Weather Or Not

It’s one thing to READ the weather and something entirely different to FEEL it. That’s the idea behind Dandelion, named after the flower signal for springtime. Soft “spores” on top of the unit let your fingers detect the temperature/wind strength by haptic experience.

Like your smartphone, Dandelion receives the temperature and wind strength information by wireless connection but differs in that it transfers that info into tactile feedback. The fan blowing below the spores controls the wind strength. When the spores shake more, it means the wind outside is stronger.

The heating/cooling module inside mimics the external temperature of the wind along with ambient lighting that changes colors visually emphasize the temp. By gently touching the spores, you can feel the breeze/temperature outside and choose your wardrobe accordingly!

Fever Scout Tracks Your Baby’s Fever Continuously

Fever-Scout

Like many physical illnesses, fevers are best treated if caught early. Especially for a toddler or a baby, being able to provide him with the right medical attention at the right time can make the difference between a speedy recovery and a few days of crying and worrying. Fever Scout is a soft flexible patch that your kid wears on his chest at all times. It continuously monitors his temperature and sends it to your smartphone; if ever it goes beyond some preset range, it’ll notify you immediately. It’ll also generate a graph of his temperature over time, letting you see what’s effective and what’s not. It’s not meant to be worn for months at a time, only a few days when necessary, and the kit comes with 10 medical grade adhesive patches. It’s $60 and available early 2016.

Hot New Car Paint Is Very Cool

One of my least favorite things is getting into a steaming hot car in the middle of summer. You can open the windows, turn on the air and start driving to get the breeze flowing and you’re still going to suffer and sweat it out for a while. Well, a revolutionary new paint developed in the Applied Physics Lab at Johns Hopkins University may be able to solve that burning issue.

The paint is created using the extremely abundant compound silica, which is the primary ingredient in glass. Basically, you cover a metal surface with this new paint and it sends sunbeams that hit it harmlessly back to where they came from. And not only does it keep metal surfaces cool, but also it’s a lot more durable than the paint used on today’s cars. The paint’s creator, Jason Benkoski, says, “It’s almost like painting a rock on top of your metal, and this thing’s going to last for not tens of years, but maybe hundreds of years.” Even better, metal deteriorates more quickly when it gets hot, so not only will the paint last a long time, but the metal itself will have a longer, stronger life.

While I am most looking forward to this paint keeping my car cool during the torrid months, Benkoski, who developed the paint to be used on U.S. Navy ships, says his favorite application will be on metal playground slides to protect kids like his two-year-old son. Brilliant. Unfortunately, we’ll have to sweat it out for a little while still, because widespread testing won’t start for another couple of years.

Be Your Own Weather Station

Weather is a fickle thing, and resources for checking the weather are about as reliable. If you live in a coastal region, you know that conditions can change in the amount of time it takes to get to the beach. BloomSky is a unique crowdsourcing system that consists of a durable outdoor solar-powered camera with various climate sensors and a mobile app. Together they allow users to view live video and data of weather conditions wherever a stake is planted. Before heading out, check the pressure, UV, rain, temp, and humidity from anyone’s personal sensor, anywhere.

Easy Home Heating

Mirage is anything but unreal. It’s a well-rounded approach to home heating design, and not just in the visual sense! The system aims to replace current inefficient central heating units as well as provide heat to low-income homes without any existing unit. Mountable on any wall, it draws in cool, mid-level air to heat before circulating it from above and below to create an invisible whirling mass of warm air. No unsightly controls or cords, the user can control it from the convenience of their tablet or smartphone, even while away.
