It’s 2015 And Where’s My Hoverboard? Here. Here’s Your Hoverboard

back-to-the-future-desktop-hoverboard

Ok, so it’s probably not what you had in mind. But let’s face it, this Back To The Future Desktop Hoverboard is about as close as you’re going to get to the ‘real thing’, at least for now. The pyrolytic graphite board hovers over a rare earth magnet base; give it a little push and it’ll go back and forth for a bit. Sure, it’s not as satisfying as carving some turns in the air, but at least it’s officially licensed merchandise and not come cheap trinket. The desktop toy will attract a bit of attention, and keep you excited about the possibility of seeing the real thing one day soon (Google might actually be able to build one, but won’t). It’s $40.

Back to the Future DeLorean iPhone 6 Case: It’s About Time

Along with the Tim Burton Batmobile iPhone 6 case, Bandai also added this Back to the Future DeLorean DMC-12 to its Crazy Case series. The case has light up headlights and flux bands, and its hood and front tires slide away to expose the iPhone 6’s camera and side buttons.

Game Boy Transformed into Darth Vader, TMNT And Back to the Future DeLorean

Etsy seller Theworldisagameboy turns the classic Nintendo handheld into a game system and a toy in one. Check out the TMNT Michelangelo version that he made. It has it’s own Oven Fresh PIZZA! cartridge, of course.

These Game Boys are still fully functional and great to display. The TMNT edition will set you back about $263(USD). He also has a Darth Vader version and an amazing Back to the Future DeLorean with a Flux Capacitor cartridge. That one is my favorite. I love the detail.

Great work. It takes a good eye to do this sort of thing. You can’t just stick a Vader head and some arms on an Game Boy and expect it to turn out this good.

Floating hoverboard from Back to the Future arrives right on time

Floating hoverboard

The world might not exactly look like Back to the Future claimed it would by this point in time… but we’re almost there. A critical part of it, that is the flying hoverboard, arrived before the movie was deemed a vile lie, so we’re now rejoicing. Because everything in it totally happened, ok?

Because no one wants to live in a world where Back to the Future lied, there is a real, working floating hoverboard out there, based on the Mattel Replica. It uses magnets integrated in the board in order to suspend itself in the air and actually float.

This hoverboard can only stay suspended over its base and won’t actually float on asphalt or water, which might be a consistency problem for the movie, but we’ve never been to Hill Valley, so maybe the entire city was built as a hoverboarding paradise. See? That’s what happens when Biff is not the mayor. You can buy the product from its developers here, at €1,950.

Oculus Rift Hoverboard Simulator: HoVRboard

We have less than a year to go before Back to the Future II’s hoverboard prediction is debunked. But thanks to virtual reality, we might be able to simulate the feeling of riding a hoverboard. Game developer Kieran Lord aka Cratesmith recently showed off an early build of his hoverboard simulator for the Oculus Rift.

Kieran is making the game using the popular Unity game engine. He’s using a Wii Balance Board to control his game.

If you have an Oculus Rift, a Wii Balance Board and a Mac, you’re in luck: Kieran shared an early build of his game through Dropbox. You can find out more about the game on Kieran’s Reddit thread.

Great Scott! LEGO Back to the Future Set Gets Official

Despite numerous unofficial builds, fans have been waiting for an honest to god authentic Back to the Future LEGO set for years. And now it looks like we will get our wish thanks to LEGO crowdsourcing site Cuusoo. LEGO has announced that an official BTTF is now in the works.
lego bttf
The Back to the Future Cuusoo campaign was launched over a year ago by a team of LEGO builders, and since then the project has gathered over 10,000 supporters, and was selected by LEGO out of its Summer 2012 review of Cuusoo finalists. Three sets were proposed in the original campaign, including a standard DeLorean from BTTF with a Marty figure, skateboard, and a Doc figure. The DeLorean with hover modification from BTTF2 along with Marty, a hoverboard, and Doc in his future outfit. There was also a western-themed BTTF3 set. At this point, we don’t know which version LEGO will release. The set will be called the 21103 Back to the Future Time Machine.

I’m betting it will be the standard DeLorean, though it would be awesome if LEGO included parts for you to reconfigure it into different versions. The final model will become available sometime in mid 2013, so we’ll have to wait a while to see the final model.

One other cool tidbit about this model. Since Cuusoo contributors get a 1% commission on any LEGO sets sold that come out of the process, and Team BTTF has decided to donate their earnings to the Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s Research.
