The Utility Pole Dance

Electric cables and wires can get messy around the utility poles, posing a fire hazard. To ensure that the cables stay streamlined and accountable, the Doughnut Pole offers a great solution. Designed like a sleek organizer that even prevents birds from nesting on poles, we can totally see this being the next safe thang to be used.

The Doughnut Pole is a 2014 IDSA’s IDEA Award winner.

Thermo-Electric Element Will Harness Your Body Heat To Power Your Gadgets

Thermo-element-body-heat-to-produce-electric-energy

Your body is using up energy every second you’re awake. Some of that energy is translated into your muscles moving, and some of it is lost as heat. Researchers from the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST) have developed a wearable strip of material that can easily be woven into clothing and can convert your body heat into usable electric power. A thin strip about 4 inches in length can produce 40mW of power, which isn’t much, but is enough to power a semiconductor chip. Increase the strip to 20in.-40in. and suddenly you’re looking at 2W, which is enough to charge your phones or other electronics. The material is made from fibreglass, which makes it flexible, unlike current ceramic-based thermo-electric solutions. It’s also claimed it has a 14-fold efficiency improvement over other methods. According to Professor Jo Byeong-jin, the lead researcher, this technology could be commercialized within the next 2 to 3 years, pending “issues concerning element integration process optimization and mass-production.”

Nose-shaped Outlets Are Always Running (with Electricity)

These electrical plugs look like noses, just in case you want some great big nostrils on your wall. These Hanaga Tap Nose Outlets from design firm ekoD Works will make your home look pretty damn weird.

They will turn any horizontal U.S. or Japanese wall outlet into a nose-shaped vertical outlet that you can plug into, making it look even weirder.

These come in black, white and pink and sell for $35(USD) a piece. That’s pretty expensive for a nose-shaped outlet. Never mind the fact that it’ll block two outlets due to its height. ‘Snot cool man.

I suppose you could draw a face around the outlet area and really complete the package if you have to have a nose on your wall. Humans are weird. Am I the only one creeped out by this? Just a little?

DIY Stun Glove: You Got the Touch! You Got the Power!

A couple of years ago we saw a pair of taser gloves made with everyday items. But both gloves had to be in contact with the target in order for them to deliver a shock. GreekGadgetGuru’s stun glove lets you ward off attackers with just one hand.

The metal spikes on the glove are wired to the stun gun on his wrist. GreekGadgetGuru made it so that the polarity of the fingers are alternating. This means he only has to touch something – or someone – with two adjacent fingers for the current to flow. He also incorporated what appears to be a flex sensor into the glove’s switch, enabling him to toggle the flow of electricity just by flexing his hand.

Send GreekGadgetGuru a message on Facebook if you want to know how he made the stun glove. Then send a message to all the jerks who – nope. Just kidding. Breathe. Easy.
