Consumer Reports: Verizon ranked the best major US carrier, AT&T ranked the worst

Nothing much has changed in this year's mobile carrier satisfaction survey from Consumer Reports, with Verizon again being rated the best of the major providers, netting good scores for voice and data service quality, staff knowledge and issue resolution. The other big players also ranked in the same order this time around, with Sprint and T-Mobile following behind Big Red, and AT&T staying in last position. None of the bottom three scored particularly highly, especially in relation to voice service quality, and only four points separated them in the ratings. While AT&T had the worst value and data service quality scores, its LTE network was ranked the best of any carrier, and the least problematic. MVNO Consumer Cellular, which piggybacks on AT&T's network, didn't disappoint after last year's overall first place finish, keeping the top spot and receiving great scores all round. Full results of the survey, which polled 63,253 subscribers, will be available in Consumer Reports' January 2013 issue.

AT&T to start selling the ASUS VivoTab RT on November 16th for $500, keyboard dock included for a limited time

We've known for some time that AT&T would sell an LTE version of ASUS' VivoTab RT tablet running Windows RT, but until today we just had the vague promise that it would arrive "in time for the holidays" (Christmas, Hanukkah, Flying Spaghetti Monster Day, take your pick). Well, now we know: AT&T just issued announced the 4G VivoTab RT will go on sale this week, on November 16th, with a list price of $500. For a limited time, at least, that price includes the keyboard dock you see pictured above. (The press release says it comes with a "Mobile dock with a keyboard and additional battery," as if they're separate pieces of hardware, but that's just some sly wording: the keyboard dock has a battery built in.)

Additionally, AT&T is running a promotion in which users get $100 off the VivoTab RT (or any other AT&T tablet) after purchasing a Windows Phone handset. If you read the fine print in the press release at the link, you'll see that AT&T is requiring a two-year agreement for both the phone and tablet. Buy the tablet unsubsidized, though, and you can add it to an existing data share plan for $10 and up per month. Either way, is it worth the added data fees? We'll leave that to you, but we would suggest you pay particular attention to the software section of our review: this thing was awfully buggy when we tested it.

To say that the launch of Isis has felt drawn out would be a mild understatement. The alliance first signaled its intentions two years ago, detailed its first markets one year ago and faced a last-minute delay. All the ducks are finally in a row, however, and residents of both Austin as well as Salt Lake City can tap to pay (or score discounts) at the "hundreds" of locations that accept NFC-based purchases through American Express, Capital One, Chase and Isis' own cash card. Launch day brings app- and SIM-enabled access for nine devices spread rather unevenly across AT&T, T-Mobile and Verizon: only the Droid Incredible 4G LTE is confirmed working for Verizon subscribers, while the rest are divided more equally between multiple Samsung Galaxies and HTC devices like the Amaze 4G and One X. Over 20 phones should be Isis-aware before the end of the year. It's a potentially strong start to one of the few truly cross-network mobile payment systems in the US, but we see a long road ahead before Isis gives Google Wallet some jitters -- there's legions of banks, cities and stores needed before Isis is widespread, and we're not counting on that ever-elusive universal hardware support.

PayPal Here goes on sale at AT&T stores like a onestop shop for account hiccups

PayPal Here, despite all its focus on in-store transactions, hasn't really been available to buy in a US store -- that's been the domain of the seemingly ubiquitous Square reader. eBay's payment wing has at last established that retail beachhead through a deal with AT&T. About 1,800 of the carrier's stores are now carrying PayPal Here readers, and they'll keep the service's big rival from hogging the spotlight at a time when most aren't even aware that there's any competition. If you're still cynical, you can look at the AT&T move as a matter of convenience: at least this way, all your account headaches will come from one place.

Samsung confirms October 24th event is for the US Galaxy Note II, removes what doubt was left

Ever since Samsung issued invitations for its October 24th event, it's become increasingly clearer that the New York City gathering would center on the Galaxy Note II. After all, we've tried almost every US version so far, and nothing else has loomed on the horizon. Just in case there was any lingering uncertainty, though, Samsung sent us that promised formal invitation with exact details of what's going on: it's the US stop for the Galaxy Note II World Tour, with a press event that night followed by a "consumer celebration" later on that might bring a public side to the affair. Most American editions of the phablet have been announced or re-announced, which suggests to us that we'll primarily get firmer release dates and prices while we're busy hobnobbing.
