When Babies Attack, Only Garbage Men Are Unafraid

I like a good prank, especially when its played on unsuspecting people on the streets. something about strangers getting the crap scared out of them in public makes me smile. A new movie is coming out soon called Devil’s Due, and to promote the film Thinkmodo created a horrific baby to prank passersby.

The creepy animatronic baby was put inside a stroller. Both stroller and baby are remote controlled and the little devil can pop up and shoot milk out of its mouth Linda Blair style. You have to watch the video yourself, so I won’t give any more away:

Needless to say, people scare easily. That is until the devil baby rolls up on the trash man, he doesn’t even blink. Clearly, he is someone that has seen it all.

Samsung’s Pebble-shaped Smart Control: Easier to Lose Between the Couch Cushions

Samsung is always thinking about style as well as function. Now they have set their sights on the good old remote control. The company’s all new Smart Control will come with Smart TVs that are scheduled to be released this year. It is basically shaped like a pebble.

This new pebble shape is designed to give you a better grip and it is 80 percent smaller than a regular remote. This small remote also has voice and motion control integration, along with 26 tactile buttons.

So basically they have shrunk the remote and styled it up a bit. Kind of looks like one of those small Star Trek phasers to me. We’ll learn more about Samsung’s new remotes and the TVs that go with them at CES 2014 next week.

Paper airplanes finally get the smartphone remote control they deserve

Thank you, PowerUp. Apparently the last time we had the opportunity to write about paper airplanes was back in 2011, when a Seattle doctor built a tiny one using a da Vinci surgical robot. This time out, it's a Kickstarter project that brings smartphone control to the notoriously staid word of paper airplanes. The gadget's setup is pretty simple, all said. At the front is a Bluetooth module and battery, while the back contains the propeller and rudder. Build a paper airplane, attach the PowerUp up and boom, you've got RC aircraft you can control with your smartphone. Creator Shai Goitein has taken the project to Kickstarter in an attempt to score $50,000 in funding. A pledge of $30 will get one of these little fliers in your hands, come May of next year. That's plenty of time to practice your folding skills.

Phantom 2 Vision: The Flying Quadricopter Camera That is Actually Useful

The concept of the Phantom 2 Vision is not one of complete novelty. I will admit that. The Phantom 2 Vision by DJI, however, has something that the other quadricopter cameras do not: solid execution. (And great mobile integration.)

This RC copter will allow you to get the perfect bird’s-eye view photos, skyline images, and more! Plus, for those of us who just think that autonomous flying objects are cool, the “Return to Home” feature promises an awesome experience, as well as a safe landing at the takeoff spot.

Stream HD video to your mobile device, which can be mounted on the Phantom 2 Vision’s controller, and use that camera feed to steer the drone and take pictures and video! It comes with its very own 14 megapixel camera, which can record 1080/30p or 1080/60i video.

What’s the range on this baby? Well, you can stream video from up to 980 feet away, which is awesome, and I don’t think you’d want to fly your new $1,200 toy much farther away than that anyway. While it does have the “Return to Home” feature, it does not have the “stop my loser friends from sending my $1,200 flying into a pond” feature.

It’s also got automatic stabilization to help you fly, and the ability to tilt the camera remotely. Battery life is rated at 25 minutes, and you can easily swap batteries too.

If, like me, this is out of your price range, just do what I do: buy an Otterbox case, press the record button on your phone, and launch it as far as possible. Gimball Flying Drone Is Designed to Deftly Navigate Difficult Locations

An interesting flying robot has been created called Gimball that is specifically designed to be able to crash and recover quickly. The creators of the robot designed it to be used in situations that might be hazardous for humans. The flying device has a spherical roll cage mounted on pivots that allows the helicopter to stay upright, as well as to handle cramped spaces where other drones would likely crash.

The flying drone was designed and built by a team in Switzerland from the Ecole Polytechnique Federerale de Lausanne (EPFL). In-flight it resembles a mosquito crashing into things and moving on without missing a beat. Co-creator of the flying robot, Adrien Briod, told the BBC that Gimball was partly inspired by the way insects fly.

The little drone has a gyroscopic system including an accelerometer of the type used in smartphones to allow it to know which way is up and stay in the correct orientation. The drone is 13-inches in diameter and weighs 13 ounces with the capability of lifting 30 g. Currently the robot is remote controlled, but the company hopes to integrate features allowing it to fly autonomously.

The robot is intended to be able to be deployed in disaster situations such as entering buildings that are burning or hazardous materials are leaking.

Tricks Done Right: Flying R/C Quadcopter Ghost with Glowing Eyes

October is the month when pranksters let loose, where almost everyone becomes a victim of their sometimes funny and often scary pranks and practical jokes. Taking things one step further is Alton Porter. He built a flying remote-controlled ghost that has glowing eyes that definitely adds to the scare factor.

Alton’s probably having a few laughs right now as he flies his R/C ghost around for a test run before unleashing it onto unsuspecting trick-or-treaters come October 31st. If you know him personally or live in the same neighborhood, you might want to avoid his house if you don’t want the living daylights scared out of you or your kid…or not, because in hindsight, that’s what makes Halloween fun in the first place.

Anki Drive: Artificial Intelligence Brings Video Game Racing to the Real World

Mini remote control cars that know how to drive themselves by using artificial intelligence? YES.

Think that this isn’t the greatest thing ever? What if I told you that Apple gave Anki the stage at one of their most high-profile tech keynotes of the year? Now that I have your attention, take a look at what is sure to be one of the most revolutionary toys ever brought to market.

Anki Drive allows you to, using your iOS device, race remote control cars against your friends. But, in addition to that, it lets you race remote control cars against cars driven entirely by artificial intelligence. The Anki Drive vehicles analyze their relative positions on the track 500 times per second, and make decisions accordingly.

What’s more, players can give AI cars different tasks: when commanded to, computer-controlled cars will attempt to block a certain car by getting in front of it. They can also be told to put the pedal to the metal, of course.

This product is honestly mind-blowing to me – you can upgrade and level-up your cars, just like in video games, and you can use the cars’ weapons: tractor beams, shields, and more! Send opponents’ cars reeling or pull them towards you so that you can get a better shot! If this does not end up being the top-selling toy of Christmas 2013, I’ll eat both of my shoes.

BBZ150 Bluetooth Robot: Foosball 2.0

One of those games I always saw in the arcade quite, but never quite understood was foosball. I get that it’s sort of like playing soccer on a table, but I always thought it was boring after just a few minutes of play. I might be able to get behind playing some 21st century foosball using these soccer playing robots from BeeWi.

The robot is called the BBZ150 and it uses Bluetooth connectivity and a smartphone application for control. Each of the little robots comes with numbers for its shirt, a little soccer ball, and a little soccer goal. The control app is available for Android, iOS devices, and Windows Phone.

If you’re not into soccer, you can just cruise the robot around like any remote control toy and you can play sumo wrestling with it using a downloadable sumo ring you can print at home.

The BBZ150 robot will ship in October for £29.99 (~$48 USD) each.

RoboTech SuperCar: Autonomous Cars Shrink Down to Size

Have you ever wanted ride shotgun in a robotic car as it drives around your neighborhood? Sure, autonomous cars are still very expensive, but how about miniature version? I bet you hadn’t though of that, but a couple of engineers came up with this scaled-down version of Google’s driverless car.

The RoboTech SuperCar is a toy car kit, powered by an Arduino controller. It has RGB LED headlights and tail lights, an ultrasonic sensor, and a 24-pin RC bus that can interface with its microcontroller. The car can operate in several modes, including full RC, computer-assisted RC, or fully-autonomous driving.

The benefit is that it’s low cost compared to a full-size autonomous car, and I’m sure that you can have your own robotic invasion fleet ready soon. It’s definitely something quite ingenious to have around if you want to spy on your neighbors.
