Adjustable Height Computer Desk Casemod Deserves a Standing Ovation

We’ve seen a couple of desks that double as computer cases, but this one takes things to the next level. Unsurprisingly, its proud and very skilled creator also calls it The Next Level.

next level adjustable height standing desk by pascal de greef

The Next Level was made by Cooler Master forum member Pascal de Greef as an entry to the 2012 Cooler Master mod competition. The desk’s height can be adjusted with the push of a button; same goes for the two monitors. Pascal didn’t mention the specs of his computer but it seems like a heavyweight itself, what with two GPUs, a water-cooling system and four huge cooling fans. I wonder how noisy it gets under heavy load. Check out the finished product below:

If you’re into building you really should check out Pascal’s thread at the Cooler Master Forum because he has uploaded a ton final and work in progress images. Note that aside from the lifting mechanisms, the table legs and the column that supports the monitors, Pascal fabricated everything with his own two hands (and some heavy machinery). This is clearly the work of a master craftsman.

Sandstone PC Casemod is Positively Prehistoric

We’ve featured some unusual casemods around here over the years, but the well seemed to have been drying up until recently. With computers becoming more compact, and more all-in-one devices, there’s not as much of a customization scene anymore. So when I stumble across an interesting mod these days, I have to jump on it – even one that was actually made all the way back in 2004.

stone age pc mod

This particular mod may not have the latest and greatest in PC tech on board, but that’s not the point. In fact, I figure that this computer carved from a chunk of sandstone deserves some stone age tech to go along with it. It was built by artist Aram Bartholl out of a chunk of sandstone, measuring approximately 19″ x 23″ x 16″, and sports an achingly old-school 386DX40 PC motherboard. At least it’s easy to upgrade the memory with it sticking out of the front like that.

Rounding out the archaic design is a black-and-white GoldStar computer monitor (did you know that LG used to be GoldStar?), a 3.5″ floppy drive and a clunky old PS/2 keyboard. If you watch the video footage above, you’ll even get to see it playing the PC classic, Prince of Persia.

Captain America Xbox 360 Casemod: Steve RRoDgers

Zachariah Perry Cruse aka Zim Props wowed us before with his Iron Man Xbox 360 mod. His latest masterpiece is based on the other leading Avenger, the Sentinel of Liberty, the Super Soldier, the – let’s see, what else does the Marvel Wiki say about him – Yeoman America? Spider-King? What the hell? Comics, you weird.

As always, Zach is keeping his Forge-like talents a secret and doesn’t say much about how he built this wonderful case mod, only that there is a gap in between the shield and the ventilating holes in the case to keep the console cool.

Throw a mighty email to Zach if you want him to make you a similar mod. By “similar” I hope he doesn’t mean he’ll make you a U.S. Agent Xbox 360.

Macintosh Portable Hackintosh: Mac OS X on a PC Dressed as a Mac

The Macintosh Portable was Apple’s first battery-powered portable computer. Released in 1989, it weighed 16lbs., had a 16MHz CPU, a black and white screen and lead-acid batteries, hence its nickname, “Macintosh Luggable.” People had to pay $6,500 for the curse of owning this darned thing. Which is why I find this hack to be so funny.

macintosh portable hackintosh by patrick blampied

Yes, that Macintosh Portable has a color screen and is running Mac OS X. Patrick Blampied used the hardware from his old Toshiba NB100 netbook to make this modern miracle possible. In other words, it’s a Hackintosh. Blampied also painstakingly rewired and soldered a Dell keyboard to a USB controller for this project. The classic Apple mouse has an optical mouse in its guts, though it still only has one button. Finally, in place of the lead-acid batteries Blampied put the battery from a cordless drill.

The only thing this computer has over Apple’s current lineup is that sweet rainbow logo. Blampied said he’ll upload more pictures and information about his hack on his blog.

Self-declared hipster builds Macintosh Portable case mod, reckons it goes well with skinny jeans (video)

If size and weight aren't nearly as important as turning heads at your local coffee shop, then why bother with today's banal hardware if you've got a perfectly good Macintosh Portable lying around? One nostalgic modder with a disregard for luggability has updated Apple's very first laptop to run OS X, creating what he calls "a great café computer." Obviously, the software isn't all that's changed, as behind the white plastic hides the internals of a Toshiba NB100 netbook sacrificed for the project. The keyboard has been painstakingly rewired through a USB controller, and the ball mouse now houses an optical cousin which connects via the original cable. A cordless drill battery powers the thing, which has also been gifted with all the mod cons -- WiFi and USB connectivity -- to make it pretty usable. If you're interested in build pics, the tech-savvy hipster promises to post them soon at the source link below, and for a tour of the finished article, a video awaits you beyond the fold.

Ben Heck Shows You How to Build an Xbox 360 Laptop

I lack any of the skills you need to make cool mods and DIY projects of just about any type. That is certainly not true when it comes to modder Ben Heck. This geek took his hobby of building modded consoles and other items and turned it into his own web series. On the latest episode of his show, Heck returns to his console-modding roots showing us how to build one of his portable Xbox 360s.

xboxultra

Heck’s latest Xbox 360 Slim laptop has a 16-inch LED backlit display and a custom-routed and 3D printed enclosure housing the electronics from the gaming console. I’m not sure how easy something like this would be to pull off for your average DIY person with nothing but everyday tools. The fancy custom enclosure that Heck made required a computer-controlled router and a 3D printer, so unless you have ready access to those tools, you might be a little behind the curve. You can decide how difficult it might be by checking out the entire episode below:

I guess you could build something out of plywood to put your own portable console mod together. Still, even if you can’t pull off such a mod on your own, it’s very cool to see an Xbox 360 that can be played anywhere you happen to be – assuming an electrical outlet is nearby.

Gold Macbook Air: More Than Worth Its Weight in Gold

The first version of the MacBook Air was prohibitively expensive, particularly because it was quite underpowered. The 2012 edition is much more practical, and with the release of the 11″ version, is more affordable as well. Computer Choppers is here to tip the scale back to the other end with their 24 carat gold plated MacBook Air.

Steampunk NES Delivers a Knock-Out Punch

Look at this beautiful console. It may look like it’s from the 1890′s, but it is just another modern mod that is beautifully done. And no, it doesn’t run on steam (though it would be cool if it did.)

Redditor Andrew5785′s nephew wanted his old top loading NES-101, so being the nice guy that he is, he decided to add some steampunk style and gifted it to his nephew, who loves steampunk stuff. Damn. Will you be my Uncle? I’m officially asking for your SNES.

I love the details. Now Andrew’s nephew can play games and pretend he’s in some Jules Verne submarine, while imagining that steam is oozing out of his console. Lucky kid. You did an amazing job, Andrew. Check out the full build gallery here.

Atari 2600s get PC innards, 22,857 times more processing power

Atari 2600s get PC innards, 22,857 times more processing power

Atari games redesigned in HTML 5 may bring back a flood of nostalgia, but they leave out a key part of the gaming experience: the classic hardware. Hard Drives Northwest filled that void by gutting a limited number of authentic Atari 2600s and stuffing them with modern PC components. Packing a Core i7 3.4GHz processor, the retro console now boasts 22,857 times more processing power than it did in its heyday, according to Microsoft's calculations -- more than enough oomph to handle the recent remakes. Other internals include 8GB of RAM, a 120GB SSD and a Radeon HD 6570 graphics card with 1GB of video memory. With support for USB 3.0 and 2.0, eSATA, DisplayPort, DVI and HDMI, the system is well stocked on the connectivity front. Finally, the signature of Atari founder Nolan Bushnell acts as the cherry atop the faux wood grain-toting package. While the souped-up machines aren't up for sale, a pair of them are slated for a giveaway. Glamour shots and the full set of specs await you at the source.
