Smart Stretcher

Lenify is a collapsible emergency stretcher that all but eliminates the chances of secondary injuries caused by lifting patients onto the stretcher. The solution: divide the stretcher into three parts to stabilize the upper body, arms/midsection, and lower body. This unique construction makes it possible to “scoop” the individual into the stretcher rather than the traditional “lift and drop” method.

Mercedes-Benz plan will put QR codes on cars to speed up rescues

MercedesBenz wants QR codes on cars to speed up the rescue process

We joke that most people don't like QR codes, but those codes link to a lot of information through one snapshot -- and Mercedes-Benz may just use that efficiency to save lives. The automaker is putting the symbols on vehicles so that emergency crews just need a phone camera scan for easy access to rescue sheets, which are schematics that show where to cut into a wrecked car when recovering trapped passengers. With such immediate knowledge, rescuers don't have to wait for a model confirmation or else risk cutting wires and fuel lines. While we'll initially see the QR codes only in Mercedes-Benz cars made this year and beyond (placed inside the fuel door and on the opposite side B-pillar), the company isn't being selfish: it's refusing to patent its method in the hope that every vehicle manufacturer will quickly embrace the technology.

The Triangle of Life

Life Triangle is a life raft featuring a multi-directional triangular shape so that it doesn’t capsize easily. Apparently the triangular structure prevents the raft from turning over, a fear often associated with smaller rafts. The boat involves automatic inflation and features a movable signal light containing GPS technology. Anything that keeps you safe on the high seas has my vote!

Life Triangle is a 2012 red dot award: design concept winner.

Flying Rescue Lifeguard Drone Could be a Real Life Saver

Looking for a lifeguard that won’t get all out of shape like David Hasselhoff? A research lab in Iran is working on one - a robotic lifeguard that can respond instantly to passengers and crew who fall from ships by flying to their rescue and dropping a life preserver to them.

The flying robot is called Pars and it is ship-based. The quadcopter can be alerted when someone falls overboard, or is pushed overboard. Once it’s launched, Pars scans the area around the boat with a thermal sensor and drops a life preserver to keep them afloat until crew members can get to them. Hopefully the Baywatch theme is playing while all of this is going on.

Right now, the prototype Pars drone can only hold one life preserver ring, but the goal is for the ‘bot to hold up to three, allowing it to respond to multiple people. It’s a great concept and if they can pull it off, this one could save many lives.

Think about how many cruise ships lately have had problems and you start to see how this could be a real winner.

Tinkerball to the Rescue

Inspired by the events of 9/11, designers Jiyoung Choi & Namsun Do created the Tinkerball as a life-saving device for a variety of emergency situations from fires to earthquakes. The equipment uses a controlled cable and handle mechanism to serve as a descending life-line for those trapped in high places and needing to escape. Easily installed in apartments or offices, it’s a great life-saving solution for an often overlooked hazard.

The Hexicopter

Designed for disaster rescue and other squad-based missions, the Hatchet unmanned copter concept utilizes not one, not 2, not 3… but a 6 rotor design that gives it superior maneuverability and mid/low altitude stability beyond that of ordinary helicopters. Modular components can be interchanged for different missions so it’s capable of both surveying areas for preliminary reconnaissance and performing rescues or even fire extinguishments, making it a versatile tool for a variety of operations.

Other on-board equipment includes an infrared scanning imager, instant photography live-feed cameras, and an unmanned control system for operation from the ground.

What the All-Female Avengers Would Look Like

attachment

Sometimes, women feel like they’ve been shortchanged. Looking at the history of mankind, they’re probably right. The latest complaint? Why just one woman on the Avengers team in the film, Scarlett Johansson portraying Black Widow.

So… someone set out to fix that. No, not make an actual movie with an all-female casts. ...

Smoke Detector and Mask in 1

Smoke masks and smoke detectors can mean the difference between life and death in the event of a house fire – so why not combine the two?! The first design of its kind, the TaG mask actually detects smoke itself and emits a sound signal that alerts victims and makes it easier to find in a smokey room. Furthermore, TaG uses flashing LEDs and a built-in sonorous locator to help rescuers evacuate those in danger. Genius! Check out the vid to see how it works!
