Bedside table designed with a detachable laptop tray lets you store devices, cords, books

There have been a lot of studies, mental health infographics, and memes that tell you to not take your smartphone or any other device to bed. But really, how many of us actually do that? So yes I admit I’m one of those who tried being gadget-less as I lie in bed and I lasted less than a week. And along with laptops and tablets and smartphones come the tangles of cords and chargers. So for people like me who can’t live without them, the next problem would be a side table that can handle all of that.

Designer: João Teixeira

For those who don’t have actual side tables in their bedroom, the next best thing would be a chair or stool. That became the inspiration for the design of this bedside table called Mate. It is designed to look like a stool but its main purpose is to store all of the things that you “need” before you sleep and that includes devices. The top view actually looks like a breakfast tray or a laptop tray that you would use to eat or work (or both) in bed. And yes, that is actually the other component of this clever design.

So you get a chair-inspired design for your bedside table with a minimalist but functional feel. Your laptop and other gadgets can fit at the top part and you can have other stuff like books, journals, and other bedside needs at the “shelf” at the bottom. It also has rounded corners and some holes where you can fit in your cords so you don’t get strangled by the tangles of wires that accompany your devices. You can also place a cup of coffee or tea at the top but for a clumsy person like me, that’s a pretty risky move putting them near devices.

My favorite part of the Mate bedside table is the slidable and removable table top. It contributes to the ease of managing your cables and cords but more importantly, it serves as a mini table when you want to work in bed. The removable part becomes a table tray for your laptop or your food, whichever you need at the moment. You get a multi-purpose piece of furniture beside you, even though you should be sleeping.

This minimalist bedside table is definitely too smart for its own good

After years of being immersed in minimalism, the design world seems to be saying in the other direction to promote the strengths of maximalism. Not everyone is ready to jump ship, however, and some are finding ways to bridge the divide. That often means putting hidden functions in what looks like a pretty bare and barren piece of furniture. IKEA, famed for embracing and capitalizing on minimalism, has already started incorporating smart features into its furniture, like wireless charging or even hidden speakers. Sometimes, however, those hidden features themselves can feel a bit overwhelming, like when a handsome bedside table turns out to have no less than eight functions you have to discover and remember since none of those are obvious at first glance.

Designer: Foshan Shunde Midea

A bedside table is where we often place a night lamp, either for reading at night or for lighting in the darkness. These days, it’s also where we put our phones on as well, sometimes charging them while we sleep. Books and other accessories can also sometimes go on or inside the table’s shelves and drawers. Apparently, those aren’t enough anymore, and some appliance manufacturers are trying to put everything except the kitchen sink inside a small table beside your bed.

There is one attempt to put a mini-fridge in that position that doubles as a bedside table, but that’s mostly to conserve space, especially in hotels. Midea’s Smart Bedside Table admittedly doesn’t go that far, but it has thrown in everything else that it says is related to bedroom activities. Or at least the ones that will help you sleep more comfortably.

The bedside table’s main functions are supposedly for air purification and humidification, something that’s not directly apparent when looking at the beautifully minimal piece of furniture. The “sub-functions,” however, are where things get a bit more out of hand. There’s a hidden wireless charging area on top of the table, but only near the front. The rear area of that surface actually flips open to reveal low-temperature storage with just enough room for a bottle or a few cans. The front area actually does open up to a UV sterilizing compartment for your gadgets or jewelry. There’s also a USB hub, aroma diffuser, and, thankfully, a bit of lighting.

On its own, the Midea smart bedside table is already quite attractive with its wooden body and clean design. You wouldn’t be able to tell that it’s actually hiding a ton of features, which is probably a good thing. “Out of sight, out of mind,” as they say, and having to keep in mind a handful of functions might be the last thing you want to have on your mind before you drift off to dreamland. Hopefully, in peace and undisturbed by thoughts of the drink you stashed away in your secret bedside minibar.

This bedside table with an inbuilt wireless charging hub is the trend that IKEA should pick up!

We have so many gadgets these days, and the requirement for equal charging points to keep them juiced at all times and the cables lying around gets me vexed. More so in current times when we are primarily stuck in the safe confines of our home as the variant strains of the COVID-19 virus are emerging worldwide. So, how do you keep your gadgets charged up for getting over boredom at all times, minus the hassles of wired chargers? Wireless charging is one way to do it, but the charging docs have a particular designated area where the mobile devices need to be kept for them to function. Won’t it be great if there was a side table that doubled as a wireless charging hub for all your gadgets? The ease of just keeping them on the side table when you snooze and the charging is taken care of while you rest!

The SNOOZE by Subin Cho does exactly that, and it uses magnetic resonant wireless charging technology to keep the devices charged seamlessly. This makes complete sense, as the craving for multiple wirelessly charge capable devices like smartphones, tablets, earphones, or headphones will not shun any time soon. The designer believes that the technology will be commercialized in 2023, and SNOOZE will be there to take up all the hassle for you. The charging plate built in the bedside table’s upper section charges any wireless compatible mobile device, audio accessories, or any other compatible device kept in the range of 50 cm. The light on the bedside table is an indicator of the charging range, and whenever a device comes in this area, the light turns on, and charging commences. For bedside lamp function, the swipe bar on one side can be used to control the brightness levels. The sleek, minimal design of Snooze with its modern aesthetics brings to mind a point when IKEA goes electric. And honestly, we wouldn’t mind having a range of such multifunctional products at our disposal.

The user can charge up to 6 devices simultaneously, and the compatible app shows the charge level of the particular device and the number in which the devices are connected. As for the design, the bedside table is height adjustable and comes in a very modern overall design and material finish. The drawers and the bottom section function just like any other side table to keep things like books, keychains, or other things. Overall a very sleek design that can easily see fruition due to its practicality. IKEA, I hope you are listening!

Bobby Berk would approve of this modular, wooden cabinet inspired by the phases of the moon!

I love modular, easy-to-assemble furniture that is designed to adapt to your space – big or small. Right now IKEA is the biggest player in this arena but if you dig a little deeper (or just follow Yanko Design, we do the digging for you) then you will find gems like the MOON cabinet – Bobby Berk will 100% approve of this!

This timeless looking piece is crafted from solid wood finished off with rounded corners that give it an organic form. “We got the three elements from deconstructing traditional wooden cabinets and immovable system furniture,” says award-winning furniture designer Chuang. MOON allows the user to have a flexible lifestyle as this one cabinet serves many different purposes thanks to its modular build. You can combine, assemble, and deconstruct it to fit your space or transform it from storage to seating. Just like the phases of the moon, the shape of this cabinet changes to fit different needs – in fact, it has a little circular cutout detail to symbolize that. I love that you can stack it up or take it apart to change the height of the piece as a whole.

It has open storage, cabinet doors as well as closed drawers so you really get every type of compact storage solution in one single furniture design. When not being used for storage, it can serve as a seat and a table too because it has been constructed to bear human weight! MOON is an evergreen, universal, and functional furniture design that maximizes flexibility through minimalism.

With 12 different configurations possible, this modular bedside table will fit anywhere you like!

The most dynamic pieces of furniture are typically the pieces that offer more than meets the eye. The chair that doubles as a storage bin and work desk, the lamp that transforms into a clock radio, or air purifiers that also work as bookshelves. There are some designs that attempt to totally transform a product’s use through modularity, but then some other designs whose aim is to provide several different uses for the same product through the breakdown and reconstruction of its modular components. Such is the case for NÓMADA, a modular, multi-purpose bedside table.

The team behind NÓMADA decided to attain the bedside table’s modularity through the material used during its production process by carving and integrating notches, buttons, and twisted, narrow chutes into each wooden and steel panel used for construction. It’s a good thing too because tools can be tricky to store in smaller living spaces like apartments or studios. The end result makes up a bedside table that appears simple and whose purpose seems singular upon first glance, but when deconstructed, the possibilities for restructuring NÓMADA are laid out in front of you, all you have to do is mix-and-match as your tabular needs guide you. Even if you just want a subtle revamp or facelift for your apartment’s design, simply unscrew and see which pieces fit where! NÓMADA comes with four main components: four table legs with adjustable lengths, a steel storage area with a matte finish, and a classic wooden drawer with the same stain as the legs. The compatible color scheme and sleek structure of NÓMADA also help to move the reconstruction process along smoothly. By simply unscrewing the table’s legs from the steel storage area and removing the drawer feature, users can configure the side table in any way that works best for them and their living space. An elevated desk tray can be detached and function on its own, while the table maintains its core purpose or the height of the table’s legs can be adjusted in order to either shorten the table’s height or give it some length to reach higher bedsides.

NÓMADA is capable of producing twelve different configurations so that it can adapt to any of your needs or living spaces. Coated in neutral tones and comprising a minimalist end design, NÓMADA not only morphs into new structures with the ease of a screw but also offers a breadth of both cohesiveness and simplicity to your personal interior-design taste with its sleek, elegant color scheme and lean frame.

Crazy About Concrete

The functionalities of these two different objects are pretty straightforward: one is a silverware organizer and one is a bedside table. But what really sets them apart is a unique material combination of fiber-concrete and raw wood that’s just plain beautiful! For it’s own foodie-flair, the table features one molded recess for a coffee mug and one for cutlery or napkins. Underneath, there’s even a tray-box to hide breakfast-in-bed when you’re finished!

It’s what’s inside that counts.

At first glance, Misko looks like your average bedside drawer table… minimal and well-balanced. But, flip the switch and that’s when you’ll fall in love! An internal LED shines bright from within, illuminating the translucent top and peeking through the handle space. Combining these two functions keeps your bedroom space uncluttered but just as bright. DO WANT!

Bedside Beauty

The simplistic Decale bedside table is a thoughtful design composed entirely of reclaimed beechwood and pine taken from used pallets. The construction is traditional in shape with slight differences in the angle (and color) of the legs that give it just a touch of modernity. Using repurposed wood means each table has a unique character with its own imperfections and subtle differences.
