This vertical coat rack by IKEA is the ultimate solution for your space constraint woes

One problem that never seems to leave us, especially f you’re living in a major city – is the lack of space. If you’re an independent millennial who recently moved out of their family home and into their own, then a major issue that you may be dealing with almost every day…is space constraint in your own home. Our modern millennial homes have many virtues, but one thing they lack is space. Space constraint is something most of us end up dealing with every day. Smart storage solutions can be lifesavers in such tricky and compact situations. And one such smart storage solution I’ve come across is the PLOGA rack by IKEA.

Designer: IKEA

Functioning as a coat rack, the PLOGA rack is a great option for your entryway, if you’re facing the woe of space constraints. What makes the wall-mounted coat rack quite intriguing is the fact that it features vertical hooks! The hooks are adjustable and placed vertically on the rack. You can slide them from left to right, creating a flexible form that can be changed whenever. This provides more space to store your items, ensuring that they aren’t layered on top of one another.

The modular rack can be placed in any room of your home – the entryway, bedroom, or even your closet. It’s a simple and minimal piece of furniture that can be used to store a variety of items, from your coats to scarves, ties, purses and etc. Its versatility and modularity make it an excellent addition to your living space.

Some people may find the PLOGA’s vertical design a bit limiting, and the fact that it is wall-mounted, but with the right planning, and the perfect position to hang it on – it could turn out to be really handy. IKEA maintains its usual Scandinavian-inspired aesthetics and classic appearance in the PLOGA design, allowing it to harmoniously merge with the interiors of your home.

This multifunctional coatrack made from wood and metal finds flexibility through a minimalist design

Acrobat is a multifunctional storage piece that combines the safekeeping components of an entryway table with the hanging function of a coatrack.

As we continue to downsize our living spaces, the more multifunctional our furniture is, the better. Smaller spaces don’t necessarily have to mean less living space. Multifunctional furniture helps make more room for living while taking care of a lot of our household tasks. We usually have our own system of arranging EDC items like key rings, wallets, and phones.

Entryway tables and coat racks usually take the brunt of those organizational needs, so finding multifunctionality in their design is key to keeping our homes decluttered. Acrobat, a multifunctional coat rack designed by João Teixeira, combines the storage components of an entryway table with those of a coatrack.

Designer: João Teixeira

Designing Acrobat, Teixeira hoped to find flexibility through the principles of minimalism. The team behind Acrobat hoped to achieve a unique, sophisticated design while keeping the structure very basic and uncomplicated. The team struck the perfect chord behind functionality and simplicity through a tripod-based support structure.

“Adopting a tripod solution,” Teixeira explains, “was key to keeping things stylish, dynamic, and sleek. The bent metal tube adds a sense of continuity by welding only on one side, allowing for this gap to be used as a spot to hang scarfs or other [items]. The metal tube tops can also be used to hang clothes or hats without the need for a hanger.”

The three metal beams function primarily as a spot to keep your hangable items like hats and scarves, while the wooden hull that interlinks the beams offers a safe space to store EDC items like wallets, phones, and keyrings. The central cavity that runs through the wooden hull also provides a secure fastening place to link clothes hangers.

This multifunctional coffee table transforms into a sitting bench and more furniture to save you space!

Saving space in tiny homes should be considered a sport. Finding the right furniture and storage organizers can take a while, but the wait is always worth it once the right pieces come along. One way to save space is by choosing multifunctional furniture like the & Chair from Taiwan-based designer Shin Chen, a piece of furniture that blends storage into a coffee table that doubles as a high stool and bench.

Inspired by the shape of the ampersand, & Chair flows into a natural shape, handmade from a collection of sustainable materials like felt and ash wood. & Chair can be positioned in different placements to change its use‒from upright to horizontal, the & Chair changes function as it changes position. When placed upright, the & Chair morphs into a standing coat rack with ample drawer storage, where smaller items like magazines and umbrellas can be stored. Then, users can bring the & Chair down, allowing it to work as a coffee table with storage space made available through a slot-and-rack system, where magazines and coffee table books can be kept. The & Chair can also always work as a bench when placed horizontally, making for an inviting entryway sitting bench where you can tie your shoes or a more discreet seating area for overflow in the living room.

Modeled after the ampersand, the & Chair’s name is symbolic for its multifunctionality, bringing out its chameleonic personality. Designed from warm, natural wood, the & Chair enhances each living space with a hint of abstract Scandinavian design marked by its wooden structure and unique shape that changes with each of its different uses.

The & Chair functions as a coffee table, storage organizer, and sitting bench, making it an ideal piece of multifunctional furniture for small living spaces.

Using a slot-and-rack storage method, magazines and coffee table books can be stored in the & Chair when its placed horizontally on the floor.

When positioned upright, the & Chair can work as standing coat rack.

Moving from upright to horizontal, the position of the & Chair defines its use.

The & Chair is hand constructed from sustainable building material is felt and ash wood.

The IKEA-worthy multifunctional hourglass lamp is an inspiration for the furniture design industry

One of the greatest perks of my job is researching + understanding the trends that define the Industrial Design world in subtle yet significant ways. If we go by the latest IKEA x SONOS collaboration, the trend in furniture design is to create furniture design that goes beyond being only a piece of furniture, but instead be a well-crafted solution. The difference in both is whether you look at the set of 4 legs and one plank and see it as a table alone or a table that transforms into a chaise lounge when you want to take a nap! This transformative property makes the Hourglass Multifunctional Shelf a worthy winner of the A’ Design Award!

The hourglass shelf takes inspiration from the passage of time, and the functionality of the shelf changes throughout the day. Starting as a coat rack in the early mornings that holds your outdoor wear, the product’s main functionality becomes that of a shelf – to keep your knick-knacks in place. Finally, as the sun goes down, the design works as a detachable lamp, giving light and completing its cycle across the day. “The hourglass is the symbol of time, and the charm of time affects the tide-ups and downs, years change. The change of different roles reminds people to follow the direction of time, perceive the years and harvest exquisite life.” The detachable element of the lamp brings sheer joy to me! As a person surrounded by screens throughout the day, the lamp’s shape and portability make it almost meditative, a chance to literally disconnect and take some time off.

“One plus one is more than two” is the guiding principle behind every thought put into this design. Sure, it provides us with multiple functionalities, but it also creates an emotional connection with the interacting user by sparking joy. With the world leaning towards sustainability, the disposable approach of designing products is now passe. Given the direction mass-manufacturing giants like IKEA are taking (see their latest disassembly guide), the Hourglass Multifunctional Shelf is the perfect furniture design to join the IKEA must-buys. Certainly, given the multitude of usability this shelf provides, it passes the Marie Kondo test of sparking joy, making it a must-have in every home!

The Hourglass Multifunctional Shelf is the winner of the Silver A’ Design Award.

This coatrack turned shelf brings a modern, quirky spin to your entryway storage!

Every entryway should have some form of storage bin where you can throw your keys, your jacket, and all the stuff in your pockets collected during the day. It comes in handy when you’re running late and don’t have the time to spend looking for where you last tossed your keys. Student designers Calvin and Bence recently created their own interpretation of entryway storage with Bügal, a piece of fusion furniture that’s one half coat rack and one half shelf system.

When conceptualizing Bügal, the student designers relied on 3D printing to establish a mold for the unit’s body before grinding, smoothing, and painting it over to achieve its finished, semi-matte, silicone-style look. The hybrid unit of furniture hangs from a wooden peg in a similar fashion to the traditional clothes hanger, but it ditches the hook grip for a more secure peg and socket. Calvin and Bence designed Bügal for the sake of combining the dual functions from a coat rack and a shelving unit, to provide a unique storage system that could fit into any entryway, office space, or bedroom.

Thanks to its familiar shape and uncomplicated design, Bügal looks at home in any space. The combination of a wider frame with a sturdier gripping method allows Bügal to hang more than one piece of clothing and to store even bulkier portable items like film cameras and potted plants. Bügal’s shape is akin to that of a regular clothes hanger, but its deep pocket creates space for everyday carry items like keys, wallets, and smartphones. By merging the practical function of a coat rack with all the storage space provided by a drawer or shelf, Bügal can store a lot of your things and also help cut down the time spent turning your living room inside out to find your keys.

Designers: Calvin Middel & Bencekommt

With a deep shelf and wide-body, Bügal can hang heavier coats and store even your bulkier items.

Thanks to its shelving feature, Bügal can function as a display unit for things like potted plants and art decor.

Bügal’s initial prototype was formed from styrofoam and then given a mold through 3D printing.

Through post-processing work, Bügal was sanded, carved, and painted over to give it a glossy, yet matte look.

With a wooden frame, Bügal is both durable and handy.

Bügal ditches the tradition hook grip used by most clothes hangers for a more secure peg and socket hanging method.

This sanitizing coat rack is a pandemic-era design that will be a part of the restaurant’s new normal

Whether it be to the grocery store or the library, when I leave the house nowadays, you won’t catch me without my hand sanitizer. No matter how little room I have in my pockets, I won’t leave the house without it. However, most stores are installing hand sanitizing stations in their storefronts in order to encourage sanitary browsing. Typically these stations come in the form of an old, previously discarded working desk with a handwritten note taped on the front that reads a friendly, health code reminder to use the available hand sanitizer before entering the store’s sales floor.

Retail establishments were quick to install their own hand sanitizing stations to their storefronts, but for some, the makeshift health posts end up looking less than sanitary and more like worn-down gatekeepers whose only purpose is to enforce clean shopping. Mexico City-based NOS Design understood how design plays a major role in making this essential health precaution feel a little more inviting, so they teamed up with Trusty Tower to design a sanitizing coat rack that fuses functionality with necessity and looks more familiar and less like an unfortunate sign of the times. Their sanitizing coat rack based on a conventional, average-sized metal tube that’s bent at its top so that bottles of hand sanitizers can be placed at an angle. Just below the metal tube’s bend, a short rod insert holds the hand sanitizer in place, allowing the bottle to be pumped at an angle by pressing the coat rack’s top lid.

Additionally, NOS Design attached four hooks for different items like outerwear, purses, or some trendy mask cases. I know when I enter the stores that require hand sanitizing before browsing, it usually takes a minute for me to set all that I’m carrying down before I can sanitize, and even afterward, gathering all my belongings takes more time than necessary. NOS Design cuts that time in half by assembling a means to sanitize and providing an easy hanging spot for all of your belongings at the same time. Hopefully, since responsible shopping in the age of COVID-19 is so important, with designs like this one, sanitizing your hands won’t feel like such a hassle before you can resume regular (pre-Corona) programming (shopping).

The Pieces on This Chess Set Coat Rack are Immovable

Whoa, nice rack! If you are a big-time chess fan, hang up your coat on this cool wooden chess board coat rack. It’s a big checkmate in the home decor wars. It was created by Etsy seller CreativeHolz.

These pieces look pretty cool and are made with care. Each individual chess piece is individually screwed into the board for maximum strength. It makes a great gift for chess fans who need a new place to hang their coats, hats and other things.  It comes in different kinds of wood and player positions. The ones shown are the ‘Caro-Kann defense’ and ‘Italian Opening.’ I have no idea what those mean since I’m at a checkers level, but I assume it’s impressive so consider me impressed.

The shelf on top makes it even more useful. Use it for things like sunglasses and keys. I just wish it had one of those chess timers so that when you hang your coat you can slap it, then when you put your coat back on, you can slap it again. Don’t buy a plain old coat rack like a pawn. Buy one worthy of a king. It’ll set you back between $140 – $160 over on Etsy.

Rethinking the Coat Rack

brush_hanger_layout

It might seem a bit silly at first glance, but once you’re aware of its functionality, the Brush coat rack makes perfect, simple sense. Crafted from raw wood and boar’s hair, the design works much in the same way as a traditional coat rack or clothes hanger you’d see in any entryway. What sets it apart, however, is the removable “branches” with a brush features that can be used to clean and dust clothes. They’ll gently remove water, snow, leaves, and other debris so you’re favorite jackets and coats dry faster and are ready to wear.

Furniture for Fashionistas

swing_coat_stand_layout

For many people, fashion isn’t just the clothes they put on their back. It’s art they wear to express themselves. Designed with all those fashionistas in mind, the Swing coat rack is one worthy of hanging and displaying your wearable works of art.

Its neat, elegant aesthetic is the result of CNC cutting, handcrafting, and seamless joinery. The sculptural piece is right at home in any dressing room, closet or even an entryway. A dapper departure from the utilitarian look of metal coat racks, it’s also ideal for expanding the limited closet space of compact living quarters in a stylish way.
