Make it, take it, and keep it hot… or cold!

No more burnt tongues, and no more cold coffee! The Ember Mug enhances the enjoyment of eating and drinking, by giving people precise temperature control for beverages.

The design redefine take-it-to-go culture by utilizing smart tech and an minimalistic interface. Rotating the bottom dial adjusts the temperature and reveals a hidden display of the target temperature. The lid allows drinking from any side to avoid spills, and is sealed with a simple push-push mechanism. Integrated charging contact points on the bottom enable charging through an elegant coaster. This means you can make it hot, take it hot, and keep it hot (or cold!). Better yet, you can control the mug remotely by adjusting the temperature through a smartphone app!

CKIE Product of the week – Portobello Mug

portobello_mug_1

You know how you judge a person for being someone and then that very same person turns out to be pretty awesome and you feel regret? The Portobello Mug’s resonates with that previous sentence, believe me.

At first glance, you’re bound to think, hey, there’s just another white tumbler for your beverage of choice; but NO! That’s where this Clark Kent rips his white shirt to show you his Superman suit underneath! The Portobello Mug isn’t a simple ceramic tumbler! It’s actually a pretty nifty flask. That’s right, it has the ability to keep your drink warmer than usual, even with the liquid exposed to the atmosphere at the top of the mug. The mug has a matte finish that makes it great to hold, a silicone base so it doesn’t slide off any lopsided surface, and a drool-worthy gold lustre pattern that looks like Andy Warhol Vs. the Lunar Calendar.

So… Head down to the CKIE store, grab this mug, and be the coolest person with the hottest drink at your local barista!

Ember Temperature-adjustable Mug: Thermostat for Drinks

Most mugs and bottles can keep a drink’s temperature for hours, but the new Ember mug can actually change the temperature of its contents. And I thought the self-stirring mug was magical.

ember_mug_1zoom in

This 350mL mug uses separate cooling and heating elements to change – and maintain – the temperature of its contents. You set the temperature by turning its base, upon which a hidden display will light up to indicate the temperature as you adjust. Ember also has a mobile app for iOS and Android devices with Bluetooth 4.0. The app not only lets you set the temperature but also save temperature presets. The app will also notify you if your drink has reached your target temperature. Temperature temperature temperature.

Ember’s built-in battery can power its heating and cooling powers for only two hours per charge. Fortunately it comes with a charging coaster so it can keep running as long as you have it plugged in.

Pledge at least $129 (USD) on Indiegogo to receive an Ember mug as a reward. It’s certainly a useful product; the only annoying thing about it as of this writing is that the company behind it have yet to provide the temperature range that Ember can provide.

Coffee Talk

fdnstudiolab_theconversation00

The Conversation is a collection of 8 mugs that aims to inspire just that! The series explores and encourages a dialectic in regards to design. Each has is printed with a thought-provoking statement that will get your wheels turning in the morning. While you ponder the statement, its “missing” handle will also get you thinking about our preconceptions as to what design is and should be!

Star Wars R2-D2 Mug: Astromug

Out of all the Star Wars characters in the originally trilogy, R2-D2 was always my favorite. I always wished his beeps and bleeps were subtitled so I knew what he was saying. You might recall that awesome Darth Vader lidded coffee mug that I talked about last week. Now, we have the R2-D2 version of that mug.

It has R2’s dome head that sits on top to protect your drink from being tainted by anything. I’m not sure if this thing is microwave safe, if it is that lid would be perfect for keeping the microwave clean.

R2 will hold 20 ounces of your favorite liquid, and is also perfect for hiding blueprints to the Death Star. Get your own at ThinkGeek for $19.99 right now.

Dancing Baby Groot Mug Wants Your Coffee Black

If you stayed to see the after credit scene in Guardians of the Galaxy, you saw baby Groot growing back after being destroyed while helping his friends survive the spaceship crash. Baby Groot was probably the cutest thing about that movie, if not during the entire summer of 2014.

groot-mugzoom in

Groot fans will want this Guardians of the Galaxy Dancing Baby Groot mug. Groot doesn’t actually dance but he has his little tree arms in the air, waving like he just doesn’t care. Groot is on the lid of the mug and the works sort of looks like the pot Groot was planted in from the film.

When you remove the lid, Groot goes with it and it will look like a plain white mug. The lid should keep bugs out of your coffee, so there’s that too. The mug sells for $14.99(USD) on ThinkGeek.

Schrödinger’s Cat Mug: If You Sip Your Coffee, The Cat Dies

Erwin Schrödinger clearly had a cat more laid back than mine. If you put my cat into a box, you’d come away scratched up, and the cat would meow and hiss so much inside the box that there is no mistaking it for dead. If you want to celebrate the famous thought experiment and make cat lovers annoyed at the same time, here is your mug.

catrmugzoom in

On the side opposite the handle, this square ceramic mug has a radiation symbol. On the two other sides one shows a happy smiling kitty alive and well. On the other side, it has a dead kitty with “X” eyes and a frowny face.

You can get your own specimen of this dishwasher safe mug for $9.99(USD) at ThinkGeek. Now you know what to get your physics teacher for Christmas.

Critical Hit D20 Mug: +4 Caffeination

One of the coolest things that I have seen in a long time turned up last September with that D20 Critical Hit cake pan that made cakes that looked like the dreaded 20-sided dice from Dungeons & Dragons. I always hated it when the DM pulled that thing out because I knew death was near.

d20-mug-1zoom in

Anyone who likes to eat 20-sided dice cakes and needs a suitably geeky mug for tea, coffee, or hot chocolate to go with them, here it is. This mug looks like a 20-sided die and has a removable lid.

d20-mug-2zoom in

If you play D&D with the sort of people I grew up, with that lid might keep you from getting dice tossed in your drink. It would also keep you from dropping Doritos crumbs in your own drink. Get your own D20 mug for just $12.99(USD) at ThinkGeek.
