Home Lohas brings hydroponic plantation to your living room

While running between booths at Computex earlier this month, we were momentarily distracted by these vegetable boxes (maybe it was lunch time as well). As it turned out, this product was launched by Taiwan-based Home Lohas around the same time as when the expo started. The company pitches its hydroponic gardening appliance -- so the vegetables rely on nutritious water instead of soil -- as a hassle-free, low-power solution for growing your own greens, plus it's apparently the only solution in the market that doesn't need water circulation. With its full spectrum LED light, air pump and timers, harvest time can apparently be reduced by about 30 percent. It's simply a matter of filling up the water tank, adding the necessary nutrients and placing the seeded sponge on the tray (the package includes three types of organic fertilizers and some seeds).

The only downside is that this system costs NT$15,800 (about US$530) in Taiwan, and for some reason, it'll eventually be priced at US$680 in other markets. If that's too much, then stay tuned for a half-size model that's due Q4 this year.

Outdoor Garden Sink

outdoor garden sink Outdoor Garden Sink
Having an outdoor sink in your yard can be a super handy thing for cleaning hands, garden tools, rinsing vegetables you just picked, and potting plants. This sleek Outdoor Garden Sink doesn’t require any plumbing as it both holds and hooks up to your garden hose. The work surface slides open and closed to reveal a sink complete with soap dish and drain stopper.

In the center of the hose reel is a compartment with a door that you can use to hold nozzles, work gloves, or anything else. The Outdoor Garden Sink either mounts to a wall (or fence or deck) near your faucet or a separate wheeled wooden work station cart that holds it is available separately. Wash your hands outside- no more doing the “open the back door with your pinky cause your hands are so dirty” maneuver.

Sustainable Cultivation Units

Hakan Gürsu’s Living Pots are a series of thoughtfully produced planters for the urban gardener who’s conscious of their carbon footprint.  Composed of 100% recyclable and reused wood and metal, they make use of lumber scraps that would otherwise be thrown out or burned after truncation. With a minimal number of parts, each unit is flat-pack ready and easy to assemble. Better yet, they can be nested to create vertical gardens where space is limited. Check out the vid to see how it’s done —>

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle Chia Pet

Matt of Dinosaur Dracula scored this totally radical Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle Chia Pet. Yes, a TMNT Ch-ch-ch-chia Pet. Because nothing says “Cowabunga, dude!” like a house plant. Matt says he purchased it from Toys R Us, but at this point is doesn’t seem to be available online. Which is a real shame. I mean, as bad as I want one of these things, I’m not trying to actually leave the house to get it. It’s a crazy, sick world out there! I boarded up the windows and doors a looong time ago. Sure it gets a little stuffy with all the cats, but after a while you get used to it. In fact, I’ve grown to like the stench. My roommate? Oh, he moved out a while back. He escaped through an airvent!

This Lawn Dinosaur Knows How to Dress For Every Occassion

Redditor Sarcasticonomist and his wife have a lawn dinosaur named Dug that they dress up for different holidays. They purchased Dug from a landscaping supply company, but they make all of the costumes themselves. Dug can be spotted in front of their home in Redwood City, California usually sporting a different seasonal outfit, like an Easter Bunny costume, football uniform, Santa hat, or Halloween costume. While you might expect uptight neighbors to complain, the family actually receives a lot of positive feedback from neighbors who enjoy seeing Dug’s various outfits. It’s too soon to tell whether or not lawn dinosaurs will be the new garden gnomes, but one can only hope.

A Wearable Potted Plant

Etsy seller Colleen Jordan makes Wearable Potted Plants. The acrylic 3D printed pot is worn around your neck on a necklace. In it you can carry a flower, sprout, or succulent. Whatever that is! To be honest, I’m not super good at the whole plant thing. I’ve got a rough enough time trying to keep myself alive, I can’t be worried about taking care of a damn plant. All that watering, making sure it’s getting the right amount of sunlight, giving it enough attention, teaching it the ways of the world… It’s just too much responsibility!

Doodad Reminds You To Water Your Plants

This is Flower Power, a little device you stick in your house or garden plant’s soil. It comes with a free app that informs you of sunlight received, temperature and humidity of the soil, and if your plant needs watering. Ooh, if I was involved with the process, Flower Power would cry “I’m dyiiiiiing!” to remind you that your plants are shriveling up and need some damn water. Seriously though, are we so distracted that we actually need our smartphones to remind us when to take care of our plants? Yes. The answer’s yes. Personally, I’ve got 111 floors and tons of employees on Tiny Tower and I’m forever having to hire and fire, evict and replace residents, stock and restock every damn shop I’ve got. It’s pretty much a full-time job. Ugh, if only my mom could understand that I’m more or less gainfully employed!

Sweet Side Of Gardening

The Sweet Pot is an innovative plant pot design where the bottom basin acts as a growth patch for extra grass. Essentially the design takes care of excessive watering and drainage at the same time. More like the extra water acts like a feed for the grass patch at the bottom, hence no drains required. The Sweet Slide is a tool that aids watering the plant comfortably. Super cute and super efficient!
