Kingdom Hearts Action Figures: S&M Mickey

I’ve never played the Kingdom Hearts video game or watched it be played so I’m not sure what the deal is with all the black leather and chains. All I know is that each time I see Kingdom Hearts Mickey in his black leather and shiny buckles I think of the Pulp Fiction “bring out the gimp” scene.

If you are a fan of the Disney x Final Fantasy crossover series, here is a trio of action figures from the franchise that you might want to add to your collection.

There are four action figures in the set, including Organization XII Version King Mickey, Halloween Town Version Sora with a Pumpkinhead key blade and two Jack Skellington figures. You also get his dog, Zero. The entire set is $39.99(USD) and is available now at ThinkGeek.

Final Fantasy XV Demo Codes Are on eBay: No Type-0

A number of eBay sellers are doing what Square Enix didn’t have the guts to do and are selling just the demo voucher for Final Fantasy XV, which comes with the PS4 and Xbox One game Final Fantasy Type-0 HD. The vouchers are selling for $0.99 (USD) to over $40 on the auction site, and there appear to be many takers.

These particular vouchers were sold by eBay seller rated-r-superstar for $30 and $36 respectively.

Poor Class Zero, fighting at the forefront while Prince Noctis and his bodyguards reap the rewards. They can’t even get $20 from you guys? That’s less than $2 for each of them! How’s Ace going to buy more cards? Seriously though I can’t fault people who don’t want to play FF Type-0 HD if they don’t want to play $60 just for the demo. But I’m not comfortable with the message this is sending to publishers. We’re already paying to be beta and alpha testers these days. I don’t want to pay to see an advertisement.

Final Fantasy VII Sequel Concept: Final Fantasy VII: Time Guardian

Along with death and taxes, one other thing is certain: at any given time somewhere in this wide world of ours there are people arguing about Final Fantasy VII. One of the most argued points is whether or not the PlayStation classic should get a direct sequel. Indie game developer Rodensoft wishes for such a thing, and it made a proof-of-concept of its ideas for a sequel using the original game’s engine.

Rodensoft’s Final Fantasy VII: Time Guardian is set in an alternate version of the original game’s events, flourished with features found in sandbox or open world games. The concept gets its name from two things: its premise and its gameplay tweaks. I’m going to talk about Final Fantasy VII’s story for a bit, so if you haven’t played it yet but want to, I suggest you skip the next paragraph.

In Final Fantasy VII Reeve sacrificed Cait Sith at the Temple of the Ancients aka the Black Materia in order to turn it into its more portable materia form and hide it from Sephiroth. But in Rodensoft’s imagined sequel, an entity called the Time Guardian appears at the temple and foils Cait Sith’s heroics. The Time Guardian sends Cait Sith and the other heroes back in time and rewrites their history.

Gameplay-wise, the sequel’s title alludes to the addition of a day and night cycle and its resulting RPG trappings, such as buildings and characters that are accessible only at certain times.

As it revealed on a Qhimm thread, Rodensoft came up with this concept mainly because it wanted to keep wandering in and exploring Final Fantasy VII‘s world. For Rodensoft that meant turning it into an open world game.

So aside from the day and night cycle, the studio added dynamic weather, randomly generated dungeons, item gathering and presumably tons of quests and side quests, things that you can find in open world greats such as Skyrim and Grand Theft Auto. Rodensoft’s trailer sums up the game’s features:

Rodensoft says it already finished most of Final Fantasy VII: Time Guardian‘s code, but it won’t finish the game. Licensing issues aside, it’s just too much work for the studio to make the new content, especially since it structured the game as spanning nine compact discs, and running on the original PS1. The developer says it’s already working on a similar game but with its own setting and characters. So back to arguing folks!

Custom Final Fantasy VII Midgar PlayStation Case Mod: Shinradical!

Console modder MakoMod gave me a blast of nostalgia with this wonderful case mod. His PlayStation case mod features a scale model of Midgar, the technological pizza that Cloud, Barrett, Tifa and Aeris call home.

MakoMod made the case mod over an 8-month period. He made the scale model itself from scratch out of aluminum and cold-casted resin. He also used optical fiber to add lights to the scale model. Here’s MakoMod proving that the console is fully functional:

The city has a couple of tiny Easter eggs, including Aeris’ church and a tiny figure of Cloud near the train station where we first meet him in Final Fantasy VII.

Super-Fan Builds: Final Fantasy Kitchen Knives

Kitchen knives are something that we all need. Every now and then, you gotta chop stuff up or cut a steak after all. You could go with plain old boring kitchen knives, or you could go for something like this awesome Final Fantasy inspired set.

final_fantasy_kitchen_knives_1zoom in

The knives look like weapons used in the franchise and are stored in a stand that looks like the creepy purple octopus Ultros. The knives include Auron’s katana from FFX, Cloud’s buster sword from FFVII, and Sephiroth’s masamune from FFVII. The coolest is Squall’s gunblade from FFVIII.

This isn’t a build that normal folk could undertake. The set was made by the master prop builders from Super-Fan Builds with the help of the folks at Man At Arms for the weapons. I think if they actually built these to sell, they would sell a bunch.

Smell The Game with These Gamer Candles

If you want to set the mood when you’re gaming, don’t just get the Cheetos and 2-liter bottle of Mountain Dew. Use these candles as well. They’re gamer candles from Gametee. They smell like your games. Promise.

Sweded Video Game T-shirts: Concept Farts

Here’s a fun idea for a gamer gift. Several NeoGAF forum members, egged on by member dog$, made custom video game-themed t-shirt designs that are funny, witty and most of all, ugly. The t-shirts are based on a custom clothing shop called CustomInk, which has an online T-shirt design tool. The rule of the thread? Only use CustomInk’s stock art for your design. Here’s one of dog$’ mighty contributions:

customink video game t shirt by dogsmagnify

That of course, is based on the trailer for Final Fantasy XV. Here’s another complex design, from AlexMeloche:

Others used in-game references to amp up the humor, such as this one by Amorbis:

customink video game t shirt by amorbismagnify

Some poked fun at video game controversies or glitches, such as this one by Webhead:

Some like DryvBy went way back for their references:

And then there’s BurritoBushido:

There are a couple of truly cool ones though, like this one by ichtyander:

…and this one by Funky Functionality:

Here’s mine. It’s nowhere near as good as the NeoGAF ones though. #BrokenLords #DustRulesEverythingAroundMe.

Set aside an hour of your life and give it a shot on CustomInk’s website. You can also browse NeoGAF for more inspiration.

Final Fantasy-inspired Bookmark Saves Your Progress

Fans of the Final Fantasy series will recognize this blue box right away. I know that it is burned into my subconscious thanks to many hours of playing. It is that box that asks whether you’d like to save your progress or not. Naturally when reading a book, you can save your progress too. Or lose your page. Save it with this bookmark.

Olly Moss made this familiar box into a bookmark for Urban Outfitters. What’s that? Final Fantasy isn’t your cup of nerd tea? Well, you can always design a bookmark based on the save game boxes of other games if you want. Go to Kotaku to download an image and print your own. How cool is that?

This one has to be the best bookmark ever though. It brings back so many gaming memories.
