The $3,299 Ciga Design Tourbillon Chinese Zodiac The Year Of Dragon Limited Edition watch, as the name suggests, is designed to celebrate the year of the dragon in the Chinese calendar. Only 365 examples of the watch will be ever made in the avant-garde black dial that exudes true strength from mere appearance.

The watch is arguably an instant attention grabber, but it’s the golden dragon over the tourbillon movement and the shiny natural diamonds on the hands that captivate you beyond the super black look and feel. The Tourbillon Chinese Zodiac The Year Of Dragon watch has a nice square case with circular corners and is made from agate, while its minimalist dial design uplifts its luxury and sophistication statement.

The dark color scheme of the dial carries on to the three-dimensional, rounded crown and its accompanying leather strap, which is made from Nile crocodile leather and mimics the texture of dragon scales for that detailed design. The dark black theme for the watch is essentially chosen so as to maintain the focus on the hands and the golden dragon tourbillon, even though the Ciga Design logo stands out prominently on the watch.

Undoubtedly then the dial is the most fascinating aspect. It comprises black-themed hands that strike distinct allure with seven natural diamonds on them. The hour hand has three diamonds, the minute hand has four. When they align, the two hands create a glowing beam of light that sparks inspiration, Ciga notes. When the eyes are overwhelmed by the diamond sheen, spare a thought for the custom-built golden dragon-shaped tourbillon bridge, just below, which enhances the watch’s artistic expression manifold.

The mechanical tourbillon movement is a caliber CD-06 that gives the watch a documented 40-hour power reserve. The Ciga Design Tourbillon Chinese Zodiac The Year Of Dragon Limited Edition watch is water resistant to 30 meters. It has a silver caseback featuring calligraphic engraving of the Chinese Huai Su sign and adding to the contrast in design of the dark-themed casing. The Blue Planet, as its name rightfully suggests, comes studded with a beautiful blue gem at its center in the form of a detailed, rotating planet that tells time. The rotating hemisphere boasts of a significant amount of detail, with accurate oceans and landmasses, and even relief work in the form of mountains and valleys micro-carved onto the globe. The globe rotates on a central axis, surrounded by two rings with minutes and hours carved into them. While the outermost hour ring remains static, the minute ring in between rotates too, and a compass on the globe helps point out the time.

It’s easy to selectively admire just the detailed planet while glossing over the rest of the timepiece, although the Blue Planet wristwatch is incredibly impressive beyond (and behind) the planet too. For starters, the entire watch comes encased in a seamless, rounded titanium alloy case, with not as much as even a screw in sight to corrupt the watch’s artistic integrity. On top of the dial sits a phenomenal double-domed anti-scratch sapphire crystal that lets you gaze right into the planet underneath, while also giving the watch water-resistance up to 3 ATM underwater. The watch is finally capped off with blue fluororubber straps that are hypoallergenic, durable, and pair pretty wonderfully with the watch’s otherwise minimalist design. The straps rather perfectly blend into the background so the watch’s most impressive detail can shine through.

The Blue Planet’s underlying engineering is pretty impressive too. Relying on an ‘Asynchronous Follow-Up’ movement, the watch features a planet and dial that rotate clockwise at different speeds, ensuring they line up to tell the time perfectly. “After almost a hundred times of tests and research, we successfully changed the gear ratio of the movement to realize that the hour hand rotates 30° when the minute hand rotates 390°”, said the CIGA Design team. “In this way, the hour and minute hands rotate synchronously, which is a transformation of the traditional movement design.”

The Blue Planet is a winner of the extremely coveted Grand Prix d’Horlogerie de Genève (GPHD) award, and as yet another hat-tip to Earth and its cosmic choreography, is limited to just 365 production units.

Gorgeous Skeleton Watch comes with a captivating rugged cyberpunk design

It isn’t often that the words skeleton and rugged go together. A skeleton is, by definition, lean… but CIGA Design’s Gorilla X Series watch really shows how those two conflicting descriptors can coexist. The Gorilla X Series wristwatch is a beautiful, eye-catching timepiece with an incredibly expressive skeleton design. Its skeletal body allows you to practically see through the watch, glimpsing at your wrist underneath. The watch’s bare-basics design lets you also observe all its internal components in vivid detail. Sapphire crystal covers on either side of the watch protect the precious movement between them, and the watch’s rugged 316L frame provides just the right balance between rawness and futuristic punk-ness!

The inspiration for the Gorilla X Series comes from the gentle giant of our primate family. Mimicking the strength and wisdom of the gorilla, the X Series watch echoes similar attributes with a large frame that attracts your attention, but a complex, beautiful interior that reflects the layered personality and intellect of the rather clever ape.

The watch’s internal movement is connected to the rest of the timepiece using a four-point suspension system, visible in the X-shaped design on the front. This offers an arrangement that looks rather precarious but is, in fact, shockproof and resilient. The watch runs on CIGA’s own independently designed CD-01 movement that’s visible in all its minimalist, mechanical glory through the top and bottom of the watch’s frame.

The X Series comes with a 3ATM waterproof design, and both the watch’s X-shaped suspension frame and hands are SuperLuminova-coated, allowing you to read the time even in the dark. In its pursuit of minimalism, the watch doesn’t sport any numbers or even markings on the face. Instead, its rugged outer frame serves as an indication of the 12 markings found on clocks.

The CIGA Design Gorilla X Series watch comes in 5 color variants, including two made from a titanium alloy frame instead of standard 316L Stainless Steel. You’ve also got interchangeable straps to match your sense of style, choosing between nylon and hypoallergenic silicon. The watches start at $359, going up to $519 for the titanium version.

I don’t normally profess a love for complications… unless they are watch complications. There’s a distinct joy in observing mechanical watches and their intricacies, and how multiple pieces of metal choreograph a precisely timed dance to let you literally see time unfold in front of your eyes.

CIGA Design’s Z-Series timepieces feature a handcrafted watch body that encases and showcases.
