Plant-inspired desk accessories bring a sense of calm to your work life

There are plenty of tips and pieces of advice on how to decrease stress levels at work, particularly on your desk. Keep your workspace clean and tidy, put objects and pictures that inspire, and add green plants that remind you to take breaks and live. The latter, however, isn’t always possible in all environments, and some might not be too keen on the added responsibility of keeping that plant alive, even if it’s a succulent. That’s not to say you have to give up the benefits of having some green on your desk, especially not with this collection of accessory concept designs that try to bring life to your work by taking inspiration from Nature’s miracle workers.

Plants have long been a source of inspiration for creators of all disciplines, including scientists, engineers, architects, and, of course, designers. The natural beauty these silent creatures possess is surprisingly not that easy to recreate, but we can easily distill the essence of their forms and translate them into designs that hold meaning in our lives. These desk accessories, for example, try to nudge your mind to think about real greenery, eliciting the same emotions of peacefulness, calm, and relaxation that a plant would bring if it were actually standing on your desk.

It’s not a literal imitation, of course; just an interpretation of the basic forms and shapes that plants possess. The Greenery Pencil Holder, for example, is a cylinder with a curved plate partially wrapped around it at an angle, almost like a bamboo stem with a leaf growing out of it. This “leaf” actually functions as a container as well, creating two spaces to place your pens, pencils, and other long stationery tools.

The Greenery Clock is a bit more abstract in comparison, with a stem that curves upward and a leaf that droops down from the top, forming a minimalist digital clock. There is actually a second leaf that’s less visible since it’s lying flat on the desk, creating a space to put small items on. The latter design is repeated in the Greenery Tray with two horizontal “leaves” providing the same flat container. What makes it different, other than the lack of a clock, are the elongated “stems” that act as a hook for hanging key rings and other items.

The Greenery Cable Holder is admittedly a bit of a stretch to imagine as leaves growing on a leaf vein. After all, it’s just a set of circles with cutouts for inserting a cable. One side of the circle is flat, allowing the cable holder to be stuck on desks or walls. With this set, you can add some green hues to your desk without sacrificing space, deriving both utility and aesthetic from simple designs, thanks to some inspiration from Mother Nature.

This LEGO-like cable organizer is a fun and innovative way to keep your desk organized

As someone who uses multiple gadgets and therefore carries several cords with me at all times, the chances of these cords tangling themselves with each other and with my other stuff are pretty high. The same thing almost always happens with my various chargers in my workspace. There are several solutions already available in the market but there is always room for even more innovation. Sometimes, the best solutions can also be the simplest.

Designer: Adam Miklosi

This concept for a cable organizer came about because of the same problem that I and countless individuals, have experienced as stated above. He also experienced the tangling of cords with other stuff in his bag, in particular, with something as mundane as his lozenges. This inspired him to design a cable organizer that is actually similar to his pack of lozenges. Actually, at first glance, they looked more like lego pieces or bricks, if you didn’t know the backstory.

The cable organizer is made of a silicone body with peg circular cylinders on top where you wrap the cords around. You can actually place 2 cables on top of each other if they’re placed in the same row. He came up with 3 different types, depending on how many cables you have and also the space on your work area. There’s a mini (2×2), a medium one (3×3), and a large cable holder (2×5). If you’re using it on your desk, you can stick it to the surface with a micro suction tape.

The renders show different colors, most of them in light, pastel colors. There are also different materials used like concrete, teak wood, and even a Prusament galaxy black PLA. It’s something that’s pretty simple but also well thought of. I for one, with my constant tangle of cords and cables, would like to have something as minimalist and functional as this. While it’s designed for work spaces, it would also somehow work for my bag as well.

It took one simple redesign to turn the plug-point into a neat wire-organizer

Loose wires are incredibly ugly and dangerous. Not only do they stand the chance of getting entangled in something (like your foot, cat, Roomba, etc.) but they’re also just plain unsightly. An unkempt wire can absolutely ruin a space’s aesthetic, and it takes a pretty keen and determined eye to spot the problem and set out to fix it.

Determined to never have random loose wires corrupt the visual balance of his spaces, Andrew Ferrier designed the Cable Cradle, a simple, innovative twist on the plug-point. Ferrier’s redesigned plug-point comes with an extended lip that gives you a channel to wrap your spare wires around. Almost like a thread and a spool, the wire can be looped as many times as needed to make your space look neat, and to prevent you from accidentally tripping over that pesky little wire that’s aimlessly strewn across the floor. Ferrier even built a nice ridge on the top of the Cable Cradle to allow you to rest your phone on it, so you can charge your phone and dock it too! GENIUS!

Fingers Hold ‘em Best

The Finger Jack Holder is a great idea that helps you keep your cables organized on your desk. The fingers keep your cables ordered and within reach. The option of tagging each cable is quite a clever one, it makes it easier for you to pick the camera charger line out of the other gadget and devices cable that the fingers hold. I like it!

Finger Jack Holder is a 2012 red dot award: design concept winner.

Not Your Average Laces

Unlace is a colorful, rubbery, twistable tie for untangling knotty problems with cords or cables. Each malleable piece can also be twisted for a variety of other uses like creating a custom iPhone stand or binding desktop objects together. The clever design was inspired by shoelaces and from a distance looks exactly like the familiar fragment. It’s a simple solution for tying up loose ends that are driving you mad!
