Red Dot Award: Product Design 2015 – Participate Now!

For those who followed my wrap up of the 2014 Xiamen International Design Business Week will connect with the kinda exposure that Red Dot Award: Product Design winners get. So, besides winning a prestigious award, the designers also are privy to massive promos via media, exhibitions and live events. Call it the whole nine yards. The icing of course, is the validation got from the esteemed jury, who are contemporary peers and are always looking for the next big bang!

In February, the international jury of independent design experts will evaluate every product – without online pre-judging. The team comprises of experienced Red Dot jurors such as Hideshi Hamaguchi, inventor of the USB flash drive, Tangerine founder Martin Darbyshire, IT design consultant Gordon Bruce and also newly acquired experts like Wen-long Chen, CEO of the Taiwan Design Center.

Why You Should Participate

  1. This year, the competition offers for the first time more than 30 categories for submitting industrially manufactured innovations – among them are the new categories “materials and surfaces”, “watches” and “musical instruments”.
  2. The winning designs and the people behind are honored at a festive awards ceremony in Essen, Germany, hometown of the Red Dot and of the Red Dot Design Museum, which is the worldwide largest exhibition of contemporary design.
  3. The Red Dot Gala on 29 June 2015 will, of course, be hosted by Red Dot founder and CEO Professor Dr. Peter Zec.

Deadlines

World Design Rankings

Welcome 2015, the world of design is awaiting your take on the future. Like Karim Rashid once said that he has learnt to embrace change from a very early age, we too should brace ourselves for change in the early part of the year. Syncing in with changes, is the A’ Design Award & Competition and along with it are the World Design Rankings. We are sure you’d be curious to know if your country is leading the ranks, so we have for you the list after the jump.

More details on the rankings can be found here. If you’d like to participate in the A’ Design Award & Competition, then more details can be found here.

The objective of the world design rankings is to contribute to global design culture via culture and highlighting good design. The rankings give an overview of the design potentials of countries worldwide by highlighting their creative strengths, design weaknesses and available opportunities.

Ten New countries are included in the 2014 rankings: Saudi Arabia, Indonesia, Belarus, Sri Lanka, Norway, Cyprus, Albania, Qatar and Colombia. Top 10 remained the same compared to last year except for China ascending in the ladder from 8th to 7th position, which moved Brazil a step back.

Red Dot Awards: Design Concept and Yanko Design Party Hard – Part 2

Time and again you have passively participated in the Red Dot Awards via the editorials and updates of the Awards Night. This year, Yanko Design and the Singapore team of Red Dot Awards: Design Concept, decided to do things differently. I had a team trail me, while I went about capturing the essence of the event and talking to the winners. It was delightful to see the sparkle in their eyes and the jubilant smiles. What struck me the most were Lucid Design’s Amit Mirchandani’s words – “Winning a Red Dot definitely gives you that edge, it makes a difference.” Hit the jump for the video and to know more.

Red Dot Awards: Design Concept and Yanko Design Party Hard – Part 1

As the jury member of the 2014 Red Dot Awards: Design Concept, Yanko Design’s Takashi Yamada was asked why he focuses on concept design so much. His answer was simple, finished products are not as innovative as concept designs. It’s all about the imagination and inspiration that goes behind creating a great product. The key words – inspiration, imagination and innovation can lead to path-breaking Product Design. As always, we were there at Singapore to cover the 2014 Awarding Ceremony.

This year we are doing things differently, instead of filing in a recap report, YD and Red Dot Awards have compiled four short videos that capture the essence of ceremony and get you great interviews from the award-winners themselves. Inspiring stories that teach us how dedication and focus can lead to great success. Today’s episode is a brief intro and includes great words of wisdom from Arman Emami of Emami Design and of course Dr. Peter Zec. Take a look…

About Red Dot Awards: Design Concept

Identifying good design since 1955, the Red Dot Design Award received more than 16,500 applications from 70 countries in 2014. Making the competition one of the biggest and most prestigious design awards worldwide.
