Eco-friendly coffee pod brand pairs product with sustainable packaging

As a regular (addicted) coffee drinker, I use different methods to get my caffeine fix. Most of the time I just use a good ole coffee brewer but when I need a sort-of espresso fix, my coffee pod machine is the most convenient way since I don’t have an actual espresso machine. However we know that this isn’t the most environmentally-friendly way to consume coffee. But we’re seeing several brands come up with a more sustainable way forward for the k-cup industry.

Designer: Zenpack for Cambio

Cambio Roasters is one such brand that came up with organic coffee pods that were made up of just two materials: #5 polypropylene plastic and aluminum. But they didn’t want to just stop with the pods but come up with sustainable packaging as well. Zenpack created this container with eco-friendly materials that can serve also as a mini recycling bin for the pods before you bring them to the actual recycling bin.

The container is made from molded pulp with added vertical ribs to give it more structure. It is able to hold 10 pods both for when it is shipped and for when you want to hold your used pods. Even the label is sustainable as it’s a glue-free belly band with a tear strip. All of the elements of this packaging can be thrown into a larger receptacle recycling bin. The container can also be used as a temporary compost bin for your coffee grounds and other kitchen scraps.

With people becoming more conscious with how they consume products, it is good that more sustainable brands are emerging. We stan these brands that not only think of their main products but also their packaging, which can sometimes get lost in the shuffle.

The iconic Bugatti Type 35-inspired luxury coffee maker gives a vintage boost to your morning caffeine!

The Bugatti Type 35 was developed with master engineer and racing driver Jean Chassagne, who then also drove it in the car’s first Grand Prix back in 1924. The races to follow determined the Bugatti Type 35 as the most successful of the Bugatti racing models, earning countless winning titles during its peak years. Inspired by the powerhouse marque, Sajdin Osmancevic designed a luxury coffeemaker in the style of the Bugatti Type 35, with a finished look fit for the post-race winner’s circle.

In order to get the coffee machine going, users simply flip open the golden emblem at the top of the arch-shaped, gridded radiator, to insert their preferred coffee capsule and wait for hot coffee to pour from the Bugatti logo. Moving to the coffee machine’s bulbous backside, reminiscent of the Bugatti Type 35’s spherical and triangular rear wing, users will find the coffee machine’s rear switch dial, a scaled replica of Type 35’s petrol tank where either a single or double shot of espresso can be chosen for brewing. Then along the side of Osmancevic’s coffee machine, steam vents that mimic the Type 35’s side hood are fashionably placed along with unique number decals, echoing back to the model’s heyday.

Operating similarly to that of Nespresso coffee machines, Osmancevic’s Bugatti-inspired coffee machine uses ground coffee-filled capsules to brew coffee. Perhaps, most well-known for its iconic arch-shaped radiator, the Bugatti Type 35 was the founding cornerstone for Bugatti’s current trademark look. By incorporating the radiator grills, along with Bugatti’s shades of steel and powder blue and walnut brown leather accents, Osmancevic created a coffee machine that easily distinguishes itself as a luxe appliance ready for the racetrack. Coffee and Bugatti sport a long and rich history, filled with full-bodied flavor, smooth finishes, and steaming hot appeal– a winning match.

Designer: Sajdin Osmancevic

Through different ideations, Osmancevic conceptualized his coffee maker design to look just like the Bugatti Type 35.

From its gridded radiator to its gleaning Bugatti emblem, Osmancevic’s coffee maker felt inspired by Bugatti’s design language in making of his coffee maker design.

Similar to the function of a Nespresso coffee maker, Osmancevic’s uses capsule pods to brew single or double espresso shots.

Echoing back to Bugatti’s racing prime, Osmancevic was sure to include finer details like the side hood vents and flashy decals.

Coming in steel blue, powder blue, and dark chocolate brown, Osmancevic looked to Bugatti’s famous color scheme to coat his coffee makers in glossy paint.

Made using 3000 Nespresso pods, this installation transforms ocean waste into art

The Superegg Installation is a comment on our capitalist tendencies and its effect on nature. By combining consumerism and creation into one hard-hitting sculpture, the art piece helps turn human-created ocean waste into an object that sparks conversations while saving the environment. The 6’6″ high structure comes made from 3000 Nespresso and Keurig single-use coffee pods that were pulled out of the ocean. These aluminum pods were then mounted onto aluminum sheets which were finally wrapped onto plywood rings to create the shape of an egg.

The Superegg installation looks like a Fabergé egg from afar, with the thousands of colorful pods forming patterns on it, but the magic is doubled at night, when a light within the installation illuminates the structure, causing it to create mesmeric shadows like tinted glass mosaics at churches and cathedrals. The egg acts as proof of how damaging our consumerism can be on the environment, while being a reminder that we can always turn our waste and wasteful behaviors into something more meaningful and nurturing.

The Superegg is a winner of the A’ Design Award for the year 2020.

The Capsulier Lets You Build your Own Artisanal Nespresso Pods!

The Nespresso machine identified a pretty unique problem. Coffee makes you energetic and gets you through the day, but prior to that first cup, you’re lazy, groggy, and pretty unlikely to go and manually brew your coffee. The Nespresso therefore gives you your serving of coffee in a jiffy. Insert a coffee pod into machine, close lid, press button, and presto, great coffee in an instant. However, the Nespresso comes with its disadvantages too. It’s built to work only using Nestlé’s proprietary disposable pods, which are expensive, impossible to customize, and terrible for the environment.

In comes the Capsulier Lite, with its super-hero sounding name, because it quite literally saves the planet and your wallet together. The Capsulier lets you create your own coffee pods, rather than rely on store-bought ones. The machine comes with reusable stainless steel pods that you can simply fill with your own blend of coffee, even throwing spices or aromatics in to craft your personal custom blends. All you have to do is simply pour your crafted brew into the Capsulier’s upper compartment and pull on the lever on the side. The Capsulier fills the stainless steel pod (or the Capsi) with a leveled dose of your brew. The pod can then be used with a Nespresso machine, giving you your instant fix of coffee at the push of a button.

The Capsi can be used with not just coffee but tea too, allowing you to brew specially crafted cups of tea too, and it works out 7 times cheaper than a store-bought Nespresso pod. The pods can be washed and reused infinitely too, so they don’t clog the planet with more waste than necessary. And with the ability to literally play barista by crafting your own unique brews, it’s quite literally a win for everyone!
