Shwood Stone Sunglasses Rock, Literally.

For a long time, most sunglasses have made of the same basic materials – plastic or metal. Recently, I’ve seen wooden sunglasses and even shades made from recycled skateboards pop up. These sunglasses fuse wood with stone to make them look quite rugged.

The Shwood Stone Collection includes two models, the Canby Stone and White Slate. Both versions fuse genuine slate with premium birch wood. The inlays are hand-poured as well, giving the sunglasses a natural, refined look. Each pair of sunglasses comes with a custom felt pouch with an embroidered leather patch.

The sunglasses are limited to 200 pairs and ship in 2 to 4 weeks. They cost between $295 and $325 (USD). Act fast if you like the style.

Carbon Fiber Stone

Applied perfectly to this ultra-contemporary garden setting, Peter Donders’ creative seating designs, the C Bench and Stone, instantly command a strong visual attraction. Each uses a single strand of carbon fiber twisted around a mold. When the mold is removed the resulting structure is organic and airy in aesthetic yet incredibly strong. They’re a surprising solution for both indoor/outdoor seating and exceptional for defining a variety of modern spaces.

Sandstone PC Casemod is Positively Prehistoric

We’ve featured some unusual casemods around here over the years, but the well seemed to have been drying up until recently. With computers becoming more compact, and more all-in-one devices, there’s not as much of a customization scene anymore. So when I stumble across an interesting mod these days, I have to jump on it – even one that was actually made all the way back in 2004.

This particular mod may not have the latest and greatest in PC tech on board, but that’s not the point. In fact, I figure that this computer carved from a chunk of sandstone deserves some stone age tech to go along with it. It was built by artist Aram Bartholl out of a chunk of sandstone, measuring approximately 19″ x 23″ x 16″, and sports an achingly old-school 386DX40 PC motherboard. At least it’s easy to upgrade the memory with it sticking out of the front like that.

Rounding out the archaic design is a black-and-white GoldStar computer monitor (did you know that LG used to be GoldStar?), a 3.5″ floppy drive and a clunky old PS/2 keyboard. If you watch the video footage above, you’ll even get to see it playing the PC classic, Prince of Persia.

Skippy the Robot Skips Stones, and That’s It.

Try as I might, I’ve never been able to skip a stone across water in my life. And while there are some people who possess this skill, I’m not one of them. That’s okay, because it turns out there’s a robot to do my bidding skipping.

Skippy the Robot flings stones perfectly across the surface of water every time. The ‘bot is set up along a lake in Sun Valley, Idaho, and you can actually instruct Skippy to skip a stone across this idyllic scene if you are patient enough to wait in line for it. But even if you don’t want to wait, here’s a little clip of Skippy in action, doing his thing, so you can get the point.

If you’d like to ask Skippy to fling a stone on your behalf, head on over to the appropriately named www.stoneskippingrobot.com.

Pebbles Carpet Lets You Walk on Rocks in Comfort

I recently visited this spa that was literally full of rocks. Rock treatments, rock decor, and a rock-covered pathway. I don’t know what it is about walking on rocks, but it was kind of relaxing and therapeutic. And you can get the same experience every time you walk across your living room with the Pebbles Carpet.

Pebbles Carpet1The carpet incorporates actual smooth stone pebbles sewn in between two layers of synthetic fabric, so it feels soft yet hard at the same time. It might not be the best carpet for accident-prone people or for those who are into rich and lush carpets, but it does have that added therapeutic factor.
