reflective fabric uses a reflective tape (3M) or film and it is applied to the garment or backpack. During the day, the tape can be visibly seen, and it can be visually unappealing.

On the other hand, retro-reflective fabric by INNO10 can function as a completely normal appearing during the day, then transform into a highly reflective at night. Their retro-reflective fabric can also be produced in many different colors and still exhibit the same level of retro reflection.

Reflective vs. Retro-Reflective Direct Comparison

LetMeLight Features

You can fit up to a 13 inch laptop and seal it shut with the velcro seal to ensure maximum protection.

Extra pockets in each area of the backpack to ensure the most optimal space for the wearers.

Created with Cordura Fabric

LetMeLight was created with the highest quality Cordura fabric. They are the world’s first and only backpack to use Cordura fabric and make it retro-reflective.

Benefits of Cordura Fabric:

– Ten times more durable than cotton fabric
– Three times more durable than polyester fabric
– Two times more durable than nylon fabric
– Cordura fabric is 25% lighter than polyester fabric
– Cordura fabric is water-resistant and does not change colors
– Cordura is a synthetic material, so it’s built to last with its high tensile strength fibers and will withstand long term wear

LetMeLight Sling Bag

LetMeLight sling bag will carry all the same technology – just in a miniature version!

This NASA Flight Suit Backpack Is out of this World

This officially-licensed backpack is inspired by the design of NASA astronauts’ classic orange flight suits, complete with mission patches. You’ll look like a member of the flight crew walking around with one of these – especially if you wear it with a helmet and some moon boots. Heck, why not go for the complete spacesuit?

It’s guaranteed not to provide an oxygen supply in the event of a spacewalk. Still, it does have room for a 15-inch laptop inside, as well as multiple exterior pockets and a roll-top for maximum packing efficiency. In addition to its classic NASA logo patch, it’s got embroidered patches from the Space Shuttle, Apollo/Soyuz, ISS missions, and a US flag too.

The backpacks are currently sold out at Fun.com, but you can find them at Otaku’s Shop for $69.99. If you’re looking for something less showy than orange, Bioworld also makes a blue and grey NASA backpack.

These customizable backpack grid organizers are every stationery lover’s best travel partners

We all have our own personal checklists while stuffing our backpacks before leaving the house. I know I can’t leave without the paperback I’m currently reading, my writing pad, wallet, point-and-shoot, hand sanitizer, chapstick, keys, cell phone. And that’s just for my walk to the grocery store. I mostly rely on those free tote bags you get with magazine subscriptions – they get the job done, but by the time I get home, digging for my keys buried underneath everything else gets tiring. Fritsch-Durisotti, a creative studio based in Paris, launched their line of backpacks and companion organizers, Fil & Fog so that we can bring our own “little universe of personal items” with us anywhere we go, leaving the hassles of clutter and disorganization at home.

The designers behind Fil & Fog set out to construct a backpack built to last and accompanying organizers that can keep up with our passions, no matter where they might take us. For Fritsch-Durisotti’s Fil & Fog, passion is found in its construction. TPU coating is applied to every backpack and organizer, which enhances both products’ impermeability factors and also allows room for untraditional, but effective textile assembly methods. High-frequency welding, for instance, a plastic welding process that relies on high-frequency electric fields, gives Fil & Fog’s backpack and organizers their high resistance threshold and water-tightness. Elastic bands come with each organizer so that they are completely customizable for each user’s needs – just weave the elastic bands through the laser-cut grids found inside each organizer and store all your items.

Once every organizer is finalized, they easily slip into a Fil & Fog backpack’s bottom compartment, which has enough room to store multiple different sized organizers at once. The backpack itself is manufactured using polyester for the bag’s fabric and recycled nylon for its lining, giving the backpack an entirely waterproof edge. An expandable top compartment can also be joined with the backpack’s lower compartment, giving the backpack an overall, generous volume of 24 liters. Like a Russian doll, the backpack holds so much more than meets the eye. Whether you’re gearing up for that solo camping trip you’ve been looking forward to all quarantine or just hitting up a local beach to spend the day, Fil & Fog is designed to make the act of carrying our passions feel a lot lighter – “Fil & Fog offers agile solutions to organize, pack, and carry the stuff we need and the stuff we love. A timeless companion that invites us to go back to what is important to us.”

How Kickstarter provided the perfect launchpad for this innovative modern-day travel backpack

Small companies innovate, large companies acquire. That’s just a fundamental fact when it comes to any industry with big players. Zuckerberg’s only bit of innovation was Facebook. Every single Facebook company we see today – Instagram, Whatsapp, Oculus, etc, was a strategic acquisition. One could say the same with Google. Apart from search, almost every Google product existed independently before it was absorbed by the company. Small companies think big… Large companies just look at the bigger picture.

Innovation practically runs in the blood of Tropicfeel, a 26-person design company based out of Barcelona. Responsible for creating the world’s most funded shoe in 2018, and the second most funded shoe in 2019, Tropicfeel has more than proved that they’ve got the spirit to innovate, as a small, creative, sustainability-driven, and consumer-focused brand. After shipping more than 500,000 shoes to over 142 countries (that’s 75% of the world) in the past couple of years, Tropicfeel decided to shift their gaze to yet another product in the travel-domain that needed their Midas-touch… the modern travel backpack.

The truth is that the Shell backpack couldn’t possibly come from a larger company. The Kickstarter platform and a brand ethos of being radical, together coupled with Tropicfeel’s aggressively loyal and involved community, proved to be perfect ingredients for Tropicfeel’s next ambitious product. The Shell is a backpack that comes with a rugged weatherproof design, expandable storage space, modular elements, and a one-of-a-kind wardrobe system that allows you to store clothes in your bag like you would in a closet. It behaves like a backpack when you want to store work essentials, a rucksack when you’re outdoors, and a portable wardrobe when you’re traveling on holiday. A dedicated section just for your laptop, charger, and tech peripherals sits right against your back, keeping it protected from others yet accessible to you at all times. The bag’s exterior comes with a 6L kangaroo pouch that gives you an extra fold-out compartment of storage for items you want to keep separate from the rest of your bag (shoes, wet clothes, etc.), while a detachable pouch with Fidlock® fixtures lets you easily attach a separate pouch to your bag.

The Shell comes with 22L of storage space, along with an expanding design that increases internal storage to 40L. A variety of pockets on the inside, as well as the outside, let you segregate and organize your stuff, but nothing matches up to Shell’s wardrobe system – a removable module that turns the inside of your backpack into a makeshift closet. The wardrobe module fits right into your backpack and can be removed and hung on a rod or hook in a room. With multiple sections, the wardrobe system is quite literally a miniature closet for you to store your clothes in. Not only does it make packing (and unpacking) easier, it enables you to live out of your backpack, but with the comfort of having your own organized wardrobe at your fingertips. The wardrobe system allows you to store your clothes without crushing them, and comes with straps on the side that help you compress it to save space, before fitting it into the Shell’s interior compartment. The Shell backpack even offers additional modular bags including a dedicated toiletry bag, a tech pouch, and a padded camera bag with adjustable walls to store your expensive equipment and accessories.

Not only does the Shell balance all these features, it does so while sticking to Tropicfeel’s strict sustainability guidelines. The backpack’s fabric, while rugged, waterproof, and weatherproof, comes made from Bluesign-approved 100% recycled nylon on the outside, and a 64% recycled polyester lining on the inside. The idea of sustainability extends to the rest of the bag’s construction too, which promises to last MUCH longer than any conventional travel bag – the Shell even comes with a lifetime guarantee. Designed for both the unpredictable outdoors as well as the cyclical nature of daily life, the Shell backpack takes wearer comfort into consideration too, with an ergonomic foam back-panel to keep your spine supported, sternum straps to reduce the stress on your shoulders, and frontal adjustable bands that help lower or raise the backpack depending on the weight it’s carrying. The expandable design even gives you the freedom to decide how big or small you want your bag to be based on how much you’re carrying. At 40L, the Shell serves the purpose of a rucksack, perfect for treks, camping trips, and long holidays. Compress it to an intermediate 30L size and you get yourself a balance between storage and the ability to stow your bag in a flight cabin. However, if you just need the backpack to serve your basic needs, the 22L size is ideally compact for your daily commute, serving as the quintessential laptop bag… albeit with more than a few tricks up its sleeve, and a guarantee to be the last bag you’ll ever need to own!

This ‘chameleon’ backpack with modular fascia can ‘shapeshift’ to suit your various needs

If Arya Stark were a backpack, she would probably be the What Pack. Obscure reference? Sure, but it drives home the point I’m trying to make. The What Pack isn’t one backpack… It’s multiple bag-styles built around a backpack’s framework. Featuring a modular setup that lets you replace the backpack’s face to change its visual appeal as well as its function, the What Pack is quite literally the ‘Bag with Many Faces’.

While the swappable face system is What Pack’s most standout feature, it sits on a very reliable base that’s designed to accommodate all your belongings perfectly. The base is a spacious 14L compartment, built to stash all your belongings securely and in dedicated spaces on both the inside and outside. A padded neoprene sleeve fits laptops as large as 16 inches, while additional pockets and pouches let you carry notebooks, A4 folders, tablets, stationery, and other small belongings. Pockets on the outside let you carry items like bottles and umbrellas, while discretely positioned pouches on the base and back let you secure more high-value belongings like cash and cards. The large inner compartment is perfect for everything from clothes to gear, and extension straps help hold all your stuff in place while compressing them to save up on storage space. The base interfaces with the swappable lids using a clamshell opening (which also makes it easy to access your bag’s belongings without having to rummage around) that lets you zip out one lid for another. What Pack’s Monochrome Series features four lid styles that alternate between four different scenarios – Casual, Work, Active, and Travel, covering practically all the bases, and giving you one backpack that carefully considers all your needs.

The four different faces solve their individual purposes with sheer attention to detail. While the Casual face gives your backpack a discreet, no-nonsense appearance, the Work face allows you to carry more, with separate compartments for your work essentials. The Active face is much more suited for trips to the gym, featuring a mesh pouch on the outside for airing out your gym clothes or shoes, while the Travel face gives your backpack an extra 3 liters of storage, bringing the total up to 17L. The swappable faces are also complemented by a swappable strap system, allowing you to choose between minimal Chic Shoulder Straps, or Utility Shoulder Straps with loops to secure your EDC or hang items. The bag even comes with built-in handles on the top, side, and even the bottom, allowing you to carry it any way you see fit, along with a convertible luggage sleeve that lets you strap the What Pack to your travel case while you’re dashing through the airport.

While the versatility feature is built right into the bag’s design-brief, its durable construction helps it be the versatile backpack you need for everything between work, play, and travel (whether it’s to the outdoors or via flight/transit). The body of the What Pack is made from water-resistant 900D Polyester PU, with an X-Pac VX21 base for added durability and wear-resistance. Water-resistant SBS zippers keep your belongings protected from the elements, and Duraflex hardware ensures your bag’s parts last much longer than the ones found on traditional backpacks. Plus, if you want to know more about how your bag’s built, its details, materials, care-instructions, or updates from the baker, a serialized NFC-chip built into the bag’s top lets you easily tap to access additional information about the What Pack on your NFC-ready smartphone. It also serves as a virtual authenticity-certificate, letting you know that the What-Pack you own is unique and original… even though it has multiple faces and identities!

How Kickstarter provided the perfect launchpad for this innovative modern travel backpack
