Italian earthquake victims asked to disable WiFi passwords

Early Wednesday a 6.2 magnitude earthquake struck central Italy, killing at least 120 people and trapping countless others under debris. To help ease communications for search and recovery, multiple disaster relief institutions are urging locals to t...

Sea Safety for Dummies

hexa_01

HEXA, named for its 6-sided shape, is a revolutionary life-saving device for use at sea. Because the nature of ship accidents varies greatly, both crew and passengers will tend to panic even with extensive training. For these moments, HEXA requires only that it be dropped in the water where it will automatically activate upon contact. 6 inflatable sections will self-inflate allowing individuals to climb on board or jump to safety. Additionally, an RFID signal will also be triggered for easy geolocation by rescue teams. Inside the center of the pod, users will also find survival supplies like food, flares and lifejackets.

Guy Crashes Drone on Neighbor’s Roof, Sends Another to Rescue It

As a kid I had many a Frisbee or baseball land on the neighbor’s roof. It probably happened to you too. These days it seems that drones that are more likely to get stuck on people’s roofs. Do you knock on the door and get help to retrieve it? Get a ladder? No way. You send in another drone!

After Harrisen Howes’ friend accidentally crashed his drone on a neighbor’s roof, he sent in a rescue drone with coat hanger hooks attached. Luckily for us he documented the rescue.

And it has a happy ending. He sends in the rescue drone, hooks onto the crippled drone and lifts it to safety. As more drones fill the sky, Harrisen may have a future career in drone recovery. He gets the job done.

In Safe Waters

Cars are supposed to be watertight hence self-rescuing in the case of a car-water-drowning situation can get sticky. The “Self Rescuer” is a self-rescuer specially designed for this situation. It has three functions: cutting seat belt, breaking windows with pneumatic hammer, and extinguish fire with CO2. Simply deploy the window breaking mechanism and save yourself!

The core component of ‘Self rescuer’ is the embedded storage tank that is filled with liquid CO2. As we know from physics knowledge, if we press CO2 gas with a 7M Pa pressure at normal temperature, we will get CO2 liquid; While if we release the relief valve that is equipped to the storage tank, the CO2 liquid will expand enormously to a high-speed airflow. That’s how the air hammer works. In the meanwhile, the ambient temperature will decrease remarkably as the CO2 liquid vaporizes to gas. And considering the fire retarding effect of CO2, Self Rescue Kit can put out a fire efficiently.

The Self Rescuer is a 2014 Red Dot Awards: Design Concept winner.

Jet Powered Rescue

When it comes to lifeguard rescues, seconds can mean the difference between life and death. With this in mind, the ResQ board was designed specifically to cut rescue time in torrential waters which generally take longer to tackle. The power-assisted device is driven by tandem electric motors via water-jet propulsion. Because it’s intended to be used near sunny areas, each is rechargeable on a solar docking station.

Flood Fighter

As the risk of flooding increases with environmental change, so does the potential for human disaster. Unfortunately, those currently at risk must rely on predicted data rather than real-time information. The Flood Beacon aims to address this issue by detecting water surges and issuing widespread alerts to not only the appropriate rescue teams but the general public via mobile phone notifications. Genius! More in the vid after the jump —>

Air Rope Inflatable Tunnel: An Alternative Way to Get out of Sticky Situations

There are a lot of emergency situations that call for the use of rope. Unfortunately, rope pulley systems aren’t the safest way to go sometimes due to external conditions. Like, say, when there are floods or overflowing rivers and people are trapped on one end. No doubt you’ve seen similar scenarios in movies where the hero clings to the rope and pulls himself to safety on the other side. But regular folks might lose their grip and be swept away by the current.

As an alternative to this, the Air Rope came to be.

Air Rope 620x326magnify

It’s essentially an inflatable tunnel that functions as a rope in the sense that it will help you get across certain obstacles without relying so much on your arms. Emergency response people could set up and inflate the tunnel within minutes and have people cross the river by crawling through it instead of using the rope system.

Air Rope1 620x139magnify

Air Rope is a rescue system that takes the form of an inflated tunnel. It can be used as a thoroughfare across a river when secured to the ground and a tree at each end. A motor and propeller create a powerful flow of air. The air nozzle has a screw-in profile to prevent air leakage. Aluminium alloy, which is light and strong, is used for the metal components.

Air Rope was designed by Lee Jee Won, Lee Juan, and Lee Yong Ho and is a 2013 Red Dot Design Concept Award winner.

Whistle Glows in the Dark so Survivors Can Find It

Whistles can come in handy during emergencies and natural disasters. They’re especially useful in catching the attention of rescuers who might not be able to see survivors clearly because of the conditions. Unfortunately, not everyone walks around carrying a whistle in their pocket or wearing one around their neck.

Whistle Aid

The redesigned whistle by Park On-hee, Kim Myeoung-soo, and Jang Young-seo aim to address these problems. Aptly called WHISTLE, it’s a round, ball-shaped whistle that can easily roll into cracks and crevices to reach survivors who might be trapped under rubble.

They’re glow-in-the-dark, so they can easily be spotted by the people who need them – assuming they know what they are.

Whistle Aid1

It is proposed that whistles like these could be dropped or thrown en masse into areas where people might be trapped. It’s definitely a good idea, and we’re not the only ones who think so, as WHISTLE is also a 2013 IDEA Awards entry.

The Guiding Light

Only if the Titanic had been adequately equipped with rescue gear, many more people would have survived the sinking. The thing with disasters is that they are unpredictable and the only way to outsmart it is to be prepared. Life Guide is one such rescue equipment that takes advantage of technology to ensure safe rescues on a capsizing boat or ship.

Designed as a quarter-circle shaped device, it hooks onto three others, to complete a full circle. It can be used as an alternate light source and in the event of an emergency red LED light start flashing. Essentially the device can be used as a flashlight, exit guide and flotation gear. RFID signals connect each device to the nearest emergency exit. I like the scope of this gear and hopefully it inspires something as comprehensive as this.
