Autonomous Life Vest

The Revival Vest is a self-inflating life jacket that uses Footfalls and Heartbeats smart fabric technology to monitor respiration and physiological changes such as drowning. The fabric detects changes in circumference and stretch around the chest while the diver suppresses breathing. If the wearer blacks out, the body becomes limp and life vest is triggered to inflate and raise the body to the surface for rescue.

The life jacket is one of the most significant humanitarian designs in history and even in its simplest form it is responsible for saving countless lives each year. Designer Winslow Harte expands on its versatility by applying a variety of modern technologies that specifically aims to help those in danger of tsunamis. Embedded LED lights and a built-in GPS beacon make search and rescue efforts easier and a material blend of Duralite grid-weave, mesh pockets and Velcro flaps ensure its durability and ease of use.

Army seeking proposals for casualty-carrying UAVs

Combat is a grizzly business, and despite the best efforts of medical evacuation crews, it's not always feasible to send rescue teams into the fray. The US Army is seeking to address this with "autonomous vertical takeoff and landing (VTOL) unmanned aircraft systems (UAS)" (read: drones) for dropping off medical supplies and picking up injured troops. In its latest request for research and development proposals, the Army calls not for new tools, but for the repurposing of current aircraft to do the job. Preferred candidates in the already unmanned class include the A160 Hummingbird and the K-MAX, while one of the suggestions for remote-control modification is the infamous Black Hawk. Makes the AR.Drone seem a little wimpy, doesn't it?

Delorme’s inReach two-way satellite communicator gets iOS support, sends iPhone texts from Timbuktu (video)

If you're an iPhone or iPad owner, you might have been disappointed that the Delorme inReach two-way GPS communicator launched with app support only for Android users. That's fine if you're trekking with a Casio G'zOne Commando, but not so hot if you're of the Apple mindset and get stranded canoeing down the Amazon. Thankfully, Delorme just posted an iOS version of its Earthmate app that will let your Cupertino-designed gear send either text messages or SOS beacons through a paired-up inReach unit. As before, the handheld relies on its own GPS positioning and embedded locations in messages to keep friends and rescue crews updated anywhere the device can get an Iridium satellite lock-in. It'll still cost you $250 for the device and $10 per month to stay linked up; even so, there's a real chance you'll be texting your friends from your iPhone in Mali, assuming you haven't had to call a rescue helicopter first.

The compact Solar Cooker kit can be shipped in large quanities, and can be assembled easily by nearly anyone in a matter of seconds. Simply unfold the mirrored, metal dish to reflect concentrated sunlight to the included cooking pots to heat food quickly, efficiently and safely.

Inspired by his own compassion  for abandoned animals, designer Gyeongwan Koo created the design as an effort to give temporary shelter to cats, dogs or even  birds that need it. Simply push the pre-cut U and O shapes, fold, and voila!

Off-Road Ambulance

The RT 112 rescue vehicle was design to provide access to emergency help even in remote parts of the world where terrain can be difficult. The project combines modern off-roading technology like adjustable air-bag suspension, a tough polycarbonate Makrolon shell and even a telescopic light tower for viewing obstacles in front of the vehicle.
