Rock-inspired Ottoman stools were also designed to be stacked and played with

The origin of the Balanco stools is a rather interesting one. It was designed as a response to the pandemic, when the entire world was forced to stay at home. Putting home decor at the forefront while also giving kids (and adults) something to play and interact with, the Balanco set of stools takes its inspiration from rocks and boulders, giving you the ability to stack them in different forms and formats, creating art in the process. I call it putting ‘fun’ in ‘funiture’!

The idea for the Balanco stools came from the Japanese practice of stacking pebbles to create towers. While the pebbles mostly consist of rounded forms, designers Lisa Lai and Joel Wong decided that chiseled rock-like shapes would create more visual dynamism while offering a variety of flat surfaces that are ideal for stacking and layering. “As it requires significant patience and calmness to balance the blocks, it serves as one of the practical yet fun solutions for friends and families to enjoy with one another”, say Lisa and Joel. “When it is not used as objects for play, it doubles as stools and tables for adults and children.”

Designers: Lisa Lai and Joel Wong

Although boulder-like, the Balanco poufs are deceptively light, thanks to the foam inside them. The foam blocks are clad with sheets of felt that are stitched together with exposed edges that create the black lines on the boulders, giving them their chiseled, sharp, edgy appearance. This also allows the individual surfaces to remain relatively flat, so they stack on each other rather beautifully.

When not being used as toy blocks to create odd rocky totems, the individual Balanco stools can be used as seats, poufs, or footrests. Their uneven shape means you can orient them in a multitude of ways and height-adjust them accordingly. Although I don’t entirely endorse this, they’ll probably make for rather realistic-looking pillow fights!

The Balanco Stools are a winner of the A’ Design Award for the year 2022.

The Winding side table doubles up as a stool and features an interesting ‘nose’

If you’ve ever even remotely spent time in the design world on Instagram, then you’ve for sure come across Deniz Aktay. His simple, minimal, yet genius furniture pieces have slowly but surely taken the IG world by storm. The success of his designs lies in the fact that they’re oh so simple, elegant, and yet packed with massive functionality. The simplicity will almost make you wonder ‘Why didn’t I think of this?’, but unfortunately for us and luckily for Aktay, no one else can conjure these designs up except him. He’s created wonders – from a unique bookshelf that functions as a side table to a coffee table design with intriguing layers. And, we’re currently drooling over the Winding side table.

Designer: Deniz Aktay

There’s just something about a multifunctional piece of furniture that ticks all the checkboxes for me! Imagine a product that’s been designed to work as a clothing rack and a treadmill. Or a side table that transforms into a chair. Space-saving goals much? That’s the magic of a multifunctional furniture design. It looks like a single product, but functions as more than one! They’re a smart option for our modern urban homes, which tend to be pretty cramped, hence adding multiple bulky and cumbersome furniture designs to them isn’t really an option. But multifunctional pieces that serve a variety of purposes, and solve a bunch of unique problems can be a lifesaver in such situations. And the Winding side table is one such brilliant design.

This minimalistic and warm side table also doubles up as a stool. Aktay’s designs are infamous for doubling up as something or the other and doing so extremely subtly and smartly. The furniture piece is like a continuous piece of plywood folded and bent into varying angles. It artfully curves at the top to create a thick platform that functions either as a side table or a stool, depending upon your mood – whether you want to place your favorite vase or your bum on it.

The curve which is formed to build the main platform of the design is its most stark highlight. You can compare it to a ‘nose’, or you could in fact call it the ‘nose’ of the furniture design. The nose is made using multiple plywood shims to give the impression of a singular piece of plywood that although bent, still maintains a continuous and harmonious form.

The Winding side table has a compact size, which makes it ideal for our modern-day cramped homes, or even the ever-popular tiny homes. You can deftly slide the table/stool into any corner of your home, and it would seamlessly merge with its surroundings owing to its neutral and soothing aesthetics.

Fluff Stack is a fluffy furniture set made from denim waste

There are a few things in life that humans can never get enough of that aren’t food. These include furniture for living spaces and clothes for our bodies. Fortunately, these two classes of products are quite ubiquitous, mostly thanks to manufacturing technologies and cheap materials. Unsurprisingly, mass-produced products aren’t the most sustainable products, and even seemingly innocent textiles have their own dirty laundry, no pun intended, when it comes to the environment. There’s also the matter of wasted unused materials like scraps and overruns that are simply discarded, often at the expense of the planet. Finding a good use for these bits and pieces might not be that easy, but one such artist thought outside the box to turn denim waste into the unlikeliest of new products: pieces of furniture.

Designer: Lenny Stopp

Common fabrics are often dyed using processes and chemicals that tend to be toxic to the environment, making it one of the textile industry’s worst secrets. Simply throwing clothes could still end up harming the planet in the long run, but even their production can be problematic from a sustainability point of view. Some pieces of clothing or fabrics might be recyclable, but scraps and bits of material aren’t so easy to reuse because of their small sizes.

A better solution would be to use them as the base for something else that may not be directly related to the world of textiles and clothing. This three-piece furniture set composed of a side table, a stool, and a lamp is one such example, using denim waste not to simply cover the surface of the furniture as you might expect. Instead, the pieces of denim come together to form the furniture’s core and structure while also giving it a texture and visual that is truly one-of-a-kind.

The idea for Fluff Stack came from the observation that denim pulp is actually very strong. This new kind of material was made by putting denim pieces into an industrial pulp machine and then was mixed with cornstarch and water. The result was a material that looked and felt fluffy but had certain durability to it, allowing it to be pressed into molds to become more rigid shapes.

The ultimate test of the strength of this new kind of material is to use it for products that need to support a lot of weight or withstand rough use. Furniture, of course, is the perfect representative of such products, and, thus, the Fluff Stack series was born. Even without knowing the history behind these art pieces cum functional furniture, Fluss Stack easily captures one’s attention and interest. Rather than straightforward forms, the pieces are composed of blocks of solidified denim pulp arranged in a maze-like combination. The fluffy appearance of their surfaces also makes them stand out as if covered with fur all around.

Fluff Stack probably won’t become a common furniture design, but it does open the doors to what can be done with fabric waste. In an ideal world, nothing really gets wasted, and even scraps can be used as foundations for something else, forming a large part of a circular economy. And apparently, they can also look good, too, which goes a long way in making them attractive as functional decor or fancy furniture.

This modern and minimal multifunctional pet carrier doubles up as a stool for you

There’s a special place in my heart…reserved completely for pet products! Our pets are quite literally our lifelines, and if you own a cat or two like me, then you know most of our days are spent catering to their every whim and fancy. Well-designed, smart, and functional product designs can make your pet’s life easier, more comfortable, and fun! And if they manage to provide some utility to your living space and you, then it’s quite literally the best of both worlds. One such example of an innovative design that caters to the needs of both pets and humans is – Guacal.

Designer: Andrés Cáceres

Designed by Andrés Cáceres, Guacal is a cute pet carrier that seems to double up as a stool for humans! Mimicking a mini stool, Guacal takes on a squarish form with rounded edges. The lower section seems to function as the pet carrier with transparent panels supporting the entire structure,  allowing you to keep an eye on your pet at all times. The upper section features a wooden base, which seems to serve as the seating area for you! Guacal looks sturdy enough to not only support your weight but to carry your pet around wherever you go. If you separate the transparent panels from the main structure, it quickly transforms into a handy stool for you.

Cáceres amped Guacal with a generous size, allowing it to accommodate dogs and cats, of different shapes, sizes and breeds, and not to mention even you!  You can stack multiple Guacals next to each other to create a long and modular seating arrangement. Guacal’s modern and minimal aesthetics ensure that it could perfectly complement any living space or home.

Guacal is the kind of modern, and multifunctional design that most of us need these days. It not only helps you comfortably transport your pet from one location to another, but even let’s you rest on it while you’re waiting in line for the vet to tend to your doggo!

Cross Chair and Stool will have you always saying X marks MY spot

Demeter Fogarasi Cross Chair and Stool 6

An accent chair provides extra seating for reading or quiet time in the home or office areas with more available space. Interior designers may use such a chair to create an attractive focal point in a room that may look dull without it. This furniture piece can also be a place for conversations, but those don’t flow naturally, so you need quirky elements that can make you think or go ‘wow’ to begin and easily create such a mood. It would help if you had something like a chair that makes you stop and think before you sit.

Designer: Demeter Fogarasi

Demeter Fogarasi Cross Chair and Stool 3

Finding the perfect accent chair can be a little challenging. Even with all the options available in furniture stores today, there aren’t many unique and appealing pieces that would catch your guest’s attention. There are a few like those from designer Demeter Fogarasi who thinks furniture can be like “jewels assigning life to spaces,” and can build an atmosphere for people to interact and discuss. His previous work, the Pinsofa, made an impression with striking looks like a giant pincushion, and the Cross Chair and Stool can do that as well, offering life to a corner.

Demeter Fogarasi Cross Chair and Stool 5

Like the other pieces in the collection, the Cross Chair and Stool series blurs the line between functionality and art. It stirs creative imagination and pleasant emotions by using scale manipulation to make the design amusing and playful. The new pair of seats shows a larger-than-life version of a cross (x) which can make you have fun with it—like a shrinking Alice in Wonderland.

Demeter Fogarasi Cross Chair and Stool

The chair and the stool use an X-shaped seat as their base, with cushioning covered in gray wool fabric. The only difference is that the chair also has an X-shaped backrest while the stool is made up of a single “X” only for the seat. Adding support to the seats and keeping them elevated above the ground are four slanted oak legs positioned underneath each point of the X. The wood material offers a neutral tone and warmth to the design, adding a solid structure and a clean look. The sight of the chair and stool will make you ask what spot the X marks.

The fabric-upholstered Cross Chair and Stool appear cozy and comfortable because of the foam padding. The modern form allows anyone to enjoy being imaginative as the simple yet quirky look will have you guessing what would look great with either piece. We’re thinking of a donut pillow to complete a makeshift furniture tic-tac-toe game. The Cross Collection series may be the missing piece in the equation—the equation of a visually pleasing room.

Orange is a modular stool inspired by the fruit of the same name

There are people who just want to have a chair to sit on while doing something, waiting for someone, or for resting. But there are also those who want to have decorative chairs in their homes, either to match their theme or to have some functional conversation pieces lying around. There are of course those that can be comfortably functional but also uniquely designed at the same time. Most of those that are highly decorative don’t have the comfort of the user as a priority though. This new design, inspired by fruit of all things, may be the latter but may also be the former if done right.

Designer: Harry Rigler

This new concept for a stool is inspired by a fruit and that’s where its name also comes from: Orange. The inspiration is not just in the color but even more so on how an orange actually looks. The seat itself is “filleted” like slices of the fruit and comes in a clear, dome hemisphere and also uses a chamfered edge or bevel. It has tripod-like legs as its base which is where the comfort concern comes in as most stools with three legs that I’ve encountered aren’t the most comfortable.

But when it comes to stools looking pretty, this design has it covered. It would look right at home in hipster bars or coffee shops or if your house or office has that kind of vibe, then it’s something that would look right at home. It is also designed to be easily assembled and disassembled and stored if not needed. There are only five parts that you need to figure out which include the dome, the compartments inside the seat, the magnetic lid, the tripod, and the system that holds it all together.

Still, the most important thing for a lot of people when it comes to chairs or stools is if it will be comfortable enough to use. We can’t really tell based on the product renders if it’s something that can be used for a few minutes or an hour or if it’s just something you sit on so you can experience sitting on an orange or take a picture of you sitting on a fruit-inspired stool.

Bond bench concept design opens to reveal two stools with storage underneath

Bond Stool 2022

James Bond.–we’re confident that’s what came to your mind immediately after learning about the name of this stool. Well, this doesn’t have anything to do with Agent 007, but this kind of furniture piece will have you and your partner bond like there’s no tomorrow.

This is just a stool, but its particular purpose is to make two persons live in unity. How? You open the stool system and separate the parts to seat two persons. Some people will probably not understand the point because the stools are too close, but the Bond can be perfect for couples always on the go.

Designer: Ricardo Sá

Bond 2022 Designer

If you and your partner love going out, you can sit together on the stools while you wear your shoes and before you head out the door. Bond is just to be closer with one another because, you know, some couples just can get enough of each other.

The Bond stool system also features some storage space inside. You can put anything inside, like maybe your shoes or your laptop. Likewise, you can probably put there your purse or just about anything you don’t want to forget.

Bond 2022 Design

Bond 2022 Form

Bond 2022 Details

The Bond is mainly made of wooden material, so you know it’s durable enough to withstand the test of time. The seat material appears to be cork so that it can be comfortable. When closed, Bond looks more like a bench or a horse saddle. Of course, you’d only be sitting on the Bond for a few seconds or minutes, but you would be guaranteed comfort.

Bond 2022 Structure

Bond is a stool that’s been designed for sharing and storage. This furniture piece can greet people coming into your home and can be an instant conversation starter. When closed, others will see it as more of a bench for the entryway, but it turns out to be stools for two persons. It’s an example of a space-saving furniture item that we like to see more in the future.

Bond Chair 2022

Bond’s aesthetics is minimalist, like anything Japanese or Scandinavian. It’s the kind of furniture piece that is now trendy these days. We highly doubt people will ever get tired of such aesthetics because simple and neutral designs are timeless.

The cork material makes any product or object unique. The choice of cork especially in home goods strikes the balance between sustainability and practicality. Such products have already been designed to prove that sustainable material is here to stay. There’s another cork that makes for a sustainable future. More cork products have been introduced like modern sneakers and cork headphones.

Rice Husk stool uses eco-friendly, agriculture-based materials

Since I’m a certified bookworm, I’m always on the lookout for recommended reading chairs. Of course, the first thing I look for is something that’s comfortable so I can spend hours sitting on it and devouring my latest read. There are also those that may appeal to me because of the design although I probably can’t sit that long on it even though it’s a well-crafted kind of chair. If the concept proposes to use eco-friendly materials, that’s another selling point. Well, if it eventually becomes something to be sold.

Designer: You-Hau Wu

Agriculture is not something that’s not necessarily associated with furniture. But for this designer that was looking for materials for sustainable designs, agricultural waste, specifically rice husk, became his inspiration and material. So the design of the reading stool became rice-inspired as well, with the round shapes of the actual chair seat and the stand itself giving off a “harmonious emotion” between the bionic design and the human who will be sitting on it.

When it comes to sustainable materials, he proposes using a mix of the rice husk and carbon, breaking them down and mixing the materials together and then using perfusion molding to shape it into the final chair design. The seat surface itself is made from braided straw but with the rice husk used as the base for the cushion. At the bottom of the stool, the straw is used as well. This brings the idea of sustainable design full circle, so to speak.

Design-wise, the stool looks like a sculpture with an agricultural spin to it. But as a reading chair, it doesn’t seem to look like something that you would sit in for a long period of time. Even though the cushion may make it more breathable and comfortable, the fact that it doesn’t have something to rest your back on may not make it an ideal chair for reading. Well, unless you put the rice husk stool against a wall of course.

OO STOOL x PLASTICIET is one colorful and sustainably-designed flat pack furniture piece

OO STOOL x PLASTICIET Limited Edition Designer

The OO Stool entered our consciousness a couple of years ago before the pandemic hit. It made an impression that it was flat-packed better than any Ikea stool and didn’t need any screws.

The studio behind the OO Stool has teamed up with another group to develop a new version. Meet the OO Stool X Plasticiet. The limited-edition series is a fresh take on the flat-pack stool. It’s a more sustainable version as it is made of plastic waste.

Designer: 56 Hours

OO STOOL x PLASTICIET Limited Edition Series

The Reduce, Reuse, Recycle campaign is going places. 56 Hours Studio came up with the product using material from a chocolate factory. Specifically, polycarbonate molds used for the chocolates in the factory have been used. The molds were gathered, shredded, melted, and then compressed into solid sheets. The company Plasticiet produced the material post-industrial plastic waste.

The OO Stool X Plasticiet can be flat for packaging and transportation. It can also be considered by Ikea like the original OO stool. The latter was also considered environment-friendly as it was made using CNC from different kinds of materials like wood, bamboo, plastic, single board, and reclaimed doors.

OO STOOL x PLASTICIET Limited Edition Where to Buy

The OO Stool X Plasticiet is the same as the original version except for the material. The collab with Plasticiet resulted in this furniture item that helps reduce waste. This project aimed to make a new edition of the OO stool, which was made possible with Plasticiet.

Like the original version, this one doesn’t need any tool to assemble—only the hammer that is cut from the same sheet. You don’t even need to use nails or screws here. It’s also a flat-pack design for easy transport and storage.

OO STOOL x PLASTICIET Limited Edition Where to Buy OO STOOL x PLASTICIET Limited Edition Features

The material is almost new and shows us that plastic and other materials can be reused. But, of course, they need to pass a different process. The flatpack stool comes with a beautiful, colorful pattern. The 56 Hours Design Studio made this edition as they reimagined ways to use and reuse plastic material. There is potential in used plastic, and the flatpack stool isn’t the only one. Expect more furniture pieces and items will be made with plastic material.

Stools serve different purposes and they can be used in different places at home and outdoors. We have seen other interesting designs like the Mini Stools by Napp Studio and that laser-cut steel stool that looks a lot like a parked spaceship from a sci-fi movie. The Front Stool’s intuitive design allowed it for more functions. This OO Stool is somewhat similar to That Stool for its flat-pack design.

This set of Mini Stools show off modern and contemporary style

Napp Studio Mini Stop

Stools aren’t exactly an important fixture in most homes but people buy them because they serve many purposes. You use them for casual seating or maybe to work as a stand when you want to reach something high.

The Mini Stools by Napp Studio are modern versions of the stool chairs usually seen in Asia. Stools are common in everyday settings where people gather to talk and just be with one another to catch up on stories. These stools are ready for another round of stories wherever you are in the world.

Designer: Aron TSANG and Natalie KO

Napp Studio Mini Stop

The small stools are redesigned into something more multi-functional and contemporary. It’s also undeniable they have a major aesthetic appeal. The seats don’t look the same as each differs from the rest. Napp Studio knows contemporary design and can deliver stools using three kinds of solid wood.

The Mini Stools appear they are made using different objects. They’re just made of wood in different shapes and sizes. The natural wood finish is used and complemented by green paint on some parts.

Each stool is designed after a word: lean, tread, lay, and stamp. Looking at every piece is like looking at what could have been the design process of the creators. Only one stool has a round seat, while the three others appear square but in different styles.

Napp Studio Mini Stop

Napp Studio Mini Stop

There are other stool designs we found as interesting as the Mini Stools. We showed you furniture designs that prove stools are better than chairs for posture. The laser-cut stool looks like a parked spaceship, while the Front Stool boasts an intuitive design that allows it to work beyond as an entryway seat.

We found the 360-degree rotating ergonomic stool environment-friendly. We also enjoyed looking at the oddly satisfying stool design using just three interlocking strips of wood. In many ways, the Mini Stools set reminds us of the accordion-shaped seat but without playing a musical note.

Napp Studio Mini Stop

The Mini Stool isn’t anything like the Eulji-ro Stool, but they both make gatherings happen. People who love to be together will need options to be comfortable. Such stools will be of optimum use for hours as long as people talk and enjoy each other’s company.

Napp Studio Mini Stop

Stools are timeless and the Mini Stools can last forever. Well, not forever, but it’s durable enough to last a lifetime. The designers give the ubiquitous stool a modern and contemporary look. The Mini Stools can be mistaken for a sculpture installation if you just leave them somewhere.
