This designer gave the cuckoo clock an architectural upgrade

For ages now, the cuckoo has resided in a traditional bungalow made of wood with a gable roof, probably a chimney, and ornamentation around like trees, rocks, or the rare waterfall, but not anymore. Aptly titled the “Cuckoo Block”, Guido Zimmermann gives the bird a space upgrade, with beautifully contemporary brutalist apartment buildings.

With its concrete makeover, these new clocks fit well into urban homes, because they too are urban homes. Taking inspiration from Brutalist and Bauhaus architecture, the Cuckoo Blocks series feature miniature versions of the Glenkerry House and the La Flaine ski resort, aside from Zimmermann’s own creations. Just like the original cuckoo clocks of Black Forest, Germany, these houses too come with stunning levels of detail, from painted details of apartments through the windows, to even satellite dishes near balconies… and yes, there’s obviously a mechanical cuckoo too!

Tick Tock the Cuckoo Clock

cockwoo_clock

I love Cuckoo clocks, they have always fascinated me since I was a child. My dad used to travel to Germany and brought one back when I was small and it was such a fun addition to the home. I’ve always wanted one my self, but the design of the older models just didn’t fit well with my home design style. Until now!

Intenxiv design group has created a modern take on the Cuckoo Clock. Their reason for chaining up the style is that they believe that since birds live in trees, that the clock should reflect that more so than a similar design style of a human house. So they created a tree like burrow for the cuckoo bird to live in on your wall.

The white clock face is on the sliced cylinder face which is angled for easily reading the time with a white hour hand and a blue minute hand. Each hour, the beautiful, blue bird comes out of his little burrow to sing a sweet song each hour – just like the older version of the clock. A great modern twist to an old classic.

The Nightmare Before Christmas Cuckoo Clock: This is Halloween

Fans of The Nightmare Before Christmas will enjoy this cuckoo clock from The Bradford Exchange. It is pretty creepy, and a bit busy, just like any Tim Burton production.

It has Jack Skellington and Sally in front of the Town Hall and Jack’s Tower. It also lights up. The windows of Jack’s Tower, the ghosts and pumpkins all illuminate. However, this is a cuckoo clock is without an actual cuckoo on the hour. Instead, it plays “This is Halloween” while Zero pops in and out of the doors on top. Crazy right?

It even has characters swinging on the weights. There are worse ways to spend $200. Display it all year round, not just at Christmas or Halloween.

You Could Live Inside the World’s Largest Cuckoo Clock

Cuckoo clocks are pretty amazing. I’m always fascinated by the engineering inside of them. They keep pretty good time too. Plus, all authentic cuckoo clocks are made by hand, so each one is unique. It is a fine tradition of craftsmen that are super talented. And now we have the world’s largest cuckoo clock, which is as big as a house.

According to Guinness World Records, this is the biggest cuckoo clock in the world and it is in Triberg, Germany. Of course. It’s a traditional Black Forest cuckoo clock design scaled up 60 times the size of the original. This clock weighs six tons.

The cuckoo bird itself is 4.5 meters long and weighs 150 kilograms. Like the real thing, this clock is made of wood and was carved entirely hand. The cuckoo calls once every quarter hour and then chimes every hour.

Unless you really like Cuckoo clocks, the sound would probably drive you nuts if you heard it all day.
