Drones are all over the news, but not often for good reasons. It’s a bad wrap! But the UARV (Unmanned Aerial Rescue Vehicle) is a perfect example of how these technologically advanced drones can provide a positive impact by saving lives. Designed to operate within mountainous terrain, the pilotless chopper aids in search and rescue operations by tracking missing individuals, delivering rescue equipment and goods, and illuminating search areas for rescue teams all while keeping them out of harms way.

The latest from aviation enthusiast Oscar Viñals, the AWWA “Sky Whale” concept aircraft explores the use of hybrid engine technology and active airflow wings. The unique wing system is longer from tip-to-tip and includes an integrated turbine near the fuselage which redirects laminar airflow while producing supplemental energy for the hybrid engines. Looks like an ultra-modern Spruce Goose!

Multifunctional Space Tourer

The latest from space travel-enthusiast Oscar Viñals, the M2G White Bat combines space tourism with scientific exploration to expand the functionality of each trip. While primarily focused on the passenger’s space experience, the craft would be capable of delivering a number of commercial satellites or drones as supplementary support. In addition, an independently operated capsule with a single passenger could be deployed upon reentry in order to train and prepare astronauts for return missions.

Paper airplanes finally get the smartphone remote control they deserve

Thank you, PowerUp. Apparently the last time we had the opportunity to write about paper airplanes was back in 2011, when a Seattle doctor built a tiny one using a da Vinci surgical robot. This time out, it's a Kickstarter project that brings smartphone control to the notoriously staid word of paper airplanes. The gadget's setup is pretty simple, all said. At the front is a Bluetooth module and battery, while the back contains the propeller and rudder. Build a paper airplane, attach the PowerUp up and boom, you've got RC aircraft you can control with your smartphone. Creator Shai Goitein has taken the project to Kickstarter in an attempt to score $50,000 in funding. A pledge of $30 will get one of these little fliers in your hands, come May of next year. That's plenty of time to practice your folding skills.

Boeing gives retired F-16 fighter new life as a drone (video)

No, you cant be a fighter pilot, Boeings turning F16 planes into drones now

If "fighter pilot" was your desired career, you'd better hurry up now that Boeing is looking to replace you with a robot. The company has retrofitted a retired F-16 fighter, which had laid dormant for 15 years, into a drone for combat training missions. Rather than risking life and limb in the cockpit, two test pilots can maneuver the craft, now called QF-16, from Florida's Tyndall Air Force Base -- presenting rookie flyers with a target that can hit 9G and supersonic speeds. There's an explanatory video below, which explains the benefits of computer controlled planes but... wait a minute, isn't this the plot of Stealth?

Pizza Box Airplane: Fly Pepperoni Airlines

This airplane is guaranteed to crash within a half hour or less, or your money back. Here’s the story. Darren Lewis and Phil Reilly built this awesome and surprisingly functional remote-controlled airplane out of an old Dominos Pizza box.

Well, a pizza box, an RC controller and $35 worth of parts. It even has an actuated rudder and ailerons. Pay attention Dominos. This is how I want my pizza delivered next time. It flies surprisingly well. It is actually a thing of beauty. But maybe that’s because I’m really hungry right now.

It proves that pizza box technology should be applied to aviation right away. Maybe it could shoot some breadstick missiles.

Easy Glider

Alexander Shevchenko’s Delta hang-glider explores the use of new materials that are more efficient to fix or replace in common occurrences like breaks, cracks or other damage. Composed primarily of laminated foam, the winged structure maintains rigidity and lightness necessary for flight but can also be easily and cheaply repaired, replaced, and recycled.

US Navy’s X-47B unmanned jet successfully lands on an aircraft carrier

The US Navy's unmanned plane, the X-47B, has been in development for years. It first flew in 2011, began testing aboard an aircraft carrier in late 2012, and finally took off from a floating airstrip earlier this year. Taking off from a moving ship is easier than landing on one, of course, but the X-47B accomplished that task today when it successfully landed on the USS George H.W. Bush. And, just to show off, shortly thereafter the X-47B was launched from carrier via catapult and, once again, landed successfully. So, it looks to be only a matter of time before our Top Guns look more like Watson, and less like Tom Cruise.

Luxury Atmosphere in the Stratosphere

With the brand’s deep roots stemming from aircraft design, who better to design Singapore Airlines’ First Class interior than the BMW Group Designworks USA?! To bring a premium experience to the airline, the designers have endowed the cabin with a new look along with an extra helping of comfort, space and privacy. The updated design for the seats and suites will make its debut this September on board the new Boeing 777-300ER on selected flights between Singapore and London. 

One of the top echelons of the design sector came up with a keen challenge for DesignworksUSA: to reconcile the aviation brief and its stringent safety standards with the luxury requirements of passengers. Tapping into the creativity of the BMW Group subsidiary, Singapore Airlines aimed to further enhance its First Class facilities and set new benchmarks for luxury-class comfort in the skies. The entire ambience has been redesigned to offer passengers not only raised luxury levels but also greater privacy and increased stowage space for luggage and travel accoutrements

From the moment they board the aircraft, First Class passengers are pampered in their lounge-like islands. In order to shield these havens of peace visually and acoustically, the outer walls of the seating area have been extended and embrace the passenger like a protective arm. For sleeping, the luxury seat turns into a large bed comfortable enough for reclining on one’s side. At 35 inches in width and with an increased bed length from 80 to 82 inches, the seat is one of the most spacious First Class products in the sky. Both the design language and the colour and material concept signal maximum levels of comfort, taking their cue from automotive interior design when it comes to passenger comfort, spatial configuration and functionality. The design team has imbued these onboard spaces with an aura of tranquillity. Large surfaces and elegantly sweeping lines coupled with warm, modern shades of brown within the seating islands all evoke the ambience of a living room. Cooler grey and metallic tones on the outside, meanwhile, clearly demarcate the private zone from its surroundings – a colour concept that continues into the carpeting to accentuate the impression of a personal cocoon.

Only high-grade materials are permitted to fly First Class. The seat is lined with fine leather, while a new covering technique for the upholstery increases tension in the material, which remains smooth and – even after hours of use – appears pristine. Atmospheric lighting has been discreetly assimilated into the design. Extensive tests were carried out to determine the optimal light colour and intensity. A range of personal storage cubbies in the front entertainment area add surprising touches with their striking interior colours. Elegant tables are integrated into the front of the seating area; they can be extended simply and quietly without the need for any folding mechanism.
