Star Wars Lightsaber Umbrellas: Saberellas?

If you have been reading Technabob for a while, you might recall back in 2012 when we mentioned some Star Wars lightsaber umbrellas that had surfaced. When these things first hit the market, they went for over $60 each, which is way too much money if you ask me. Our favorite seller of all things geeky, ThinkGeek, now has its hands on three versions of the Star Wars Lightsaber Umbrella, and they are much more affordable this time out.

ThinkGeek has the Darth Vader, Obi-wan, and Yoda versions of the lightsaber umbrella for $35.99(USD). That is money well spent to stay dry. The shaft of the umbrella is anodized in the correct color for the blade of the saber when you open it.

The Yoda version is green, Vader style is red, naturally, and the Obi-Wan version has a blue shaft. Each of the hilts is styled after the lightsabers used in the films. The umbrellas also have a silk-screened logo for the Jedi or Imperial forces and come with a shoulder holder.

These won’t protect you from ice storms on Hoth, but they might be good for those rainy days in the swamps of Dagobah.

Sabertron Swords Keep Players Honest By Keeping Score

I have always thought swords were pretty cool. In fact, I used to take fencing, if only because no one taught kendō in my area. If you have ever picked up a stick and started a mock sword fight with someone, you know that your foes tend to become liars quickly. Even if their knuckles are bleeding, they will deny being hit by your sword/stick.

sabertrontbmagnify

Sabertron is working on a new sword fighting system that takes away the ability for your opponent to lie in this way. The swords keep track of hits and can tell the difference between a person and another sword. According to its makers:

Sabertron uses wireless communications to determine when two swords have clashed. If a player strikes the ground, the microcontroller can ignore the strike because the sword is tilted down at an angle. If a player strikes a tree, a bystander, or the player’s self, the microcontroller will detect those objects as the opponent. This is a limitation and players must agree to be honest. This limitation will be removed in follow-on products that support Melee Mode, by utilizing proximity detection circuits. It is possible that the initial reward product supports this mode, depending on the production changes to bring Sabertron to the masses, but is not guaranteed.

Each sword comes complete with sound effects and LED lights that count down the points until victory or defeat. Initially, you’ll only be able to get versions looks like a lightsaber, but if they should exceed $500,000 in orders, they’ll also offer a medieval blade. Down the road, they hope to release accessories that allow for multiplayer melee battles.

If you want a pair, you’ll need to pledge at least $125(USD) over on Kickstarter to get in on the sword-swinging action when they launch. Delivery is estimated for Fall 2014.

This Infographic Teaches You to Build a Lightsaber

Silly me. I’ve been waiting all my life for a Jedi Master to show up and teach me how to build a lightsaber. Turns out all I needed was this infographic from electronics supplier Newark. Well, it will build you a lightsaber replica, not an actual lightsaber, but it is still awesome.

It just takes a few basic tools and pieces of hardware. Before you know it, you will be swinging away in a saber battle. This is a great way for people who are just getting started with projects like this to build something really cool.

Saberforge Double-Bladed Staff: As Popularized by Arthday Aulmay

We’ve already seen Etsy seller Philip Isherwood’s Saberforge Battle Sabers, a series of very original prop weapons. While I’m still researching how he came up with his utterly unique designs, Philip already upped the ante. He’s now making Saberforge Staffs, which have not one but two blades. This changes everything. This guy is a genius. A genius I say!

Philip is well aware that his props are used by people who like to play both heroes and villains, so he again fired up his innovation engine and came up with two distinct designs. The Decimator Staff, shown above, looks unmistakably evil, while the Grand Master Staff, shown below, is for those who (pretend to) fight for good. Philip’s imagination truly knows no bounds.

Seriously though, these seem like durable and beautiful props. Not only do they have aircraft-grade aluminum handles, they also have force- and motion-sensitive sound effects, meaning they play appropriate audio effects when swung and when their blades clash. Speaking of clashing, the staff’s coupler can be removed if you want to dual wield or share a saber with a friend. Each staff comes with two sets of blades, a pair of 36″ blades and a pair of 32″ blades. A 10w dual-color LED on each hilt provides the lighting.

If you’re ready to take your pretend interstellar armed conflicts to the next level, head to Philip’s Etsy shop Saberforge. The staffs cost $850 (USD) each.
