The Pointillist Artist’s Electronic Pen

It’s pretty amazing what people can create just by drawing dots all over the place. Pointillist art is created by using tiny dots of ink instead of lines to create the illusion of shades of grey. It blows my mind because the process just seems so repetitive, requiring you to lift the pen up and down as you make dot after dot. Well, the Pointillist Artist’s Electronic Pen is here to make it easier.

Instead of lifting your pen every time you make a dot, the pen’s tip automatically lifts itself out of the way. So now you can draw an image pointillism-style while moving your hand like you’re creating a regular illustrations. I imagine this would save you some time as well as alleviating strain from your wrist.

The pen has an integrated mechanism that causes the pen tip to pulse up and down at a rate of 600 times per minute. That’s apparently enough to stipple a sketch sheet ten times faster than what a normal artist can do. The only problem is that the integrated battery only holds 30 minutes of power so you will have to draw in 30 minute bursts.

Of course, it won’t make just anyone into an artist, and you’ll still need a pretty good sense of light and shadow to make it do your bidding. It might be fun to try this thing for just $69.95(USD) over at Hammacher Schlemmer.

I thought pens that had stuff in the back that floated were awesome growing up. Mostly this was due to the pens my uncle kept in his room that had well endowed ladies whose shirts floated off when you tipped the pens. If you like that sort of writing instrument, without the hooters, you can get some sweet Star Trek floating pens from ThinkGeek.

You get two pens in each set, which sells for $11.99. The first set includes Sulu stabbing a sword at a redshirt, and Kirk vs. Gorn.

The other set offers Spock and Kirk doing battle, and Kirk being buried in tribbles.

The bummer part is that the ink inside is non-replaceable. That means if you really want to use a pen, once it is out of ink it’s half the pen it used to be.

The Most Minimal Writing Utensil

A Pen that Practically Melts in Your Hand

Our hands are always working, typing on a keyboard, texting on a mobile device – constant motion. At times, I feel the ache of this constant movement and look for ways to stretch my fingers to lesson the strain. But what I find odd is that the tools I used growing up weren’t all tech tools, but tools like pencils, markers and pens.

I love to draw, and love to use pens to sketch out something on paper. However, I find that after having become accustomed to using my hands with technology, going back to a pencil or pen seems almost foreign, and my hand quickly gets tired from gripping the roundness of my pens.
