The ShelfPack Really Lets You Live out of Your Suitcase

You know how it is, you travel somewhere, and you don’t bother to unpack. It’s easier to just get the stuff you need as you need it. Why unpack when you will just be leaving soon anyway? The ShelfPack is for exactly these kinds of people.

This suitcase has an integrated collapsible shelving system so you can literally live out of your suitcase. You can keep your clothes more organized and easily accessible, while technically still living out of your suitcase. As long as you aren’t too lazy to use this, it’s a great way to never fully unpack.

The ShelfPack sells for $350(USD), which is rather pricey for a suitcase, but I think it’s well worth it, since you don’t want to move your stuff back and forth.

Hive-like Shelving Needs No Tools For Assembly

Anyone who’s ever bought anything from IKEA knows the joys of fiddling around with L-shaped Hex keys and screwdrivers for assembly. Much as we grumble about the process, this tool-assisted assembly process is what makes the items sturdy and keeps their cost down. But Israeli industrial designer Ruthy Shafrir wants to take things a step further and altogether remove the need for any tools in the assembly process of her hive-like shelf unit, called Ruche. It’s made from either aluminum or cardboard sheets that slot into one another, and offers surprising sturdiness given the lack of any structural fasteners. The cardboard version can support up to “10 kg (22 lb) for the small 15.5 in (34.5 cm) high version, to 64 kg (142 lb) for the large (39.4 in (100 cm)). In the sturdier aluminum model, the small version can bear 18 kg (39.6 lb) and the large 80 kg (176 lb).” That’s a lot for something that can allegedly be assembled in around 6 minutes.

Currently on Kickstarter, pledges start at $30 and go up to $180 for the large aluminum Ruche.

Most bicycle mounts are little more than a hook (or pair of hooks) that holds up the bicycle frame off the ground and on the wall. The Shelfie is not only more attractive than a hook, it’s also way more useful because it’s also a shelf- as the name would imply. Using both walnut and river-recovered pine, the Dutchman completely originates in North Carolina, USA. The walnut is sourced from naturally fallen trees in the Blue Ridge Mountains of NC while the river pine is resurrected in Wilminton, NC. The river pine or “old growth pine” was cut more than 150 years ago. Because the trees are slow growing and so dense with pitch, many of them sank to the bottom of the Cape Fear River as they were transported to the nearest mill. When the mills along the river closed in the early 1900s, these sunken trees were forgotten in the muddy bottom. Using sonar, the sunken logs are resurrected and given new life.

This bookshelf is designed to skewer your perception of 3 dimensional space and volume. Created by Charles Kalpakian, the Rocky Bookshelf is a metallic brain bender of a storage unit. Depending upon your angle of viewing, the shelves will look different. These steel shelves are based on a 3D variation of a classic cabinet maker pattern. It’s hard to even tell where the openings are and what’s flat and what’s angled (based on the photos).

Side view above. The bookshelf comes in a few color choices made of lacquered steel and measures 55″ wide by 37″ high by 14″ deep. It’s almost like an optical illusion furniture piece.

These flexible bookshelves, called “Chuck” (site in German) flexes to fit whatever books or other items you place on them. The shelves are made of a a series of pliable wooden planks all coming together at the two ends inside a metal bracket. It almost looks like a mouth. The bracket has rods going through slots in the wood to keep them from sliding right out.

The shape changes depending upon what size books you place in the shelves and where you place them. Here’s a video showing a man rearranging the shelves a few times.

The website is in German and I don’t really see a way to purchase them (probably since I don’t speak German). Natascha Harra-Frischkorn designed the shelves.

Etsy seller FictionFurniture brings us this Dark Knight inspired set of bookshelves. You can have your very own for just under $300. The shelves are shaped a little weird so unless you’ve got a funky-shaped book collection then these shelves are prettyyyy impractical. Impractical, but COOL. And Bruce Wanye approved. Jk jk, I don’t know about all that. I’m not sure if Bruce-Bruce is a literary type or not. Me? I like books. The ones with the pictures especially. That way I can figure out WTF is going on in the story. Otherwise, I got zero clue. It’s because I don’t know how to read!
