GameCube Portable in an Atari Lynx Case: Nine Lives

The Atari Lynx was the first handheld video game system to feature a full color display, but it still lost to the Game Boy because Nintendo’s handheld was cheaper, smaller and lasted longer on fewer batteries. Bacteria forum member Akira reunited the old rivals by using an Atari Lynx II’s case to house his GameCube portable mod.

Akira calls his mod the GC Lynx. It has a 4.3″ 480×272 widescreen display and a sweet custom paint job to match the color of the GameCube. Its joysticks, buttons and triggers were taken from a Wii controller and a GameCube controller. It lasts up to three hours on its 6400mAh battery and can be used while recharging. It runs games using Wasp Fusion, which lets you load copies of GameCube games – that you own! – from an SD card. It also has a second SD card slot for homebrew games and emulators. Skip to 8:00 in the video below to see it run games.

If you don’t have the time to watch the whole video, you can admire it with these images instead.

The Atari Lynx II was already smaller than its predecessor, and yet it’s still larger than a GameCube. But hey, Akira put all that real estate to good use. Now he’s asking good money for it. Bid at least €1,000 (~$1,350 USD) or pay €1,500 (~$2,000 USD) on eBay and the GC Lynx is yours. Modders should head to the Bacteria forums to check out Akira’s build log.

Awesome Despicable Me PC Casemod: Assemble the Minion!

As computers become smaller, thinner and more mobile, casemodding seems to be a dying art. That’s too bad. I was hoping that more people trick out their smartphones, tablets and AIO PCs, but that doesn’t seem to be the case (pun intended.)

That said, some hardcore gamers, CGI and video professionals are still using tower PCs. And if I still had a workstation computer in my office, I’d want it to look like this.

minion casemod 1 620x930magnify

This awesome case looks just like one of the Minions from Despicable Me. I think his name was Kevin, or maybe it’s Carl. I can’t keep all their names straight. Either way, this computer was built by Ronnie Hara, and is powerful enough to run the latest and greatest games with all the settings maxed out. It’s probably powerful enough to operate a secret evil supervillain’s lair too.

Also, it’s the only computer I know of that wears overalls. Oh, that reminds me of a joke… Q)What goes with overalls? A) A banjo and no women.

This Game Boy Has Been Bricked

I never would have thought that a Game Boy would look good as a brick, but it actually looks pretty awesome. It looks heavy, but cool. Anyway, you may not believe it, but Nintendo’s handheld gaming system recently celebrated it’s 25th birthday. Does that make you feel old?

To celebrate this milestone, Vadu Amka took inspiration from the people calling the Game Boy a “brick” and transformed an old model into an actual brick wall from the Zelda series. It even has a Triforce and a Hylian crest.

It looks like a handheld that belongs in the Game of Thrones world. Great job, Vadu. You bricked your Game Boy and we love it.

3D Printed Raspberry Pi Raspberry Case: Fruit of the Loom

We’ve seen pies with fruit inside. Instructables member Rick Winscot created a fruit with a whole Pi inside. Rick designed and printed a case for the Raspberry Pi that looks just like the Raspberry Pi Foundation logo.

Before you grab your 3D printer, just know that you’ll have to do more than print the case and stuff a Raspberry Pi inside. You’ll have to get some spare USB connectors and power adapter jacks, then solder those bits and fit them onto the base. You’ll then connect those to the Raspberry Pi’s ports, which will stick out of the bottom of the case. That way the whole thing can sit upright just like in Rick’s picture. You’ll also have to get magnets to secure the leafy lid.

Analogue Nt Plays NES & Famicom Games: 2000-in-1

Boutique video game shop Analogue Interactive announced that it’s going to release Analogue Nt, a retro console that can play both NES and Famicom cartridges. That’s double the library. Double the dribble. Double the dragon. And probably quintuple the Mario clones.

Analogue Nt is based on the NES hardware but will have support for up to four controllers as well as a case crafted from a single block of aluminum. Analogue Interactive should release more details about the console very soon, seeing as they plan on taking pre-orders by the end of the month.  If their Neo-Geo MVS case mod is any indication, you should expect to pay more than a current gen console for this one.

Beautiful Wooden Workbench Hides a PC: Maker’s Desk

Swedish artist Love Hultén continues to marry classic furniture with computers. One of his latest projects is Tempel, a modern workstation inspired by 19th century writing desks. It combines a workbench, a large drawer and a computer in one elegant piece of wooden furniture.

The workbench’s lid has an illuminated planetarium design beneath its keyhole. Below the workbench are 26 drawers.

Custom Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles NES: Heroes on a Console

The last time we featured console modder Ryan Fitzpatrick aka Platinum Fungi we saw his personal tribute to Mega Man 2. His latest finished project on the other hand is up for grabs. It’s a radical Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles NES.

As with the Mega Man 2 NES, Ryan worked with fellow modder Custom NES Guy on this mod. The star of the project are the cutouts on top of the console, which Ryan painstakingly made by hand. But there are also lots of tiny details to appreciate here, from the great color scheme and paint job to the four bundled controllers, each with an overlay representing a different member of the Turtles.

As I said, Ryan is selling this particular console. It’s going to cost you more than a box of pizza though. As of this writing you have to bid at least $1,275 (USD) on eBay to get a chance at owning the console.

Xbox One Laptop: The VCR Slims Down

Okay, okay, I kid. The Xbox One doesn’t look that much like a VCR, but it still is about a big as one. But leave it to an enterprising console modder like James “DarkUncle” Terry to solve that problem, by transforming an Xbox One into a laptop.

xbox one laptop 1 620x330zoom in

What you’re looking at here is what I’m reasonably certain is the very first Xbox One laptop mod. The Console measures only two-inches-thick when closed, and that includes the size of the LCD flat panel built into its lid. That’s even more impressive when you realize that the Xbox One normally measures almost three inches-thick. The top of the console has a matte black finish, with an integrated touch power control and a gloss black shell around the outside. He also added custom buttons for controller sync, eject, and audio volume. Between its additional cooling fans and the standard Xbox One heatsink, James says it stays nice and cool too.

The laptop has all of the regular ports from an Xbox One, but also added an audio line-out connector, which Microsoft neglected to include on the console. Check out the build in the video below:

Great job, James! Now all you need to do is figure out a way to build the Kinect into it, and shrink down Microsoft’s power brick, and all will be right with the world.

If you’re interested in having your own custom Xbox One laptop built, head on over to Dark Uncle Custom Gaming to get in touch with James.

Secret Base PC Casemod: Cyberpunk over Function

Yeah, there’s a computer in here somewhere. This is Japanese designer Hiroto Ikeuchi’s award-winning casemod, which is basically a toy diorama that erupted over a PC. According to Wired, Hiroto calls the diorama his “secret base.” It’s filled with soldiers, mecha and guns along with gadgets, electronics and trinkets made to look like weapons or heavy machinery.

Lëkki Nintendo 64 Consoles: Next-Gen Refurbishing

Imagine Slowpoke starting a ColorWare franchise and you get the concept behind Lëkki. The French gadget shop sells and repaints only old – but beloved – gadgets, such as the Motorola StarTAC 130. Their latest (?) offering is the Nintendo 64, a console even older than Motorola’s thousand-year old flip phone, but no less popular.

The console is available in four colorways and comes with a similarly colored controller and a copy of Super Mario 64, which is probably the best launch game of all time.
