Philips launches Cloud TV to stream 'hundreds' of internet channels to its Smart TVs

Philips has just launched Cloud TV at IFA 2013, a service that'll work on its latest Smart TVs including the hot-off-the-press Philips 9000 4K series. It'll bring streaming of "hundreds of local, national, international and special interest channels" to 2012 or newer Philips Smart TV models. An app will also be available for those sets to scan all that content, most of which will be free. The company also announced Cloud Explorer, which will let you store your personal photos, video and audio by signing in to Dropbox or creating a new account through Philips. Both are now available in most of Europe and Russia, so if you're pining for yet another cloud streaming or storage service, check the PR after the break.

Toshiba isn't the first name you'd associate with exciting products, but recently we were invited to check out its 2013 selection of AV gear in the hope we'd be dazzled by pixel counts and the IQ of its revamped smart TV platform. We revisited a few products we had flings with at CES, were introduced to some new panels, and taken through the ins-and-outs of the company's fresh Cloud TV interface. ActiveVideo announces Cloud TV developer program, hopes to woo web developers to television

Have a knack for drumming up gorgeous code in HTML5? ActiveVideo wants to help you put your talents to work on the big screen. The company is launching a new Cloud TV access program designed to help developers acclimate to ActiveVideo's development tools. The company says it's a two stage program, kicking off by introducing developers to the company's APIs, Javascript libraries and services, and panning out to offer priority access to tools, premium development kits and exclusive opportunities to showcase completed apps at trade shows and public events. ActiveVideo even promises to help newbies get started, offering assistance in creating their first Cloud TV applications. The company seems to be using CES as a avenue to coax more developers to the open platform, and will be demoing Cloud TV H5 and its new Access program as a part of CES 2013's Developer University. Microsoft posts job listing for Cloud TV engineers, promises ‘ambitious new project’

Companies might want to keep covert projects top-secret, but the more mundane aspects of business life often seem to get in the way. Take this Microsoft job listing, for example, which reveals that the company is recruiting engineers to work on a new Cloud TV platform. The Mountain View-based team will work under Redmond's Mediaroom business, which already powers IPTV services like AT&T's U-Verse. Personally, we're hoping it's the genesis of a Steve Ballmer-fronted reality show.
