This digital bag-tag could stop you from missing your flight

This would probably be what I deem an unlikely place to put a screen, but the Bagtag, on the rare occasion that you’re running late to catch a flight, may just shave precious minutes off your checking-in routine, making sure you’re aboard the airlines. Although, when I think about it now, it helps even when you’re on time, by allowing you to spend more time in the lounge and less time queueing up to check your bags in.

The Bagtag is an electronic little gizmo that attaches to your bag, allowing you to check your bags in via your smartphone and beam the generated tag to the screen attached to your luggage. Doing so saves you the need to manually check each bag in (a problem that only gets worse when you’re stuck behind an unending line of people). The tag appears on the e-ink screen, making it easy to read and even scan via a barcode scanner. The Bagtag uses low-energy bluetooth to pull information from your smartphone, displaying the tag on a screen so robust it can take every bit of abuse that comes along with rough baggage handling by the airline staff. Stick it, strap it, screw it, the Bagtag stays in its place on all types of bags. It’s weatherproof, damage-resistant, and literally a headache to take off, which means your bags are less likely to get lost/misplaced because of a scuffed or torn tag. You’ll be doing your bit to protect the environment too by printing out less paper tags! Lastly, the Bagtag comes with state-of-the-art hardware encryption that allows you and only you to beam content to its e-ink screen… oh, and it comes with a 3V coin cell battery that lasts as long as 2,500 flights, which should easily last you a lifetime and some!

For the over-protective bag owner

bagtag_1

More than any calamity, the thing I fear most while flying is losing my luggage. Now while most people want to bring the IoT to the most absurd things in life (obviously a reference to the smart-bra), most people are forgetting that design is all about solving problems, not just injecting technology into experiences. The Bagtag is a little piece of tech wizardry that snaps onto your luggage. It uses Low Energy Bluetooth that’s accurate up to 30 meters to tell you where your bag is (LE Bluetooth means your battery virtually lasts a year). Afraid your bag is more than 30 meters away from you? Another city perhaps? The Bagtag comes with a QR code that can be scanned, helping one locate the owner of the bag along with contact details. Either that, or it uses the location of other Bagtag users to get a rough estimate on its location. You then get a fairly accurate location of your estranged luggage. I’ve got my money set on the Bagtag!

Iberia becomes the first airline to offer print-at-home luggage labels with MyBagTag

Iberia becomes the first airline to offer printathome luggage labels with MyBagTag

We can't say Iberia would be our first pick for a trip across the pond, but if you live in Spain, or you're traveling to the Iberian Peninsula, the airline is often the most convenient option. We're definitely intrigued by the firm's new print-at-home baggage tracker initiative as well. The new MyBagTag service, an industry first, enables passengers to print out luggage labels alongside their boarding passes, theoretically saving time at the airport and giving you an extra opportunity to ensure that both you and your bags are headed to the same destination. The service is now available for domestic flights, and will soon be extended to cover European and overseas destinations as well. It's currently only offered for direct routings though -- connecting flights will be supported in the future. See it in action in the video after the break.

British Airways teams up with Designworks for electronic bag tags that nab info from your smartphone

British Airways teams up with Designworks for electronic bag tags that nab info from your smartphone

Tired of ripping off those old luggage tags after a trip? Well, those could be a thing of the past if all goes according to plan -- at least when flying British Airways. The airline cooked up an electronic bag tag that looks to discard the paper version with the help of the folks at Designworks. Once passengers have checked in, they simply need to hover a smartphone over the tag to beam (via NFC, we'd surmise) both flight info and the requisite barcode to the tag's display. The idea behind the whole thing isn't only to keep the paper-changing to a minimum, but to also save precious time at the check-in counter. A live trial of the tagging gadget is planned, so we'll soon be able to see if the concept stands up to baggage handlers.
