Capsule coffee machine concept adds a sense of warmth to your daily brew

For some reason, it seems that the market has decided that coffee makers need to have an imposing industrial motif and are covered mostly in black with a few silver accents. Capsule-based coffee machines, however, are challenging that tradition, with many incorporating more curves and colors. Some still adhere to the common coffee machine aesthetic, perhaps to reinforce the image of being a “regular” member of that family. Fortunately, the mechanics of capsule machines leave some room for experimenting with different designs, such as this concept that, as its name seems to imply, exudes a feeling of warmth and comfort that is perfect for your morning cup of coffee.

Designer: Ibrahim Can Erdinçmer

Everything about the Woolly capsule coffee machine concept is meant to exude a sense of softness and approachability, unlike the sometimes daunting personalities of typical coffee machines. The design language makes use of very few straight lines and employs a more muted color palette that goes avoids blacks and reds. The wooden panel and metallic accents contrast nicely with the textured plastic surface of the body, creating a composition that’s pleasing to the eyes from every angle.

Woolly also has a tactile aspect to it, inviting people to feel its warmth instead of just seeing it. The wooden panel and texture plastic already provide a stimulating touch experience, but the embedded touch-sensitive buttons on the panel take that interaction to the next level. The icons for this interface are backlit, but they fade and disappear into the background when not needed in order to minimize visual distractions.

1

In terms of functionality, the concept also offers a few unique features. It has, for example, a large bin that can hold up to ten empty capsules, letting you delay cleanup for a while. The bowl-shaped spill tray almost looks like a separate part, and it is actually only attached magnetically to the body. It could probably be used on its own as a tray for a cup or mug, allowing you to bring that aesthetic with you wherever you will drink your coffee.

Woolly bucks the trend of coffee machines to offer a comforting experience that goes beyond just serving coffee. While the usability of embedded touch buttons might raise a few concerns, the concept still offers something worthwhile as a whole. Even better, such a design is completely within the realm of possibility, presuming there are coffee machine manufacturers willing to take the plunge in designing something different yet appealing for this market.

LAYER Breeze coffee machine presents a softer way to start your day

Kitchen appliances have gotten more sophisticated and more advanced these days, yet their design language has remained mostly the same. Although they definitely look elegant and refined, most kitchen equipment, from refrigerators to ovens, often have sharp edges, shiny metallic surfaces, and an almost cold demeanor. There are exceptions, of course, but this design DNA seems to be the most prevalent, even for smaller appliances like toasters and coffee machines. That, in turn, dictates the overall aesthetic of the kitchen, at least if the appliances’ style doesn’t clash with the theme you already have going. That doesn’t always have to be the case, and this capsule-based coffee machine challenges those established traditions to bring a device that greets you with a calming and somber ambiance that helps ease you into the day.

Designer: Benjamin Hubert (LAYER Design)

A lot of people depend on coffee to get their day started or even get through the rest of the day. While businesses like Starbucks can be found almost everywhere, many households today would have their own coffee machine, whether using beans or capsules. Despite the popularity of these appliances, few owners probably notice how their designs affect how people see and approach them, which is to say they see coffee machines are veritable machines that are elegant yet clinical rather than something approachable and personal.

Breeze, designed for the South Korean coffee brand Dongsuh, tries to change that attitude by drastically changing the appearance of a capsule coffee machine. This comparatively newer breed of coffee makers often have more stylish and less industrial designs, but they still can’t get rid of that shiny metallic luster common to kitchen appliances and tools. In contrast, Breeze applies a refreshing and softer color palette, favoring pastel variants of white, charcoal, and pink to convey a gentler personality.

The shapes are also distinctly different. While the modular blocks are admittedly more geometric, their rounded corners add to the overall softer aesthetic of the machine. A ridged surface wraps around the base, contrasting with the smoother texture of the head. Another point of contrast is the tall water tank at the back, a transparent container that projects an image of clarity that, when taken together with the more subdued hues of the machine, seems to send a message of calm.

Beyond just the visuals, the design also includes a more tactile interface to operate the machine, using clearly marked LED-backlit buttons at the top of the head. Made from simple shapes and with a simple way of operating, Breeze gives the coffee machine a gentle and almost comforting identity, which is probably the kind of character you’d want to meet when you get your coffee first thing in the morning or in the middle of a tiring day.

Origin coffee machine concept pays tribute to Ethiopia

Whenever I take my first sip of coffee in the morning, I am always thankful to whoever it was that first developed coffee and the farmers who harvested this particular blend I’m drinking. While some of the world’s best coffee is generally known to come from Brazil, Colombia, and Vietnam (my country, the Philippines, will hopefully someday be included in that list), one of the unsung heroes of the industry is Ethiopia where coffee beans have been thriving since the 7th century. This concept design for a coffee maker pays tribute to the East African country.

Designer: Cheese C

The Origin coffee maker concept wants to bring “meaningful coffee” to your cup by reminding you of its origins. The shape of the coffee maker is inspired by the map of Ethiopia, although of course it’s not in the exact shape but is modeled after the basic outline. This way, the designer is able to “honor” the origin of coffee, although historians can’t really say that the locals who grew the beans cultivated or consumed these precious beans there.

But in any case, the Origin name is pretty apt. The shape is part cylindrical and part rectangular but with a slight protruding top, particularly where the “pressured” coffee comes out. At first glance, it reminds me of a traditional moka pot but without the spout and the handle. It is made from metal and the color is achromatic, giving it an industrial feel that can match other kitchen appliances if that’s your theme. The finishing is not smooth though as it intentionally makes it look like it has corrosions and scratches.

The product design makes it seem easy to use as there are just a few buttons you need to press including the on/off and open/close buttons. You have the option to make an espresso or an americano and there’s also a button or level for the water and the beans. Being a coffee addict, this is something I may actually consider especially as it was designed meaningfully. But of course, a coffee maker or machine is only as good as its beans and the water you use.

Sleek coffee makers to help you prepare the perfect cup of coffee every time

I love coffee, I need it to start my day, or else I simply refuse to start my day! It’s the boost of energy, dose of motivation, and rush of serotonin that I need every morning. And, I’m pretty sure that’s the case for most of us. However, with the pandemic caging us to our homes, we’ve been unable to grab some coffee from our preferred baristas and coffee shops! Hence, learning to brew my own coffee is something I’ve had to learn, and it’s really not so bad. There is a different satisfaction and pleasure in sipping caffeine that you know is the result of your own hard work, something precariously prepared with your own personal touch to it. A unique, innovative, and interactive coffee machine is all you need, and ninety-five percent of the battle is won (the other five percent is you setting aside your laziness and actually operating the machine)! From a sleek coffee grinder and brewer designed to replace your Keurig to a Jenga-inspired modular coffee maker – this collection of super cool and easy-to-use coffee machines will start you off on your coffee brewing journey. Cheers!

1. The Gevi

A 2021 winner of the Red Dot Design Award, the Gevi rubbishes the notion that a coffee machine needs to look like a large, bulky, boxy appliance. The 2-in-1 coffee grinder and brewer are visually separated into their two parts. The appliance comes with a base platform that has its own dedicated weighing scale to help you weigh the beans before you add them to the grinder. The grinder comes with a bean hopper on the top to feed the beans in, while commercial-level 60mm flat steel burrs help create a consistent grind of your beans (while anti-static measures help prevent particles from sticking/clumping). The dose consistency from beans to powder of the appliance is around 0.2g.

2. X&Y

Introducing their take on the brewing system, Kurz Kurz Design unveiled their X & Y pour-over set, featuring a stainless steel gooseneck kettle and brewer coated in charcoal black and cobalt blue. X&Y comes in both charcoal black and cobalt blue. Developed in stainless steel, the gooseneck kettle and filter stand come complete with added thermal insulation from a banded construction. On top of that, a strip of cobalt blue-dyed leather comes with the package specifically designed to wrap around the gooseneck kettle’s handle, doubly ensuring a safe pour.

3. The Brewster DCM5000

Designed especially for those of us who work from home, the Brewster DCM5000 is compact and highly technical to limit the mess of making coffee and make it easier to use. The team of India-based designers conceptualized the Brewster DCM5000 as a coffee maker that could be placed on a desk without taking up too much space. Downsized to fit in any workspace, the Brewster DCM5000’s bulkiest part is the 250ml water tank.

4. The Oblic Dropper

Reinterpreting the classic coffee dripper through a portable, compact lens, industrial designer JenFu Yang conceptualized the Oblic Dropper, a handheld pour-over device ideal for bringing coffee with you on the go. Following a similar build to conventional immersion coffee drippers, the Oblic Dropper allows users to brew pour-over sin record time across multiple coffee mugs. Equipped with an integrated stopper, transferring Oblic Dropper from one cup to the next can be a clean, seamless transition without any spillage.

5. The Rapha + Rocket R58 Espresso Machine

The Rapha + Rocket R58 Espresso Machine features two PID-controlled boilers that ensure optimal extraction of any type of coffee. It boasts a touchscreen display with a variety of functions to help you prepare the perfect cup of coffee! A twin stainless steel portafilter and a wooden handle seal the deal on this intriguing coffee maker. A no-burn steam and water wand prevent you from burning yourself.

6. The Qterra Craft

As portable as an ordinary Starbucks travel mug, the Qterra Craft is designed to give you coffee so fresh you’ll feel like it was brewed right inside it… and you’d be right! The Qterra Craft is a pretty clever little device, giving you the freshest coffee or tea—even while you’re traveling—by simply brewing it on the spot. The mug comes with a lid that holds tea leaves or coffee grounds in a telescopic Q-Brew Basket that extends downwards into the vessel when the lid is twisted. Fill the vessel with piping hot water and twist the lid just minutes before you actually want your beverage. Then twist the lid when you’re done and the used leaves or grounds ascend back into the lid, secured with an air-tight seal.

7. Cenga

Inspired by the build of Jenga towers, Cenga is a modular, handmade coffee set with a grinder, dripper, and canister included in a single unit. Piled together like a Jenga tower, Cenga is a handmade modular coffee set conceptualized by a team of designers to bring home everything you’d find in a cafe. Starting from the top of Cenga, a grinder for coffee beans funnels the grounds into a dripper before heating up some water and dripping that into a canister to serve.

8. Cosie

Cosie is a siphon coffee maker designed to bring the emotional experience of watching your coffee brew at a cafe into the comfort of your own kitchen. Since Cosie is a siphon machine, the coffee inside the canisters is extracted through steam pressure generated by boiling water, a process that users can watch while brewing their own coffee. The integrated siphon also makes the general upkeep and management of Cosie much easier to keep up with. After spooning in their desired amount of coffee grinds into the machine’s top compartment, users need only fill the main cartridge with water and turn its handle clockwise to kickstart the brewing process.

9. Niche Zero

Designed by UK-based brand Niche Coffee, Niche Zero is a specially designed single-dose grinder that refreshes you with not just a cup of coffee, but also with its eye-catching design. The grinder, which comes in either white or black, features a gently curved metal body, retro-style switches, and wooden accents and stubby legs that make it look warm and approachable.

10. Minimal

Drip Coffee Maker Red Dot Design Award

Encased in a vinyl travel case, Minimal is made up of a glass dripper and cup, and a filter stand stocked with reusable cloth filters. Both the glass dripper and cup are made from borosilicate glass to ensure the same quality heat resistance found in glassware like Pyrex and lab flasks. Minimal also comes with a wooden lid that doubles as a coaster so when you’re camping, you’ll always have a place to set your cup.

A sleek, automatic pour-over coffee machine designed to fit right on your desk as you WFH

The Brewster DCM5000 is a single-cup, automatic pour-over machine designed for those who WFH to have a compact, easy-to-use coffee machine.

Access to a cup of quality coffee is essential if you work from home. Nothing can beat our go-to coffee order from our favorite barista, but we can try and get close to it in our kitchen. Whether you’ve got the taste for an espresso, latte, or just a cup of joe, having the right coffee brewer makes or breaks the morning. For those who tend towards pour-overs first thing, a team of designers, Abishek Sen, Tanvi Supe, and Vanshika Singhi, conceptualized the Brewster DCM5000, an automatic, one-cup pour-over machine.

Designers: Abishek Sen, Tanvi Supe, and Vanshika Singhi

Designed especially for those of us who work from home, the Brewster DCM5000 is compact and highly technical to limit the mess of making coffee and make it easier to use. The team of India-based designers conceptualized the Brewster DCM5000 as a coffee maker that could be placed on a desk without taking up too much space.

Downsized to fit in any workspace, the Brewster DCM5000’s bulkiest part is the 250ml water tank. Even so, the Brewster DCM5000 features a rear cavity that holds the water tank in place, cutting its width in half. In addition to its compact size, the designers wanted to ensure that users could select the number of cups they’d like brewed, the strength of their coffee, and enjoy an automatic circular pour-over mechanism.

To brew a pour-over cup of coffee, users can pull out Brewster DCM5000’s water reservoir and fill it with fresh water, place their mug beneath the filter and filter cone before selecting the brewing process. Then, the freshwater is pumped towards a tubular heating element that heats up the water to pour over the coffee grinds. The automatic circular pour-over mechanism then works to evenly distribute hot water over the filter cone to make a single cup of steaming hot coffee.

Following periods of ideating and CAD modeling, the team of designers finalized the Brewster DCM5000’s look and technical design.

The Brewster DCM5000’s packaging is eco-friendly by design.

Tiny coffee makers that brew Starbucks-worthy coffee + perfectly fit into your modern kitchen!

If you’re anything like me, then you absolutely cannot start your day without a freshly brewed cup of coffee! It’s the boost of energy, dose of motivation, and rush of serotonin that I need every morning. And, I’m pretty sure that’s the case for most of us. However, to create the perfect cup of coffee, you need the perfect coffee maker! I don’t know about you, but I utterly detest dealing with those conventional and bulky coffee makers. Coffee makers should be simple, easy-to-use, making coffee accesible to almost everyone! And we’ve curated a collection of tiny and compact, yet super functional coffee maker designs that will not only fit perfectly into your modern kitchen but brew some Starbucks-worthy coffee for you!

COFFEEJACK comes from the folks at Hribarcain, famed for their great work in the EDC department. Now, they’ve set out to shrink the coffee machine to a form factor so small, you might as well carry it around everywhere you go along with the rest of your belongings. The COFFEEJACK works with any coffee-grind, enabling you to have your favorite espresso anywhere you go, while also reducing your dependence on those earth-polluting Nespresso and Keurig pods. Just add your coffee grind to the lower chamber and COFFEEJACK’s in-built tamper will level the grounds and pack them tightly. Open out the pump and pour hot water into the upper chamber and you’re ready to go! The espresso maker’s manual pump matches the high-pressure output of most coffee machines, giving you an espresso that is deliciously thick and even has that layer of flavor-packed crema on top, just like the one your barista makes with professional equipment.

The ATONCE coffee maker is a thermos-sized device that comes with its own kettle, bean-grinder, pour-over filter, and coffee mug. Compact enough so you can carry it around with you in your bag, backpack, or even in a baggy pocket, ATONCE helps you brew barista-grade coffee with your favorite beans wherever you are, in under 5 minutes. Its multi-part design has a kettle for pouring water, an adjustable ceramic-burr motorized bean-grinder, a double-mesh stainless steel filter, a vacuum-insulated coffee cup, and a sipper-lid, packaging every coffee-making appliance in a nifty, compact form. To ensure coffee consistency, ATONCE comes with a 15g scoop that picks up just the right amount of beans for a single cup, and a 230ml marking on the kettle, allowing you to measure just the right amount of water for brewing the ‘golden cup’ according to the SCA or the Specialty Coffee Association.

Wacaco Picopresso Portable Espresso Coffee Maker

Wacaco Picopresso Portable Espresso Coffee Maker

The Picopresso (highlighting its use of metric nomenclature) pulls out all stops. It isn’t just thermos-sized, it’s cup-sized. Designed to be small enough to carry in your pocket, the Picopresso lets you brew that perfect shot of espresso coffee no matter where you are. The Picopresso stands at 10.5cm tall, or a little above 4 inches, making it perhaps the smallest ever coffee machine to be able to pressure-brew an espresso. That means even at 10.5cm tall, the Picopresso makes a luxuriously silky double shot of cafe-quality espresso, complete with that layer of crema on top that you’d see from any good espresso machine.

At first glance, the Osma looks like a thermos. In actuality, the metal shell holds the Osma’s coffee-brewing machinery, and the clear transparent top is the drink container. So, how does it work? The best way to describe the Osma’s brewing mechanism would be to contrast it against a commonly-used method: pour-over. This method, true to its name, involves pouring hot water over coffee grounds. Basically, gravity does the mixing/flavoring for you. The Osma, on the other hand, does not let the water seep down; it pumps air up into the container to mix the hot water and coffee grounds. This process creates a unique flavor profile, one that coffee connoisseurs say can’t even be achieved through pour-over brewing. It’s faster too – especially when it comes to making cold brew, cutting down a 12+ hour seeping process into 60 seconds. Also, the Osma features two small bonuses: biodegradable pods and a companion app that allows users to discover new flavored pods and share brewing tips/recipes.

Designed to make one amazing shot of coffee, the Bripe comes with a food thermometer, a quad-jet torch, a vial to carry your coffee grounds around in, and a copper stand to rest the Bripe on during the brewing process. You start by picking up the Bripe, setting the stainless steel filter in, and pouring your grounds into the receptacle along with water. Then simply insert the thermometer in and heat the concoction using the quad-jet torch till the thermometer reads 185°F. Allow your brew to rest for a period of 1-2 minutes until the temperature drops down to 140°F and then sip your brilliant brew through the pipe provided. Made out of copper, the Bripe does a pretty marvelous job of brewing a single shot of coffee that maker Tim Panek claims to be the best in the world.

Designed for the outdoors, the VSSL JAVA comes in a compact, easy-to-carry form factor, with a carabiner clip built right into its handle. The clip, aside from locking the handle in place (to prevent it from accidentally grinding), even helps secure the VSSL JAVA to your backpack/tent by suspending it from a handle or loop. The handle even comes with a telescopic extension to reduce effort, and allows you to grind enough coffee for 2 people in a matter of 60 seconds… because the only thing that complements a good sunrise and crisp, dewy air is a well-made cup of freshly ground, freshly brewed coffee!

Created by a bunch of people who absolutely loved brewing and consuming cups of coffee, the Pourigami was envisioned as a great way to carry your coffee-brewer with you. Big enough to brew one cup of coffee at a time, small enough to slip into your wallet when you’re done, and light enough to take practically anywhere, Pourigami is made of three uniquely shaped stainless-steel cards that measure just 2.4mm when stacked together. Open them out and dock them within each other and you’ve got yourself a pour-over coffee maker that rests on any cup and can be used with any #2 size coffee filter. The Pourigami’s triangular shape makes it stable, and the stainless steel build is the perfect choice for its reliability food-grade nature, and rustproof-ness.

Congratulations on perfecting your grind! Now it’s brewing time… The Minipresso takes care of that in a profile that’s small enough to slide into your backpack’s bottle holder. The tiny little brewer lets you brew coffee from your own grounds, and there’s even a version that lets you just use Nespresso pods. With a pressure chamber that allows you to build up high pressure, the Minipresso allows you to pump hot water through your grounds, resulting in fresh-brewed creamy, rich coffee that you can either consume in espresso form or turn into a cup of black coffee or a latte by adding to it. The Minipresso is tiny enough to let you brew your coffee anywhere, and even comes with its own cup, so you’ve got literally nothing to worry about. Just sip away!

With GoSun’s portable brewer, you can make an incredible cup of coffee or tea, from start to finish, in an all-in-one cup anywhere, anytime – nothing can stop you! The power comes from a 130W Heater and an integrated French press which have been fused into a doubled insulated mug that will not only brew your drink, but it will keep your drink hot for hours. So if you are like me and avoid camping because you turn into a bear without your caffeine fix, GoSun has got you. So how is this company solving every problem a coffee lover can have? Well, GoSun is a pioneer in the fuel-free industry and it is utilizing the best of clean tech to help you use more sun…to brew more coffee. “We love being outdoors, sharing our experiences, and staying connected, but we hate running out of power and we hate missing our morning coffee – that’s why we created both GoSun Brew and GoSun Power,” says the team who obviously gets good ideas only after their morning fix.

Most of the pour-over coffee makers in the market focus on functionality rather than usability making it hard for beginners to make a perfect cup without knowing the techniques. That is where Eli comes in – it is a transformable, compact, and automatic pour-over coffee maker designed to make the brewing process easier and the taste more consistent. It is a brewing kit that divides the process into three phases – material preparation, brewing setup, and final brewing. Boil water and keep the grounds ready, then slide and lift the structure, followed by rotating it to lock the base – now you are ready to brew. It has a smooth and stable rotating axis structure that elevates its minimal aesthetics.

$15,000 Coffee Maker Shaped Like a Jet Engine

Fly high with this aeronautically theme espresso machine. The Jet Engine Coffee or Tea Machine is an accurate looking 1/4 scale version of a real jet engine. As you would expect from a device this luxuriously priced, it’s hand crafted. But not from ordinary metals. Oh no. This it the high test stuff, like that Civet Coffee that’s made from that Indonesian cat-like animal poop, except instead of beans in animal excrement, it’s metal. Heavy metal. The Judas Priest of coffee makers. We’re talking aviation-grade 6061 aluminum alloy, 316 stainless steel, and 7075 aluminum-bronze alloy. Is your Keurig made from aviation-grade anything? Didn’t think so.

Slide back the jet’s cowling and inside is your espresso machine. You can also brew tea in there. A pair of buttons on the base let’s you choose your serving size as it fills up your diamond encrusted mug or your solid gold travel mug. This coffee maker is a beast- weighing in at over 65 lbs! That’s a lot of aviation-grade aluminum. Would make a great high end gift for anyone into aviation, or perhaps someone with a private jet would like this onboard or at home to keep the jetsetting theme going and caffeinated.

DIY WiFi Controller for a Keurig

diy keurig
Get your morning coffee brewing without getting out of bed! Sure they do make some coffee machines with built-in timers but what if your schedule is irregular? (Insert your own “coffee keeps you regular” joke here). One hero Instructables user made his own WiFi powered controller for his Keurig machine.

There are extensive details at the link above if you’re actually going to build your own but the basic idea is to use an Arduino Yun wired to his coffee machine, then connected via a router to a web page he made. He simply uses his smartphone to go to the page, clicks a link and it tells the Arduino to open the circuit and turn on the coffee maker. By the time he gets to the kitchen, coffee is brewed. Of course he has to pre-load the machine with a K-cup and water each night. It’s a pretty extensive workaround to getting out of bed, but like they say- laziness is the mother of invention.
