Dress Your Wounds with Pepperoni Pizza

Did you get a boo-boo on your finger? Don’t be normal and wrap it in an ordinary Band-Aid. Instead, be a surrealist and protect your cuts and scrapes with a slice of pizza. No silly, not actual searing hot pizza. That would just burn your fingers. I’m talking about these bandages that look like pizza.

GamaGo’s whimsical Pizza Bandages look like tiny slices of pepperoni pizza, each with just the perfect amount of meat and cheese to dress your wounds. They’re actually made from a latex-free, sterile material with a small gauze pad inside, so they work just like regular bandages – only they’re triangular. I suppose if you’ve got a really weird grouping of cuts, you could arrange multiple slices to form a complete pizza pie.

You can order up a hot and fresh box of Pizza Bandages over at Entertainment Earth for just $5.

Color-changing bandages detect and treat drug-resistant infections

It may sound dramatic, but antibiotic resistance is one of the biggest threats to global health. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), it's urgent that we change the way we prescribe and use antibiotics. One approach might be to use banda...

Band Aid Pop

I recently had a nasty fall that required me to dress and change my bandages everyday. The kind of wound that I had was quite deep and wide, and bang on the knee. Imagine, for almost two months that it took to heal, I had to use two set of ointments, one cream, sterile gauze and tape, to hold things together. It was painful and a long-drawn process. If only I had access to concepts like the Popband-aid, those two months would have been easy for me.

For Those Hurtful Moments

Here is an innovative design called the Cold Compress Band-Aid, which is effective for hemostasis. It is formed by the chemical reaction of H2O and NH4NO3; the special structural design allows you to easily break the capsules containing NH4NO3 inside the Band-Aid and with one hand alone. In essence you have a handy cold compress to take care of your bruises and nicks and cuts.

One-Handed Bandaid

Designed for patients who must self-inject, like hemophiliacs and diabetics, Easy Aid makes the process of tending the post-puncture area easier. Unlike standard bandaids, the design is almost effortless to use thanks to its gasket design which allows users to quickly pinpoint and place the bandage then pinch off the cover with one hand and in one simple motion! Egg Membrane Bandages: The Incredible, Medical Egg

I never thought that those membranes on the inside of an eggshell were good for anything, except if you’re a chick inside an egg. Now it turns out that egg membranes can be used as natural bandages. That being said, you’ll need to keep a dozen eggs handy whenever you do anything dangerous.

egg membrane

A National Institute of Health study found that egg membranes could make an ideal covering for skin graft dressings, due to the egg membranes properties of wound protection, pain relief, and the promotion of infection-free healing. And the guys at Tips on Food Storage say you can use the membranes to quickly stop bleeding from a would too. In order to use this method, you’ll have to carefully peel the egg membrane out of the egg, after having cracked an egg, and poured out the egg white and yolk. Apply the membrane to the wound and keep pressure on it until it hardens, and you can get proper stitches and wound dressing from a medical professional.

I think that plasters and bandages are probably more handy and sterile than plain old eggs, but it makes you wonder if they weren’t used in the past as bandages as well.

Better Bandaging

The AmoeBAND is a bionic concept for band aid. The design features strategic cut-outs so that you can shape it to fit fingers in such a way that it is easy to bend them and not disrupt the bandage. It even features an intelligent dressing material allows you to regularly check wounds from the outside, without upsetting the healing process. Since the bandage material used exudes a leather-like feel, availability in different skin-tones helps it blend in, without overly highlighting the injury.

As the designers explain, “According to research, the when an infection of a wound is detected, the pH value is between 6.5 and 8.5. AmoeBAND’s indicator cross turns purple, alerting the user needs to change it immediately.”

Even the packaging has been redesigned to a matchbox style and even includes Braille instructions!

AmoeBAND is a 2012 IDEA Award Finalist.

Chameleon Bandage: Now You See It, Now You Don’t

I’ll say one thing: bandages patch cuts up pretty quickly and easily, but they sure aren’t the most visually appealing things. If you’re the shallow type who cares a lot about your looks, then you might find this concept design quite interesting. Presenting… the Chameleon Bandage!

Chameleon BandageIt’s everything vain people would want in a bandage, and more. It looks like a regular Band-Aid at the outset, but once you stick it on, its shade slowly changes until it eventually matches the color of your skin, concealing both the bandage and your wound or cut effectively.

I suppose some sort of mysterious chemical elements on the Chameleon Bandage gives it its awesome camouflaging properties, although the designers behind it, namely Xue Xing Wu, Zi Yu Li, Yue Hua Zhu, and Zhi Qiang Wang haven’t provided any details regarding this. Go figure.

The Chameleon Bandage is a 2012 iF Design Talents entry. I hope they win, because the concept is, frankly, pretty awesome. While there are already inexpensive see-through bandages on the market, there’s something inherently cooler about this idea.

Camouflaging a Bandage

The only time I’ve been so obsessed with bandages was when I spied the jewel encrusted Cynthia Rowley’s Limited Edition. This Chameleon Bandage takes the concept of band-aid protection a notch higher by becoming literally invisible. I suppose there must be some chemical elements to it. However the designers have not clarified it as yet. Imagine how cool will it be to sport a bandage that blends with your skin tone, especially for those awkward places on your chin or cheek! Me wants one now!
